ET Awards 2021: full results

Eurovision 2021 – This year we resumed the “Eurovision Times Awards” to give prizes (the Fridas) for the best in every category!  ET regular members made recommendations and open polls were open for a full week and winners were announced. Discover the full results now!

2021 will be the eighth year for Eurovision Times to organize the Eurovision Times Awards, after last year’s contest was cancelled, preventing us from hosting this new yearly tradition. The principle of the ET Awards is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners. The winners recieve an imaginary trophee, entitled the Fridas in hommage to Frida Boccara, the French Eurovision winner in 1969 with “Un jour, un enfant“.

You can check past results if you’re curious, even though past winners will be mentioned in the upcoming articles:

  • 2013’s results here

  • 2016’s results here
  • 2017’s results here
  • 2018’s results here

In the past few weeks, the blog has played the game, recommendations, nominations, votes and winners. Now that all polls are closed and winners were announced, it does not harm to reveal the full results. We will also offer an analysis which you will be able to freely comment and disagree with.

  1. Azeri stadium security took a rainbow flag from two Danish fans, claiming they were drunk – a charge Danish staff who were nearby deny. Also Volkswagen was told by UEFA not to use rainbow colors for its in-stadium advertising in Baku and St. Pete. One can only guess the Azeris paid more to UEFA in bribes than VW paid for its sponsorship deal.

    • Yes I read about it. There will be some sort of aftermath I imagine. Thankfully, I don’t think rainbow flags will be banned in London.

What surprised me more was the fact that there were no rainbow flags to be seen in Rome during the England-Ukraine match.

      • In Italy the rainbow flag is seen equally or even more so as a “peace” flag – they were all over the place during the Iraq war for example. No idea if that has anything to do with it but I also wouldn’t think either (expat) English or Ukrainian fans would be especially likely to show rainbow flags. Come to think of it I don’t remember seeing any at the German team’s games in Munich; two of our players took the initiative: Goalkeeper Neuer always wore a rainbow-colored captains armband (which was reciprocated by Harry Kane when we played England) while Leon Goretzka criticized the Hungarian government’s intervention to block the rainbow lighting of Munich stadium – and then shot the goal that knocked Hungary out of the tournament!

          • It’s interesting how socialization affects our perceptions. It seems, being gay, that the rainbow flag has always stood for gay rights – but on closer thinking I first ran across it when Rev. Jesse Jackson ran for US president and talked about a rainbow, i.e. diverse coalition of supporters in the 1980s.

      • By the way, I sometimes wish the debate about these issues would be a little more nuanced.

I find the ban on showing rainbow flags during the matches in Baku and St. Petersburg totally unacceptable. It’s an attack on freedom of speech, especially since it concerns human rights and equality. I appreciate it when spectators showed the flags during the games, and of course when the captains wear a rainbow armband. It is a beautiful gesture.

On the other hand I tend to think it was right not to show the stadium in Munich in rainbow colours during the Germany-Hungary match. I think the article I shared some days ago put it very well. First: If the municipality of Munich had just done so as a general gesture of supporting equal rights, it would have been a different story, and probably been met with more welcome. Plus, the point about the Hungarian players being put under pressure was definitely a valid one. Not all Hungarians approve of the laws, and that may well include the players too.

There may well be shady deals involved, but I don’t think it changes the above.

          • It’s kind of intriguing that the two German players who spoke out (Neuer and Goretzka) both play for Bayern Munich, which is as corporate as it gets for a football club here; you’d expect it more from players at FC Cologne or one of the more alternative scene clubs (St. Pauli, Union Berlin). Of course there have been rumors about Neuer for a long time as well as his long-time teammate Philip Lahm (who happened to live right in the heart of the gay scene).

            • No! I dislike scandals! I prefer no drama. At all. Ever!

            • It’s just the utter state of confusion I find myself in… Showtime announced a sequel series to American gigolo, 15 years later, when Julian gets out of prison. And that film was so key to my whole “maybe I’m gay” phase and then my whole gay personal brand. But then again it won’t have Blondie or Richard Gere and Armani being launched into the global superbrand stratosphere. So I’m very conflicted on this pivotal announcement!

