  1. Horribly annoying verses with terrible lyrics, basic chorus, average singer. It’s a 5/10 from me which will end up as a 4/10 because of the penalty (another year of attention wh@ring and foreign composing team?), Juging by the clip, it shows they are less ambitious this year. Borderline Q. If Serbia was in semi 1 this would have been dead in the water imo

  2. Morgan said it the best, this is not a new song, it is Cleopatra but revamped. When I said earlier that it’d be funny if they picked Mata Hari and stayed with the women in history theme, I didn’t think they would be keeping what is essentially the same song too. I’m now beginning to think that titling this Mata Hari was a conscious effort to specifically allude to their last song, which is surprising because a lot of people seemed to hate it and they were nowhere near a frontrunner. But anyways, the song isn’t horrible, it’s a standard ethno-pop and I like the dance break at the end, but it’s nothing too interesting. An improvement from Cleopatra but still a slim one. I don’t want to prematurely judge Efendi but she didn’t seem like too engaging of a performer in the video so I worry about whether she can bring this to life on stage or whether she’ll flop.

Redid my rankings to more accurately express my opinions. Gonna do things like this from now on until we have every song and I can use Mr. Gerbear to sort them. I put them into categories in alphabetical order instead of just a straight ranking.

  3. Disappointing re-hash of 2020 with atrocious liar-fire-desire lyrics; clearly AZE is in a
    dire
    quagmire
    needs to hire
someone to set the stage on fire.

  4. Its insane how they not only managed to re-make the same song and yet make a reference to it in the “new” song but severely downgrade the budget for the video lol. I do like it more than last year because it is darker and I like the more minimalist aesthetics of the clip. With a tasteful live it can be not awful at least. So yeah won’t be my last this year (sorry Slovenia) but not that much higher. I mean… It’s the same song after all.

  5. This will easily qualify and do well in the final 😉

I love it. More rhythmic and catchier than her previous song .
The best part for me is when a Turkish folk music “Konyalım” kicks in at 2:05❤️I love she references to Cleopatra as well .. The video is OK, Efendi sounds fine but she needs to be dancing more on the stage especially for the last part

  6. Hahaha, maybe some ppl will be surprised, but Im quite positivelly surprised, especially regarding ethnic elements, surprisngly for me, but they used REAL ethnic elements this time, musically… They are like Anatolian music elements from Central Turkey or some Arabic (sound Egyptian or Lybian to me), I still think it lacks vocals a bit, it is not demending vocally, Im sceptical about live..and lyrics are “meeeh” to me, still better than last year…
I also like Arabic hand choreography, i hope she will use it in Rotterdam.. :)
I give 7 or 8.. It is overall much better than 2020 in my book. :)

    • Azerbaijani as well since they heavily use the instruments in their music
Instruments belong to regions not countries

  7. I like this much better than “la Cleopatrrrah” mainly because of the Bollywood flavour which makes the chorus something you can actually dance to. In the beginning I was put off by the rough accent in the verses, but now I think if the keep this caricature of a Bond villainess they might be on to something? Having some actual ethnic touches (isn’t that instrument a zurna?) is also a plus compared to last year. What I don’t get is what is the purpose of this loud/noisy and abrupt ending.

  8. This has been a busy day, I see. No Belarus 21 yet though. Let’s get down to business, then. Azerbaijan 21 clearly needs a different singer, Efendi is no Mata Hari. not even close. The lyrics are poor and the chorus is tiresome. The orchestratuon has some interesteing aspects, but it wants to be many things at the same time. Waiting for a live rendition. Good luck!

  9. Efendi’s feeling comfy in her niche of glorifying historical tragic temptresses. Much like Mata Hari was a lousy spy this is lazy recycling of “Cleopatra”. But there are elements that are really good (Thanks, Mermy for the “Konyalım” reference!). Since no other song has gone down that road I do think that Azerbaijan can do well. Good luck! Fingers crossed for “Boudica” next year!

  10. I hated her entry last year but this time it is my favourite uptempo of the year (waiting for the live performances). She is captivating, I think it’s something in her eyes :) I think she is an experienced singer and Azerbaijan will make a good show. The video is really bad, hopefully they are saving money.

  11. I don’t like it, it’s a below average ethno-pop song imo, sounds a bit cheap to me. It’s in my bottom 5 for now.
