The One That Got Away: Best 2nd Place…The Results

Poll Result – Earlier in the week we asked you to choose which was your favourite song of all those that nearly made it in their national finals. The latest poll was for songs that only made 2nd place and you voted a lot! We can reveal that your favourite second song by quite a margin was…

Mikael Saari from Finland with “We Should Be Through”. Mikael was the favourite to win UMK before being surprisingly beaten by Krista with her song “Marry Me”.

  1. Oh yes Mikael Saari was the best out of this bunch of songs. If Finland had send him probably they would be the big favorite for the victory (and not Denmark). I’m also happy for the 4th place of Alex Leon and Giorgina. I expected also Grete to have been ranked higher. The other songsthat i liked are in the middle of the scoreboard (Serbia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Romania). As for the 2nd and 3rd place for Adelen and YOHIO each, just NO COMMENT :S

  2. A well deserved victory for Mikael! If only he was the one representing Finland…:(
Adelen and Yohio shouldn’t be that high IMO.Grete should be higher.

      • I was told by one of my friends here who has my email (that’s a lot of people lol) that you asked where I was, which touched me, but I still dont really want to get back into all the fights. I mean as soon as I’m back the forum turns back into a pro-anti-greece war again, I’m that unlucky but Ukraine deserved a honorable mention for a great eurythmics-like entry that probably wouldnt have scored as high as Disney-on-acid but would have been a huge turn of events for Ukraine after their greek-soldiers-on-wheels-with-sand-on-the-back-and-feather-in-the-hair

  3. Yay! I’m glad the best song won in the end, even if both Norway and Sweden scored much higher than they deserved (go figure…). I’m surprised at how well Belarus and Ireland did, and I expected Estonia and Romania to rank higher.

  4. Truth be told, the top 3 finishers here each had different glaring weaknesses that could not be overcome.

In Saari’s case, it was the total lack of charisma, stage presence, and connecting with the voters. He may have sung great, but he lost to someone who can also sing, and absolutely runs laps around him charisma and staging wise. And as great as he sings, his song would be a question mark to advance from the semi final, while the winning entry will make the final easily.

In Adelen case, it was a poor vocal performance and a case of inexperience and nerves. Although this experience will pay off in the long run, she was nowhere near ready to be attempting to win qualification to eurovision. The reason the song has made it this far, in Norway and the voting here, is because of the song itself. At the end of the day, a more experienced singer won in Norway, although the song was not half as good. Although many will dispute the last part of that sentence. And yes, I hated having to write this paragraph. I fought hard not to delete it lol.

In Yohio’s case, it was also a poor vocal performance and not connecting with the international jury. Although the act itself is memorable, and is most of the reason it has placed highly in the Swedish televoting and the voting here, it lost out to a better vocal performance and a more eurovision friendly entry, a safe europop song. And I have my doubts that this would have qualified from the semi had Sweden not gotten direct qualification as hosts.

  5. A really well deserved WINNER !
Finland made a big mistake this year ! Krista may have all the stage charisma in the world but her song is nothing to write home about not even in the funny pop field…Jedward reloaded.
“We should be through” would have been the 2013 Kuula…The fact it is in English would make a top 5 even more possible in Malmo!Krista will fight for a place between 10-16 imo…
    BIG MISTAKE !

    • There was no mistake made. A song and performance better suited for eurovision won. Better staging, better charisma, and better than average vocals as a bonus.

Which voter would have remembered anything about the performance once it was over?

Estonia and Cyprus have these kind of songs and are fighting for their lives.

And I know this website is not a representative sample, but compare and contrast the reactions to the winning entry as time has passed. At first its was just dismissed as complete nonsense but slowly, after seeing that the singer can sing, after watching the video, and after getting to know the very busy in the promotion department artist, opinions are starting to turn.

And sure, my opinions may be dismissed as pure bias, but I was not a super fan of this after one listen either. I liked it at first, thought it was good for a chuckle or two, but it didn’t get truly awesome until repeated viewings and listens. And that so great video sure helped as well.

But I do understand the frustration when a song you really like does not win qualification. Obviously I have of few as well. I guess the disappointments are part of the fun of the national finals and eurovision scene as well. When you have the passion us super fans do, the disappointments hurt more I guess.

      • Unfortunately you only have one shot once on eurovision stage. Repeated listenings are for hardcore fans AND ONLY…
You really can’t compare “Marry me” to “We should be through” ( quality-wise ). It’s like comparing gold to dust…(IMO)

        • Marry me is more than the song, it is a package. You get entertainment value, you get energy you get fun. You get to laugh and be silly and over the top, with a wink, and have a good time for 3 minutes.

And the song itself, as satire and comedy, is quality in my opinion. And the staging is second to none. Even those people watching, and the jury itself are going to smile once this comes on, even if they don’t vote for her.

And speaking of the jury, nobody asked for my opinion, but at the dress rehearsal I would not do any staging or costumes, I would do the song straight to make sure the jury focuses on the vocals and not anything else.

            • I’m not trying to be funny or sarcastic in any way, I would actually like to see this, but can you point me to where it says this in the official rules? I read them a few days ago and did not see that part.

Again, I really do want to be pointed to the rest pertaining to the dress rehearsal. No jokes for once.

  6. Just a question, since “L’essenziale” was selected in San Remo festival and we know who were the 2nd and the 3rd there, why didn’t we have Italy in this poll?

    • because san remo is not a national final, and beforehand anyone could go to the contest depending on whom Rai asks and says yes… the fact that this year the winner goes to the contest should not mean that, if Marco said no, the second choice by Rai was going to be the song that finished second

  7. Expected, Mikael Saari was a huge fan favourite and the backlash against poor Krista was huge after the UMK final. I believe Krista will do better than Mikael would do in the contest result – wise. I like the song though, although I would prefer Greta Paia (I expected a better result for her).
    Adelen 2nd ?! Ok..
YOHIO and Alex Leon and Giorgina in 3rd and 4th place is a satisfying result :) !