            • We can’t go back to 80’s, but I surely hope they do as great and iconic as Paul Schrader did with stylings, shootings, casting, soundstracking etc. Quite a task, but doable.

And just don’t forget that it was Giorgio Moroder who masterminded the soundtrack.

            • You just know it’ll be a fiasco because they’ll try to go for either an ’80s or contemporary aesthetic (“to make it relevent”), neither of which makes sense. They’ll also do sth. absurd like have a desperate Madonna do a cover version of Call me for the opening credits.

            • At least it’s not based on a comic with guys in spandex… wait, that doesn’t sound so bad!
Tom would do Netflix or HBO; B-lister Showtime doesn’t have the prestige or budget.
I need to get laid; I’m contemplating how a series that hasn’t started shooting yet could disppoint me in myriad ways!

            • I’ve to check if the other main sauna is open again as well – they have a big outdoor pool!
I AM getting ready; I’m literally having carrots as snacks.

            • Or Parliament House in Orlando! Actually I like saunas with a pool; you can get a tan while cruising AND cool off afterwards.
Carrot snacks – dire! But I’ve a deal with this guy, he and I have been circling each other for years but one of us always seemed to be dating someone while the other was single – now we’re at the same point AND both realize “I gotta lose some Corona pounds and hit the gym hard”. So end of July is the goal we set for looking like our profile pics again – otherwise no date hahaha.

            • Thanks! Keep reminding me; a pizza sounds much better than carrots right now (as always)!

            • My Mediterranean soul knew I could depend on you, my Tom of Finland!

            • Totally – soy very sensitive. Everywhere (after a 5-hour session)!

        • Personally I think any gesture with overt social or political significance on the part of sporting organisers, corporate sponsors or the sport teams themselves should be avoided. The audience should of course be free to exhibit what they like, provided they don’t target or attack anyone for any reason. But official gestures in support of this or that noble cause can be perceived as divisive and confrontational (and are often meant as such) not just by those with hostile opinions, but also by those who might think they are overbearing and out of place or simply resent it as a means of pressure exerted on their country. So in the end, they make things worse, not better for players and supporters who happen to be “in the wrong place” by creating counter-reactions. In the end, I don’t believe it’s part of the mission of sports teams to effect societal or legislative change, in their country or in others. Nor do I think that you can have meaningful international competitions in the long run, when one group of countries always feels like they are in a position to lecture another group of countries about whatever they feel is important through sporting events.

There is also the matter of these gestures being cynically used by corporate sponsors for their own publicity during a sports event or as a means of cheap and meaningless atonement for a country’s past sins (for example the past persecution of homosexuals, or anti-racism gestures by the teams of former colonial powers).

          • I think I have to agree with you.

I remember I was very angered at the booing at Russia in ESC 2014. I felt genuinely ashamed and sorry for the poor girls, and many things made me feel uneasy that year.

            • I agree with you concerning the booing. I was in the Vienna venue in 2015 and the booing towards Polina Gagarina made me feel very uncomfortable. They turned it down in the emission, you don’t hear it as prominent as it actually was. At one point, she was close to tears. I didn’t like that…

            • I was in the Copenhagen venue too for semi 1. It was a n awful atmosphere when Russia was announced as a qualifier (and generally I didn’t enjoy it very much – it works much better on television where you can actually hear and see what is going on).

Interestingly, almost everyone in the hall wanted Portugal to qualify. I remember they yelled along to the “oh-ooh-ohh” part of the chorus. In the bus back home that was all they were talking about. Not the booing of Russia.

