ETSC 13: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 12 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. In 2018, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! Last year, Sweden and Italy, two historically big countries of Eurovision, finally won their first ETSC. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A specific article for Top 10 stats was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 13 – July 2020” will be officially held in Torino after French-speaking song “Toukassé” won.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There are some ETSC returnee… If I’m not mistaken, songs are (or at least partially) in English (20), Russian (3), Arabic (2), Romanian (2), Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Macedonian, Polish, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish, Tamasheq, Turkish and Yakut!

Tonight’s show will be hosted by Mariano di Vaio (actor), Miguel Gobbo Diaz (actor) and Vanessa Hessler (model) at the Teatro Regio in Torino!

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Tut-Tut! Here’s a surprise on stage! The fiat that will bring the flags for all participating countries:

And here are our entries! Enjoy the songs:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at noon (time of Paris)! You can vote until Wednesday 22nd at midnight! Results will be revealed in the following weekend! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. And I finally got to listen to Finland. It’s weird that a Nordic song is blocked in the Nordic countries of all places. It must be an issue with the Nordic Copyright Bureau (NCB) or the national music collecting societies (KODA, STIM, TONO, TEOSTO, STEF).

  2. Narrowed it down to 15 songs after a couple of listens. 12 points are set, but below anything can still happen.

  3. Let our delegation be the first to congratulate Denmark on winning the first ETFF, or ET Film Festival. Haha

But, we do have our top 3. Our number 1 only needed 15 seconds to lock down his/her spot.

2 videos stood out because they were hilarious. Well done to the folks that chose the comedians.

  5. And I’ve finished voting.

  6. Postcards are a mess out of the bue!

  7. Done with voting. Would have been done sooner, but Denmark added 90 minutes to my listening time. Haha

I’m curious to see if anyone thinks they got my top 2 or 3. Any guesses will go uncommented by me, I promise.

  8. Weird. On my phone screen everything looks fine but on the pc screen everything’s a mess…

  9. Oh, and this has been bothering our delegation for a while: we are insulted that we were given fiats. Our delegation doesn’t ride around in fiats.

Pff, you think our Angel and our Queen would be caught dead riding middle class vehicles? Yeah right.

  10. OFFICIAL PROMOTION OF… ITALY!

  11. OFFICIAL PROMOTION OF… GERMANY!

With an artist name that pays homage to 80’s funk hero Prince and the uplifting dance beat of Gloria Estefan‘s ‘Miami Sound Machine‘, Purple Disco Machine was destined to bring together the elements of synth-pop, funk and disco.

With over 250 million streams across his works to date, and a recent run of remixes for A list stars including Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson, Robert Surace, Foals and Sir Elton John, Purple Disco Machine impresses once again, creating a modern and sophisticated take on the decade that has inspired him so greatly – the 80s.

Enlisting the help of exciting indie British newcomers Sophie and the Giants on the single, Purple Disco Machine, adds their alluring vocals to the instantly engaging melody, and funk-fuelled bassline, that has become synonymous with so many of his dance-fuelled hits.

On the live scene, Purple Disco Machine is prolific having played over 100 shows around the world in 2019 including tours in the US and South America and a coveted slot at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. He also performed at festivals around UK & Europe including We Are FSTVL, Defected London Festival, Tomorrowland, Parookaville and El Dorado as well as Ibiza residencies at Glitterbox and Pacha, cementing his status as an essential live act.

  12. I am still stuck with my post 1st listening list but I am hopeful that I will find the time to finalize my votes on the weekend. :)
