ETSC 13: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 12 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. In 2018, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! Last year, Sweden and Italy, two historically big countries of Eurovision, finally won their first ETSC. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A specific article for Top 10 stats was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 13 – July 2020” will be officially held in Torino after French-speaking song “Toukassé” won.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There are some ETSC returnee… If I’m not mistaken, songs are (or at least partially) in English (20), Russian (3), Arabic (2), Romanian (2), Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Macedonian, Polish, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish, Tamasheq, Turkish and Yakut!

Tonight’s show will be hosted by Mariano di Vaio (actor), Miguel Gobbo Diaz (actor) and Vanessa Hessler (model) at the Teatro Regio in Torino!

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Tut-Tut! Here’s a surprise on stage! The fiat that will bring the flags for all participating countries:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at noon (time of Paris)! You can vote until Wednesday 22nd at midnight! Results will be revealed in the following weekend! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. So, for the first time in my life I will never set foot in the sea for the whole calendar. I guess I need to change my approach to beach holidays to that of 60s Britain to enjoy Summer this year.

  2. I hate that YouTube always automatically plays another video after you have listened to one unless you do something active to prevent it. I wish autoplay was something you had to switch on if you want it, rather than something you have to switch off if you don’t want it.

  3. I am re-doing the whole lineup whilst finalising my prediction and noticed that the UK with that type of song coming after BIH and FRA sounds like the epitome of change of pace/direction.

  4. Seriously what a horrible year this is. Now the situation in the occupied territories are very tense after another provocation. A civilian got killed in his own house and now the pro-war protesters are urging the government to take actions. I don’t even know what’s going to happen next. :/

    • Occupied? By whom? By people living in those lands near the graves of their parents and grandfathers, making 80% of the lands and who 99% democratically for independence and faced the military agression by usurpators who recieved those lands by the decision of a bloody dictator named Stalin? People who don’t want another their church for ex. Gandzasar church to become a museum or mosque?
Better don’t bring that political stuff here. And yes people should calm down . War is awful thing , war during pandemia is double tragedy.

  5. I twist my mind on who could be behind which song and man, it’s so difficult. I have a feeling that I’m completely way off most of the time :-)… of course, I’m only on board since a year, but with so many people how’s it going to become easier?:-)

  6. I took a long Robert-appropriate nap this afternonn and dreamed of Donnie, The Anders and one more ET user i forgot. A colleague of mine had a small garden with pomegranates that looked so red and fresh but when i touched them they were rotten. However, at the side of the tree there was a branch with delicious cherries. I cut them and offered one to her and then i started offering them to other garden owners. One of them was The Anders but he didn’t want it and then i turned to Donnie and the other member i can’t remember now. Then Donnie asked The Anders if he wanted a lift to work the next morning and Anders accepted asking Donnie to pick him up between 7 and 8 am. However, he doubted Donnie would be able to wake up because he had a late dinner. Donnie was baffled by what The Anders told him. The end. lol

  7. 17 songs fighting for 10 sets of points and 2 honorary mentions. And I haven’t found my winner yet …

Here are the ones that were left behind tonight:

    12 x 8/12
    9 x 7/12
    4 x 6/12
    2 x 5/12

An edition without a single song I dislike. :) On the other hand, I still have to fall madly in love with a song (except my own contribution of course) but there are 3 or 4 songs that keep growing on me and might well end up with the perfect score. :)

  8. New York held our primary elections nearly a month ago and we still don’t have all the results, it’s such a mess, and we’re not even the worst state with this. Don’t know what the big elections are gonna look like in November now…