            • You always have these fan favourites. I remember us singing completely drunk Marry Me from Krista Siegfrieds in Malmø on the bus ride home (and not even being ashamed :-))… That’s okay, that’s kind of the spirit you need live during the week.
On the other hand, serious stuff tends to be overlooked (intentionally). It seems that it doesn’t fit in this sugarcoated bubble and fans don’t want it to be there. Nevertheless, I felt sorry for this girl. I remember that somebody told me that she’s a puppet of the regime and doesn’t deserve to be treated otherwise. And I thought, before anything else, she’s a human being… and to bully her doesn’t make the bubble anything better than the ones who they protested against… but I agree it’s a difficult subject and the correct behaviour is probably often a balancing act..

            • “And I thought, before anything else, she’s a human being… and to bully her doesn’t make the bubble anything better than the ones who they protested against… ”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

          • On the other hand: banning the spectators from showing f.e. rainbow flags at the stadium is also a gesture of social or political significance from the side of the organizers. It is not easy…

          • I don’t think it’s fair to say that e.g. Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford or Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka are cynically atoning for their countries’ past sins. They have nothing to do with those past sins and likely are genuinely much more tolerant than even their parents’ generation. I mean you don’t fell compelled to atone for the military dictatorship, right? We just try to do the best we can, taking our peoples’ histories into account on some level.

          • In UK Stop The Hate campaigned a huge ad boycott with spearheads like Ikea and Vodaphone against GB News before they even started. They took a swift u-turn after counter boycots were rising amongst their customers. The GB News’ sin? Not buying metropolitan cognitive elite’s agenda. I wonder haven’t the big boys in the board rooms seen the election results in UK for past five years?
I hope some lessons were learnt from this farce.
Funny anecdote: Ikea announced the boycott about same time they were found guilty of spying their employees.

            • But isn’t that always the purpose of those who make a point of displaying virtue? To hide their own sins under the carpet or divert attention from them.

            • Yeah, it is, but in Ikea’s case I think It’s bad timing and different country. At least I hope it is. I’m angry but, I want to laugh too.
What I find here most dangerous is that so many people posing as lefties are totally fine with this kind of corporate meddling in politics and cheering for it.

            • So does Piers Morgan already have a contract in the US or why isn’t he part of GB News? I mean this was basically created for him right? Also aren’t they even tying to get Jeremy Kyle?

            • I think it’s no for both. Piers Morgan turned out be strange hate figure for progressive left. His original sin as editor of News of the World exceeds anything he did as ITV morning host. I think most of the haters outside UK has never ever saw him hosting anything.

            • Haters! I love how my Tom of Finland can turn into a Kardashian at a moment’s notice – love that versatility in u xxx.
Piers will end up at FOX once Hannity gets fired over 30 million bucks worth of lawsuits and/or Tucker (what a name btw) Carlson runs for president, causing trump to descend into complete madness.

            • But do American red necks and conservatives want to watch that snooty Brit on their tv’s? I have never understood his popularity. I find him a bad columnist, his pieces are always too long, badly edited and he is not as witty as he thinks. Same goes to his hosting.

            • Having lived for over 10 years in Texas and Louisiana, they eat it up there. I think the “posh” English accent gives people a rationalization for “it’s OK to think this – I’m not (unsexy, unlike Dante Colle) white trash”.

            • OLD? Bad! Who’s the daddy here?
Leftie – you wear boxers? No, no, no, anything but that!

            • They have Dan Wootton from Daily Mail. I think he is harder hitter than Piers. They have been beating all news programs with huge margins. In that sense the fear was understandable. Hysterics it lead to so not. Excellent free marketing progressives gave them, that’s for sure.

            • I just hate all these talking head panel shows; I dont really understand why people spend their spare time watching inane people talking over each other; it’s bad enoug when you get paid to listen to this kind of crap.
Re your earlier post – of course big companies can be benevolent and this should be highlighted. I mean, if this line of work didn’t exist I’d have to sell crappy coke to afford this apartment.

            • You got a lot of crappy coke? Or gay interracial incest porn?

      • Another aspect, however, is my unease about the fact that we live in a world where discussions and arguments have made way for statements (and smart one-word slogans with a #). That’s the flipside of the coin for me, however much sympathetic the basic message may be. I don’t think it is healthy for society, and I doubt it will have much impact on the counterpart.

