ETSC 13: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 12 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. In 2018, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! Last year, Sweden and Italy, two historically big countries of Eurovision, finally won their first ETSC. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A specific article for Top 10 stats was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 13 – July 2020” will be officially held in Torino after French-speaking song “Toukassé” won.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There are some ETSC returnee… If I’m not mistaken, songs are (or at least partially) in English (20), Russian (3), Arabic (2), Romanian (2), Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Macedonian, Polish, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish, Tamasheq, Turkish and Yakut!

Tonight’s show will be hosted by Mariano di Vaio (actor), Miguel Gobbo Diaz (actor) and Vanessa Hessler (model) at the Teatro Regio in Torino!

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Tut-Tut! Here’s a surprise on stage! The fiat that will bring the flags for all participating countries:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at noon (time of Paris)! You can vote until Wednesday 22nd at midnight! Results will be revealed in the following weekend! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. Sometimes I hate the online world. I have listened to all ETSC songs (except mine of course …) once, but whatever YT clip I watch (CNN, history documentaries, Brahms’ violin concerto …), I get the Ukrainian ETSC song on top of my recommendations. I wonder who payed for that …

  2. OMG tonight on Fr3 there was, like every Saturday night “what was on TV in…” and it was 1983 and they had a whole bit about France Tv taking over Eurovision from TF1 and the NF that Compagnie Créole lost to Guy Bonnet!

  3. Finally got a chance to listen through all the songs…I think this is the best edition in terms of number of diverse, quality songs that I’ve listened to. I’ll say that maybe I enjoy my Top 2-3 of previous editions a bit more, but the standard of quality is high here.

Very much love the increased hip hop influences in this edition, as one of the few rap fans on this forum haha.

Pretty set in the couple of top songs for me, but we’ll see on a 2nd listen. 1 song I think screams winner to me, and could threaten Junior Brielle’s points record.

  4. I think that there are two to three smaller favourites in the running, but nothing is decided. It will depend on the mood the people are in while voting, since there are so many different styles.
I had from first listening on one big personal favourite high above the rest, but I’m not so sure how it will fare apart from my 12.
From 2 to 9, I’m yet quite undecided and then it’s a few battling for the last point…

  5. My 12 points to date since I began ETSCing. Who will join them?
    ETSC5: 🇮🇪 (8th place)
    ETSC6: 🇬🇧 (4th place)
    ETSC7: 🇷🇸 (6th place)
    ETSC8: 🇪🇸 (13th place)
    ETSC9: 🇨🇭 (Winner)
    ETSC10: 🇨🇭 (3rd place)
    ETSC11: 🇸🇪 (Winner)
    ETSC12: 🇮🇹 (Winner)
    ETSC13: 🙊

  6. Some very aggressive promo here, Hjallis ? :P

  7. I’m listening again to the songs in running thirds this time as it’s much easier to rank 15 entries each time :)
I’m in the middle third today (#16-30)

  8. The one and only time I did a promo for my entry I came dead last (VFoS Rotting Christ) :P

  9. I can tell now who is behind Ukraine 🇺🇦.

  10. Michos votes are in. On song displaced another in my initial top12 but other than that no changes compared to first impressions.

My 12 points go to the guy they are fighting over in the greek video, the israeli singer and the husband in the french video :)

    • Michos votes or not, you have only one twelver! Have to check the Greek video as I have only listened the song. Both Israeli and French hotties short listed here 😃
      You were very fast, BTW!

    • So you’re saying I should check out Greece (which I would anyway), Israel (ditto) and France?

      • See my reply to Hjallis above :)

        • 10 points for sure; I’ll have to see him with his jacket off to make sure about 12.

          • Shouldn’t you be in some after after after party taking K and C and E and rest of the alphabet umlauts included?

            • Hahaha, only an ignorant cretin like you would not know the Umlaut ballet never performs in the northern hemisphere in summer months!
Honestly, I was a bit surprise to find the city has come back to life less than Colgne or Hamburg. Of course the impact of missing tourism is more keenly felt here.# – none of the usual NY banker daddies strolling down Motzstrassse premiering their way-too-unused looking gear.

            • Now that’s the plastic and cliched gay look of this century.

            • I always hate people wearing gear that implies they like stuff that they are too boring to like. Worst are these ill-fitting mail order leather pants/chaps. Latest local thing seems to be some sort of shiny glittery Adidas (plus!) sweatpants. What is the point??? Looks cheap and you get the same benefits with regular sweats.
Are Magnum PI short shorts making a comeback? Hot guy at hotel breakfast (a mess – less staff, obviously, when they needed more actually) wore them and he was so flawlessly styled I gotta think it’s a returning trend.

            • Oh yes, it is! They have been popping up quite some time now. Very hot.
As for gear I don’t think unworn tired Mister B / RoB ”uniforms” are any better than online purchases. They only tell you have more money, but not enough style or love for the sports to go custom.

            • It – the gear, not the Magnum PI shorts – has become sort of a commodity now. Half of it seems to be candy coloured whatever the point is.

  11. Good luck today Poland

  12. Briefly panicked when I thought votes were due THIS Wednesday.

  13. Got to say one half of this running order is quite stronger than the other.

  14. The Swiss song felt recently victim of my strict equity principles in VFoS. Back then I asked the player to do some homework and come again with more info. In the end I might have scared him off aliveness he decided to bring forward something else instead. Let’s see if he saved it the Swiss one for ETSC after all.

  15. I finished the second listening of all songs but one. Now I hope imusic.dk won’t let me down.

  16. Second listening done, 16 have been left behind even though they were all fine entries (bar a few) but the rest just appealed more, so 28 songs made the cut.
Of those, 13 have scores between 8 and 9.
I will relisten to the 15 others again and see if they can do any damage to the 13 favourites.
Should be ready to vote in a couple of days.
I think there are 3 or 4 songs which could take this edition. Certainly bloodbath material in there.
    Enjoyable much. 😊

  17. Morgan, are you going to put the Finnish entry to Dailymotion?

  18. Second run-through finished. A song i just find ok on first listened has broken into my top-10. I think should give all songs a second chance.

  19. Having listened to the songs: weaker edition. Good luck to everyone.

  20. Once I get home I’ll work on a few things: adding a countdown of votes (5 in so far), adding the new promos (I got 3 or 4 more) ans trying to sort the Finnish issue which is the most problematic (some players couldnt even listen to it)

  21. I have bronchitis caused by covid19 as medic told me, they gave me 2 antibiotics. Tomorrow I go to rendgen of laungs to check!

  22. Official promo hint of …: 🔱.

  23. Next official promo-hint: 🦅
