Armenia: Song Released

Armenia – The national broadcaster AMPTV has released “Jako”, the song that the internally selected Ladaniva will sing to represent them in Malmö!

LADANIVA s a French-Armenian world music group originally from Lille (France). The duo, founded in 2019, consists of Armenian singer Jaklin Baghdasaryan and French multi-instrumentalist Louis Thomas. Louis from the duo, tells us more about the music of LADANIVA:

“We have been very much inspired by the local music of the French Island Reunion. It’s one of our favourite destinations and we were surprised to have found out that their rhythms are very similar to the rhythms found in Armenian songs. When we play songs with these grooves, everyone dances – in Armenia and all over the world”

Like almost all of their songs, Jako” has musical influences from various cultures. For this one, Jaklin and Louis have been strongly influenced by melodies and sounds inspired by Armenia, the Balkans, India and other diverse cultures.

Jako” is the nickname of Ladaniva’s own Jaklin. With this song, the artist asserts her right to think freely and to be whoever she wants to be. Jaklin criticises the imposition of artificial rules and restrictions by the society, which she believes lead girls to forget their true selves as they are constantly dictated on how to behave and who to be. She explains:

“They used to call me ‘Jako’ when I was little. Growing up I have always been told that girls should behave, be humble, dress normally, not talk too much, not do crazy things.”

The song is a message to herself and to all the little Jakos in the world to be true to their real, wild, unapologetic selves, and to find their true calling – just like she did through her art. It’s an invitation to ‘get up and dance’, no matter what people say.

What do you think of this entry? What are its chances in Malmö?

  1. with Belgium back in the top 5 of the betting odds all 3 of Switzerland Italy and Belgium are again top 5 and ready to take on the ludicrous top 2 ♥️ Let’s gooo credible music!

  2. I also just saw Italy is back as a comfortable 3rd over Switzerland which makes much sense imo as Italy has a known live, while we don’t know what to expect from the later

  3. On the maltese revamp : Minor but it brings some more sensuality to the chorus which was always the weakest link as it fails to be very catchy. Still not very good but solid for what it is and with a good live presentation.

  4. I will take the bait : The happiness over Switzerland failing will be huge here if it happens I believe solely because I support it.

Also funny how Greece having a temporary rise in odds makes sense without a known live and is celebrated but Switzerland being stable with a rising prospect at a much higher place is undeserved because we don’t have a known live. One could smell… Double standards?

    • No? Switzerland is suite popular on ET and both Donnie and I have it top 10 it’s just that bookies have no real clue before rehearsals and as usual send a few bucks over whatever COULD do well. Both Gre and Che are imo huge ??? before we see thrm live, hence why they keep bobbling high in bookies until we’re wiser. I just wouldnt pay attention to any of it. Some will surprise positively and some will be FFF. Every year the same

      • I am off here for the rest of the evening. Post or don’t post the previous reply I don’t care at this point.
Btw there are multiple official video premieres on the official channel coming today and tomorrow (Germany, Latvia, Finland etc) apart from Azerbaijan

        • I think you’re over reading into this. Donnie is just excited Greece is doing well and he’s always the only one on ET who’s obssessed with bookies! Everyone else is just waiting for Aze to update our list and then waiting for concerts to check some lives!

  5. About Malta, I didn’t listen to it again after the day it was selected. I think I like it more now, but there are those sound effects made for a dance show I wouldn’t mind if they weren’t that many. Guitar also noticed it sounds more sensual now so in my mind going for femme fatale aesthetics (the cover art is a bit Jessica Rabbit) would fit better than this futuristic space diva they added to the video, which was altered in a bad way.

  6. Nali, the Luxemburg singer, is apparently being attacked online because she was born in Israel? This is absurd. I can kind of see why people attack Eden since she represents Israel (tho that‘s also wrong). Eden would be smart to show public solidarity with the hostages, maybe perform at the Bring them home rally. That would also be a rebuke of Netanyahu

  7. There is some good news from the Netherlands, Wilders has finally given up trying to form a government. Most likely outcome is a governo tecnico. This has worked well in Italy and Austria.

      • Im not sure how much that played into voters‘ decisions, it seems to have broader trends like the collapse of the left in many places.

        • because the reason far right does so well is that people feel the government are people completely deconnected from their reality and their problem and far right promises very simplistic solutions targetted at people’s lower instincts (hate this, hate that, simply do this): having a technocratic government that only follows Brussels’ commission orders is the best path towards far right government, if not worse

          • Well, there needs to be a government so at least transitionally this is the best solution. Rutte’s going to NATO so his government is going to be out anyway.

      • I dislike everything about it: the pompous and plodding song, the narcissist lyrics (lyrics matter!!! Only the Danish and Swedish lyrics are worse imo …), the shouty vocals and the authentic (*cough*) attitude. Isaak was my dead last in the German NF, and I currently have Germany in 31st place on my ESC 2024 list. 🙁

        • It‘s completely forgettable (again). You know there‘ll be zero staging and the styling will be terrible as well – minor but what’s with the hair? “Er fühlt sich wohl” they’ll say. This German obsession with authenticity above all else is bizarre for musicians though the plastic ness of Sweden is usually grating as well. Look at Bambie who would have been rejected in Germany for being fake even though that’s clearly her style.

    • Losing Ryk was a big loss musically for the contest this year and for Germany having a chance to be even top 3 with the juries. Their loss.

that said I agree that after getting over some of the sourness over that this is not bad. Isaak is a good performer as well and the verses pack a punch.

  8. I ADORE this, this video, this hypster ethno vibe, these outfits, armenian music with a touch of world music and bollywood! So authentic, genuine, yet so lively, positive, and as I read lyrics in english, quite meaningful!

This is probably my fave Armenian entry ever, but I still need live of course..Dorians in Malmo 2013 will remain my faves for now, closely followed by Inga and Anush and Iveta Mukuchyan.. But if this works live.. 🤩🤩🤩

  9. For me it’s clear what this song is inspired of…. 2 folklores:
Nakhshun Baji (karabakhian folklore about a girl whom people ask to dance…. )

    And bit Shalakho

The only Bolliwood stuff here is her voice and one shouting in 1:51. ..