      • Thanks, Elmar, appreciate it – I knew how you’d feel about this but it’s good to read anyway because all we get here is “Azeri sportswashing” and “Azeri laundromat scandal”. Which btw may be may favorite name for a political scandal ever; it sounds like some avantgarde band!

  2. Måneskin dethroned Olivia Rodrigo on the Global Spotify Top 50 chart to be #1 with Beggin’. They also moved into the Top 10 in the US and are at #9. So proud of them.

          • There’s 4th of July gay incest porn – how did I miss this? Did Dante Colle not do it?

            • I also wanted to ask what kind of porn he’s watching 🤣…
Oh, Dante Colle, I love him 😍…

            • So hot right? Your long-lost white trash cosuin and you rip each others’ clothes off in some field or haystack!

            • Cocky Boys can be hote – they really have a broad definition of boys!

            • Ricky Larkin and Markus Kage fan here :)
DC and RL have a video together if I remember correctly :P

            • I knew you’d like Markus Kage! I love how he’s totally f…versatile and up for anything.

            • So much porn is so boring because, hot as they are, you know exactly whats going to happen when you see the names. And then people do the same thing in real life and you get to a date and it’s like – sorry, boring (I’m assuming it’s still the same now hahaha)!

            • All I want is a versa guy with a stache, 5-day stubble and a pair of Olympiakos water polo team speedos!

            • Olympiakos is the most hateful club in Greece for me.
I can make an exception for their water polo team though :D

            • I get that; theyre like Bayern Munch here, just with more attractive players.

            • Haha, that sounds very Bel Ami actually… Oh yes, Dante is super hot! Do you know the Neighbour series together with Ty Mitchell and Reese Rideout? I think for at least a month I didn’t watch anything else :-)

            • I don’t actually which means I have to check it out – is that like a BROMO sub-label?
It’s always great to see guys who actually are into it; does anyone really still want to see a hot but obviouly bored Tim Krueger f*ck an even more bored Armand Rizo pretend he feels those thick 10 inches?

            • I’m not sure, it’s a men.com-production, if I’m right… I like their models and they often try to build a little narrative around it, that’s nice. They cost, but I research what looks interesting and then just google the names of the actors. Normally there are tons of other platforms where you find the videos for free…

            • MEN and Bromo are the same holding company (or whatever it’s called in porn lol) I think. Yeah I just google the relevant sites… I need to find a new fave label F*krmate has become a bit predictable. There should be more of guys switching in general.

            • Just checked Bromo, yes, it’s obviously the same format. Nice, looks promising!
I can recommend MEN, I don’t grow tired since a few years already. My favourite has been William Seed, but now I’m a total fan of Roman Todd. You should google him together with Mark Long and Ty Thomas. The clip is called ‘Brothers Share’ (which would bring us back to the 4th of July-scene;-)), that’s my favourite at the moment…

            • I need to check that out, thx! MEN and Bromo are usually very white tho – I like to mix it up a bit!

            • That’s right. They have only a few blacks. Angelo di Jackson being one of them, I think…

            • I love De Angelo Jackson – he’s daddy, brother and cousin all roled into one!

            • Yep, that’s why I like him…:-)… he pretty much serves the role pattern I’m searching for:-)…

            • I love TT – its massive, multi-ethnic and rough without being trashy – just a couple of their guys look bored by now (which killed Raw Strokes for me – ok but then their guys were not as clean-cut as TT or F*krmate).

  3. So what happened with the Greek waterpolo team?? I missed it, being involved in various discussions about versatile interracial gay incest porn.

  4. Keep posting football chants connected with Eurovision:

“Back home”, the English chant from World Cup 1970, performed by the English National Team. Written by the same guys who wrote “Puppet on a string” and “Congratulations”, and honestly, it sounds almost like a mix between these two.

Or I don’t know, it sounds also a bit like a stereotypical soldiers marching song from World War II, lol.
