Czech Republic: Gabriela Gunčíková to Stockholm!

Gabriela Gunčíková Czech 2016Czech Republic – The Czech national broadcaster Ceska Televize (CT) has confirmed that Gabriela Gunčíková will represent the country in Eurovision in 2016.  The song is called ‘I stand‘. The Czechs returned last year after a five year break, but failed to qualify for the final. Gabriela found fame on Czech & Slovak Idol in 2011. She was known for singing rock classics.

  1. Not too impressed by this snippet, and I doubt it will change the Czech fortunes.

It’s a shame they can’t come up with something better. It’s the country of Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček after all.

  2. If anything, she is a strong singer, and it sounds good in snippet form (recaps). The staging potential is good too. I was really hoping for something more rock-ish, like her other songs, instead of a song tailor-made for Eurovision success and nothing else.

  3. So, another… “talent” from a… “talent” show. I’ll wait for the song. From what i hear in the snippet, it sounds ok.

Georgia tops my list with a 9.5/12. This is the second year in row that the song that tops my list doesn’t score higher than 9.5/12. And that pretty much sums up what I think of that last two esc editions :( :( :(

  4. It’s a nice enough ballad with a memorable chorus.I agree with others that if she delivers vocally she will qualify.I hope the Swedish team is a one time thing and won’t become their habit in case they qualify.

  5. Take a look at the 1st semi. With the exception of San marino,Moldova and Montenegro everyone else has a chance to qualify and some songs that should, imo qualify will be left behind. :(

  7. About CZR. An OK. Definitely nothing WOW about it. If she can deliver live CZR will have little trouble advancing. I want this one in because of the flag it represents.

  8. Like comments above would have to hear final version before making a judgement but it sounds a bit like more 40% of songs so far this year as in a bombastic sound of nothingness to my ears, let’s see live version
Quick Spanish update: Barei released official ESC video clip yesterday with final song version (they have made some changes and Spanish ESC fans are divided!), if some buildings look familiar she went to Stockholm to film it! lovely girl though!

  9. my ranking of SF 1

    1st Iceland
    2nd Hungary
    3rd Estonia
    4th Russia
    5th Croatia
    6th Czech Republic
    7th Cyprus
    8th Armenia
    9th Netherlands
    10th Finland
    11th Austria
12th Bosnia & Herzegovina (too dated and ethnic, and does not reflect nor appeal to the international music industry like Latvia, Australia and Hungary would do if released globally and like Greece the rap in the bridge is like a ball charging through a china shop, completely ruins i=the song)

13th Greece (one of the worse Greek entries in the last 5 years, exact same problems as Bosnia & Herzegovina, one big mess and too repetitive, does not deserve to qualify)

14th Moldova (Terrible English and diction)
    15th Montenegro
16th San Marino (a nightmare as expected, for him representing San Marino with this trash is an insult, they should just say San Marino withdrew this year and call it Turkey instead).

    • “…and does not reflect nor appeal to the international music industry…”

…the international music industry?!!! Big, like biiiig lmao. Who gives a shit about “international music industry”?!!! :/

          • What do you think of the changes? apparently it is the final version and fans are divided, anyway she will have 5 female backing singers (4 from previous ESC contests and Brequette) and staging will be arranged by a famous German? (sounding name), gutter Spanish press keep emphasing the fact she is a millionaire heiress (it’s true) and singing about a song of bettering yourself etc ..ay!! aquí estamos querido amigo!

            • well I heard “Satellite” in my local supermarket on a loop during 2010, am talking about Bosnia 2016 song here which am sure I won’t hear

          • they are not very accessible though :/ countries like the Balkans and Portugal need to be dragged into more contemporary and current music you can’t keep regurgitating the same dated and traditional entries all the time because then it gets boring, you have to move with the times not stay stuck in the past. The reason why theres been a move to more English songs is because of this so more people can access it and understand the song… English is an international language known and spoken by most, internationally known artists perform in English and these are the ones that have been successful, thats what Eurovision needs to continue moving towards – contemporary music that is commercial and can appeal outside voting blocks. Greece has done well at this in the past but the past two years they’ve lost the plot and thats evident in their recent results.

          • I will partially disagree. I get it that there is a certain detest for anything that could remotely remind a succesful paneuropean hit in this forum but it’s a very important element for the contest to move on imo.

