ETSC 13: Get to know the songs!


ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 12 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. In 2018, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! Last year, Sweden and Italy, two historically big countries of Eurovision, finally won their first ETSC. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 13 – July 2020” will be officially held in Torino after French-speaking song “Toukassé” won.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There are some ETSC returnee… If I’m not mistaken, songs are (or at least partially) in English (20), Russian (3), Arabic (2), Romanian (2), Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Macedonian, Polish, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish, Tamasheq, Turkish and Yakut!

Tonight’s show will be hosted by Mariano di Vaio (actor), Miguel Gobbo Diaz (actor) and Vanessa Hessler (model) at the Teatro Regio in Torino!

  2. I can’t tell where my 12 pts went in the past. When I bought a new computer earlier this year, I copied all files but somehow my ETSC/FdlC/VFoS excel file got lost. :(

    If I remember correctly, I gave 12 pts to the winning song once (Gold Shadow) … and most other 12 pts went to Greece … <3

        • We exchanged 12 pts in that edition, just like Malta and Slovakia did in ESC again and again all those years ago.

          Btw, the other day, your song came up while I was in the car with my sister. She said: ‘I love this song, but do you think that it is appropriate for driving a car?’

          • I never listen to music while driving. But if I were to decide if it was appropriate for driving or not, it would more be a question of whether or not the sound of the motor drowns out the music. Music with heavy dynamic shifts between forte and piano would suffer. Which is why I don’t enjoy music in the car.

            • I mostly listen to shake shake stuff when driving the car, and I love singing along on the top of my lungs (but only when I am alone in the car). *blush*

      Was it you who recommended Mucho Mucho Amor to watch in an earlier post? I am sure I seen it mentioned but couldn’t find it looking backI. I watthed it last night and loved it. What a fabulous character and person was Walter Mercado. Loved it.

        • Wonder who it was. Either way it is worth a look. More a documentary but an interesting and enjoyable watch. His story is fascinating and lovely.

  7. My votes are in! Had a clear 12 pts, then a clear 10 pts. My 6 to 8 points were in a tier, then the rest of my points and 11th/12th were in a tier close by and it was tough ranking them. Had a tough time cutting my 13th place from my Top 12, I’ll make sure to give it an honourable mention during the results night.

    Cmon, our delegation can skip this part right? If we win, the world is going to end most likely so there won’t be another edition anyway.

    Let’s not put mankind in any danger; Let’s place where we are comfortable, ie anywhere between 40 and 45.

    If not, I know for a fact that we can’t choose hell as the place because it’s going to freeze over the day we win, and thus be unsuitable due to the low temperatures.

  11. Maybe a reason France does well in July, in football and ETSC: the national holiday is on the 14th!

    In the US they call it “Bastille day” which is funny coz legally it’s not a celebration of the 14th of July 1789 but of the 14th of July 1790, when France held a “Federation Party” to celebrate the 1 year of the Bastille. Not a bit difference, but a little known fact ;)
