    • even if belgium has amateurs with only work material while austria has only finalized songs, you can tell the huge GAP in quality between the two countries!! Is it because Austria is returning only now? Is it because it’s in Germany? The level is amazingly high, and there’s only a few songs below average there… so far this is my list, but a lot of songs i must watch live first :

Alf Poier & Obersteirische Wolfshilfe – Happy Song 12/12
Cory Bantic & Chris Schaller – Try to forget her 12/12
Robi Faustmann – Neuer Wind 11/12
Oliver Wimmer – Let love kick in 11/12
Klimmstein feat. Joe Sumner – Paris, Paris 11/12
      Sellyy – Lethargie 10/12
Excuse Me Moses – Way out 10/12
Any Major Dude – July 9/12
Mary Broadcast Band – Who’s gonna stop me 9/12
Trackshittaz & Lukas Plöchl – Oida Taunz 8/12

Julian Heidrich – Australian Gate 8/12
      Luttenberger & Klug – Sternenlichter 7/12
Petra Frey – Send a little smile 7/12
Lana Gordon – Ask the universe 7/12
      bandWG – 10 Sekunden Glück 7/12
      Freddy Sahin-Scholl – Butterfly 7/12
Alkbottle – Wir san do net zum Spaß 7/12
Louie Austen – Make your move 7/12
      Matara – Why do I 7/12
Charlee – Good to be bad 7/12
      Eva K. Anderson – I will be here 7/12
      Jean Nolan – Crazy 6/12
Axel Wolph & Feeltank Orchestra – My little reminder 6/12
Nadine Beiler – The secret is love 6/12
Leo Aberer – There will never be another you 6/12
Cama – Times of our lives 6/12
      Heinz aus Wien – O Cosi 5/12
Richard Klein – Bigger better best 4/12
Katie Lunette – My home 4/12
      Missy May – It’s a girl’s life 3/12

      • i already went at your blog, you do look like a fine devoted person to your music, i think it was courageous to go for a song in lovely German… I now prefer Oliver’s song, just so smart and enjoyable all together, and Oliver knows how to deliver. I hope you get a chance in top 10 to defend your song live, lives matter a lot in Eurovision world ! best of luck !

  1. Well, they chose a lot of the good ones, but they also chose 3 joke acts/craps = Richard Klein, Alf Poier & Louie Austen.

I’m sad that HMBC didn’t make it and we didn’t even get to hear their song. :( Ecliptica was also one of the most awesome ones, but they removed the clip of their song from the site and didn’t choose them. Too bad.

Basically Austria received many, many good songs, but chose about 50/50 good/bad here… I feel they wasted 3 spots on those 3 joke act craps.

    Klimmstein FTW!

    Alkbottle #2.

    • true, Richard Klein is annoying and cheap, Louis Austen is an average joke entry, but Alf Poier is no joke entries : he has his own style and the song is definitely very very strong !

i didnt listen to other songs, but in general they chose a really strong line-up and they let many styles enter !

      • i don’t like alf in 2003 much, apart from the backing singers and the bridge part, the song doesn’t do it for me (sure lyrics are ok but…)
whereas in the 2005 selection Alf came with stronger songs especially “Hotel, hotel” (but the 2005 austrian NF was brilliant with Global Kryner’s “Dreaming”, Marque’s “In the universe” and Mystical Alpin’s both songs).. i think this is the best Alf Poier’s song ever, it’s got an atmosphere, a feeling to it, it’s a very mature song, and if Alf tops the performances he usually does, this could do the trick for me (but i doubt Europe would).. again this is quite a strong line up, and a great performance by anyone could really make it one of the songs of the year for me ! but as it is, i consider Alf’s song the best in Austria

  2. The Austrian NF has pretty good material on offer. Without having listened to Alkbottle’s song (the link isn’t working) and before hearing these hopefuls live, these are my top 10 songs in random order: ‘Neuer wind’, ‘Let love kick in’, ‘Happy song’ (this one caught me by surprise), ‘Lethargie’, ‘Times of our lives’, ‘July’, ‘Australian gate’, ‘Why do I’, ’10 sekunden glück’ and ‘Sternenlichter’.

  3. I have always liked Alf Poier but I never expected him to actually have the best song of this fantastic bunch. Honestly, I think that Austria has set new standards of quality regarding ESC preselections with those 30 songs. There isn’t a single bad song, and even the last one on my list (Missy May) still gets a 5/12, a score high enough to bring a songs into my top 5 in most NFs. 12 songs got a 9/12, 10/12 or 12/12 from me which means that I really, really like them.

    Here are my absolute tops:

    1. Alf Poier und die obersteirische Wolfshilfe – Happy Song (That one is simply fantastic and very special imo.)
    2. Robi Faustmann – Neuer Wind (The song has a very typical German pop music sound in the best way possible.)
    3. Eva K. Anderson – I Will be Here (Very beautiful simple ballad.)
    4. Cama – Time of Our Lives (I love everything that even slightly reminds me of Fleetwood Mac.)
    5. Trackshittaz & Lukas Plöchl – Oida Taunz (Fantastic mix of modern and ethnic sounds. I cannot stop dancing. :) )
    6. Selly – Lethargie (Perfectly represents the German language pop music scene imo.)

Any of those 6 songs would bring Austria into my top 5 for 2011 for sure!

Now I only hope that Freddy Sahin-Scholl won’t win only because he is so popular atm. Don’t get me wrong, his song isn’t bad, but there is much better on offer.

