ET Awards 2013: Best Lyrics!

Eurovision Times AwardsEurovision 2013 – Every year, the summer is a long season for the Eurovision community as there are no news coming out for the following edition so it’s the perfect time to do more games and contests! This year we introduce the “Eurovision Times Awards”, based on Oscars, to give prizes for the best in every category! And you get to vote!

2013 will be the first year for Eurovision Times to organize a new contest. After TEKO which takes place before the contest, from now on we will host the “Eurovision Times Awards” after the contest too. The principle is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners.

The first award is in the “Technical” category and it’s “Best Lyrics”. Here are the results of the recommendations made by the regular users of Eurovision Times in this category:

  • 8 Greece
  • 6 Netherlands
  • 6 Norway
  • 5 France
  • 5 Malta
  • 4 Hungary
  • 4 Italy
  • 1 Cyprus
  • 1 Denmark
  • 1 Montenegro
  • 1 Spain

However, it’s down to the staff of Eurovision Times to choose the official nominees. But it’s up to you to vote in our poll below which song had the best lyrics this year! You need to click on the country’s name to be redirected to the Diggiloo site for an the lyrics or an English translation. The nominees in alphabeticl order are:

  • Greece, written by Stathis Pachidis
  • Hungary, written by Alex Márta (ByeAlex)
  • Malta, written by Boris Cezek & Dean Muscat
  • Norway, written by Karin Park, Robin Lynch & Niklas Olovson

Rules: the polls will be open for a week. At the end of the week, an article will announce the winner of the category but not the detailed results. The full results will however be given to you once all polls are closed so that you don’t get influenced (we never know) in your following votes. Every IP gets only one vote, please do not cheat, do take in consideration to read all lyrics before voting and do not vote necessarly for your favorite song but vote regarding the category. Of course, it’s pointless to vote only for your own country unless you’re really certain it should win. May the best win!

  1. Obviously all 5 entries of the above poll are TOP stuff when it comes to lyrics.
Voting for “Alcohol is free”. Perfect balance between fun and food for thought.Glad to see that singing in native language didn’t prevent such great lyrics being recognised for their artistic value!
PS : Wondering why France was left behind…( although I do agree that the French lyrics are not that great to be among 5 best )

  2. All 5 songs have fantastic lyrics but I voted for ‘Birds’ because I love the following lines:

“If being myself is what I do wrong
Then I would rather not be right”

    • . because it is such an intelligent way to describe the necessary self-denial inherent in love … while we all think that “Love will set us free”, the sweet poison of love tends to corrupt what we truly are … ;)

P.S. Love is a lovely experience nevertheless but I prefer it in homeopathic doses … :)

  3. Greece and France were the countries that had 12/12 in lyrics this year, and since France wasn’t nominated, my choice went for Greece (it would probably have done it still). I’m not even sure if I understand the metaphors in the lyrics, but the way they are constructed is just great so they have my vote.

  4. That was a tough call.I love Norway,Greece and Hungary but i ended up voting for the lyrics of “Kedvesem”.The Greek lyrics are witty and a funny bittersweet statement on our current situation both socially and from a political point of view.”I feed you my love” is a daring and dark little poem but i have a soft spot for “Kedvesem’s” haunting lyrics.

  5. Voted for Greece, in the end.

A hard category with five great candidates for the role. I love Hungary’s lyrics, but the Greek lyrics were more intelligent.

  6. Hmm, this was tough… Greece, the Netherlands and Norway all score 12/12 from me for the lyrics, and Hungary and Malta are not far behind, scoring 10 and 8 respectively.

I ended up voting for the Netherlands’ lyrics however, as they are intriguing and intelligently written, and complement perfectly the sombre mood established by the music.

  7. Norway, the only song to earn 10/10 for lyrics from me. I love the different meanings that can be construed from the poetic lyrics. However, all of these represent the best of ESC 2013’s lyrics.

  8. Sometimes it is OK to reward simplicity, therefore Malta gets my vote.

Plus, it’s the summer and its 31 Celsius over here, and I don’t want to waste energy thinking about who has hidden lyrics, allegories, and layered lyrics lol. Malta is nice and simple.

  9. I voted Greece. When I first heard the Greece song I wasn’t overly blown way all those months ago, but one of the things that made me love them apart from meeting the guys themselves who were fun, was when I first saw what the lyrics meant. Very clever stuff. Whilst some of the other songs, have very poetic lyrics, I like how Greece mixes the poetry with current affairs and humour.

    • Agathonas is reason alone to love “Alcohol is free”. Not only because of his artistic abilities, but because he’s like an incarnation of a typical Greek older gentleman when it comes to his looks. He’s that kind of guy you’d expect to see sitting outside a bar playing backgammon all day long. :)