            • One thing is what you are saying (and maybe you are right), another is desperately following a receipe in order to get a successful result and be likeable to the masses.

Off for a late class now. Back later tonight :)

            • “be likeable to the masses”

Such statements leave a bad taste in my mouth tbh but everyone is responsible for their own words anyway…

Anyway, yeah we will disagree. As my answer to Paul explains we want the contest to go to different directions so it’s natural.

            • I agree above, why bother with a real “song” contest when it becomes a kind of MTV song contest, if I want to hear songs that get awards for the masses I’ll put on MTV/Grammy etc awards , if I want to listen to the essence of ESC am hoping for once a year songs that represent Europe and me as a true European , then I’ll watch ESC

            • And that’s where we will disagree. I consider songs with life expectancy even after that one Saturday night of the eurovision final very real song. Actually much more real than songs that exist only in the esc bubble. Don’t get me wrong – many of those are very good. But I personally want the contest to go to another direction – with more appeal to wider audiences and songs that will have an impact around Europe.

          • That’s true.I have said it a thousand times.Eurovision should not be about chart success and chart success alone. This is what’s killing diversity. Then why follow esc anyway? We can just sit down and watch this week’s top-40.

            • ESC is the biggest TV music show in the world. Last year there was 200 million viewers. It is for masses. Period. It’s very low brow mass entertainment, always have been always willl be. Some countries want to do commercial stuff, some don’t. Some do excellent commercial stuff, some don’t. Some do excellent uncommercial stuff, some don’t. It is about diversity. Within 40 participants there surely is room for everyone.

            • I don’t think we disagree. The thing is that average and so called radio friendly songs are now dominant. There’s little if any diversity atm.

            • There is nothing radio friendly in bland luke warm pop songs like Denmark, Ireland, Australia, Czhech et al. have this year. Unfortunately the choice is always made by national broadcasters. They have understood the formula wrong. I have said this before, I say it again. There is nothing luke warm in Sweden -11, -12, -14 and -15. They did stand out from the crowd, like it or not. I think on the commercial side of the things only Russia have taken the notes. I don’t like bland entries, I don’t like bad music whether commercial or uncommercial. I think there is bigger problem at the moment in the uncommercial side. Lots of rubbish there this year.

            • Again i don’t think we disagree.I’m ok with the lukewarm and bland pop songs description. But i don’t think Czech Rep. fits in this category. It’s a nice enough ballad.I would add Russia in it though.I feel that the show and tempo is what makes it stand out. It’s a very average pop song.

            • Yeah, I know we agree. In those two songs we totally disagree. Russia is great pop song in it’s sub category of pop ”eurodance” just like Tornero was years ago. Czech however is a very bland take on power ballad. It lacks melody. Screaming is excellent, I must admit. Let’s just agree to disagree.
My serious point is that the problem is deeper and wider than those bland radio friendly songs and in that we agree and that’s nice :-)

            • The lesson from Sweden is that you need good show too to stand out. That’s why I think in every way great commercial pop gem Latvia won’t be competing to win. Same goes to Estonia. It’s good classy pop, very commercial and it will go down well and it will go far, but we are not going to Tallinn May 2017.

            • This isn’t always the case.A very good song and an emotional live performance can do it too. This is why i believe Jamala has a chance to make it and a Ukrainian win would be so good for eurovision in general.

            • That’s true, I just can’t remember when that happened last and how good the song actually should be. I think you need nowadays song, show and singer. For me Jamala is seriously overcooking her song, but I understand totally why people love it. Not sure can it woo people in televoting. Also to hate Russia is going a bit out of fashion and hating Russia doesn’t mean loving Ukraine. Not big fan of political songs in ESC either, so I might be a bit biased in this issue.

  10. And we have more of the same; we’re getting close to ‘singing a variation of the same song’ scenario, all wrritten and composed by Swedish teams, with similar orchestrations and so on. That being said, this is one of the few that made me pay attention, because it has likeable melody and conveys drama and emotion with some kind of elegance, yes, ‘elegant’ is the most positive word I can find to describe this entry. Good luck!

P.S. – much smoother than Norway and Australia, imo.

  11. Appearently Malta has changed the song…
Ira Losco keeps hashtagging “wow”…if it is the song tittle then I am expecting something “wow” too