    • even though we so often agree, it’s definitely got me a tiny bit worried because this time it was from a country quite close to you

but here again we agreed perfectly that the level was great great great in Austria… I was definitely tougher in my rankings out of 12 but I guess it’s because I’m most anticipating about the live performances…

We almost have the same top 2 and I really like “Oida Taunz” and wish it’s got a great performance… I’m glad both Robi and Selly make it to your top : i don’t understand German, but without it i hit the right choices :p

one song in your top 6 i don’t get.. for Eva, it was just surrounded by so many other ok ballads that it ended up being quite similar and not that relevant to me

  4. I’ve finally managed to listen to Alkbottle’s song and my top 10 hopefuls remain unchanged. It’s very hard to rank these 30 songs, Austria came back with all guns firing. Yesterday, late in the evening, I heard ‘Times of our lives’ for the first time and fell for it immediately. I love the melody, the musical arrangements, the vocals (so far) and it’s my nº 1 choice:

    1. ‘Times of our lives’
    2. ‘Neuer wind’
    3. ‘Happy song’
    4. ‘Lethargie’
    5. ‘Let love kick in’
    6. ‘Why do I’
    7. ‘July’
    8. ‘Sternenlichter’
    9. ‘Australian gate’
    10. ’10 Sekunden Glück’

Welcome back, Austria. 2011 is looking better and better.

    • Shevek we have 6 songs in common, and out of the other 4, there’s my 11th, 12th and 14th (bandWG was one of the best promos, with great other songs on the page but i’m just not a fan of their esc song as much)

but you and togravus both have something for CAMA which I really don’t get at all : it’s like in belgium where i don’t get Steve and Léa from you guys, the sweet little thing really doesn’t do it for me at all!

apparently i’m the only one who thought Cory Bantic & Chris Schaller brilliant ! i guess i’ll have to relisten but mostly wait for the lives

      • Hey, I have never supportet Léa or Steve in the Belgian NF. Grrrrr!

Btw, I have Cory Bantic & Chris Schaller’s song in 7th place (10/12, which still is a very good score …). On ‘Time of Our Lives’: As I have said, I simply love everything that reminds me of Fleetwooc Mac because my parents always listened to them when we went to Greece, Portugal etc. by car when I was still young. It is the sound of freedom and sunshine to my ears. :)
Finally, on ‘I Will Be Here’: It is miles above the other fine ballads in this final imo. A very well-crafted song!

      • lol true, but you probably did like somewhere a cheezy lil song i wouldn’t go for

glad to hear they’re 7th which proves they sit right below the greater stuff and with a good live i’m sure they’ll make it to your top too

i’ll give Eva another chance but if Shevek doesn’t even have it in his top, i’md doubtful lol

ps : funny we have the same last too

      • ‘but you probably did like somewhere a cheezy lil song i wouldn’t go for’

I’ll give you one. It is not really cheesy but one of those shake your butt songs … I love Belgium 2004. *blush* As for cheesy … I have a soft spot for Yohanna’s dolphin …

        You? Always only high quality?

      • i don’t hate belgium 2004 in music, like it’s old fashioned upbeat but i can live with it, but the live performance killed it so badly (it seriously would have done top 10 way more than spain with a huge performance)

the dolphin oh my god hate it, hate yohanna’s dress, performance,e verything screams cheesy and rats of all countries join to claim that cheese

hmmm… i do “like” a few too-melted fromage horrors, but i keep my senses they are horrors and still have them bottom on my list even if i go listen to them every now and then.. don’t make me say which though :p

      • I have Steve and Léa on my top 14 Belgian entries, because the level there is much lower than in the Austrian NF. ‘I will be here’ in my nº 11 and your nº 10 in my nº 12. All of these songs are better that the majority of the Belgian hopefuls. I must say that Austria has laid down the gauntlet.

  5. Very good bunch of songs, it’ll be a very good NF for Austria.
My fave is Oliver Wimmer-Let Love Kick In, but none of my choices have made it through so far so I’m not getting my hopes up. (Claudia Pavel-I want you to want me, CH-Gib Nid Uf and Miriam Cani & Alban Skenderaj-Ende ka shpresë)

    • Thanks Morgan, I like some of them.. I will copy paste my esctoday comment here, much easier!

Piufff..so many songs!! …finally I got through and here my results..

Alf Poier & die obersteirische Wolfshilfe “Happy Song”
this is my winner, funny it sounds more melancholic than a happy song. And that is what I like most in this song, nice melody and touching!

Other songs I liked in no order:

Eva K. Anderson “I Will Be Here

      CAMA “Time Of Our Lives”

      Freddy Sahin “Butterfly”

Klimmstein feat. Joe Sumner “Paris, Paris”

Good luck to all of them, wish the best one will win

I see we me, you and Toggie have the same winner!!! :D

  6. christopher’s song was called s’envole if I remember it rite.. Toggie and shevek had it in their list too..
Time to sleep now, hope my lovely neighbours will let me sleep tonight.
    Good night to everyone
    ciao!

  7. Hi, Lilith/Roselil! :)

Morgan, here is ‘On s’envole’ by Christophe Lorient. It would be right up there with ‘Elle merveille’, had it qualified for the following stage of the Belgian NF. Ignore the video and concentrate on the song.

I am very sure that ‘Times of our lives’ and ‘Neuer wind’ are my nos. 1 and 2 Austrian hopefuls, btw. :)

P.S.: On cheesy songs: I have no problem saying that I may like cheesy songs. There is good cheese and bad cheese. Iceland 09 falls under the category of excellent cheese.
