ETSC 13: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 12 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. In 2018, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! Last year, Sweden and Italy, two historically big countries of Eurovision, finally won their first ETSC. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A specific article for Top 10 stats was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 13 – July 2020” will be officially held in Torino after French-speaking song “Toukassé” won.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There are some ETSC returnee… If I’m not mistaken, songs are (or at least partially) in English (20), Russian (3), Arabic (2), Romanian (2), Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Macedonian, Polish, Slovakian, Slovenian, Spanish, Tamasheq, Turkish and Yakut!

Tonight’s show will be hosted by Mariano di Vaio (actor), Miguel Gobbo Diaz (actor) and Vanessa Hessler (model) at the Teatro Regio in Torino!

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Tut-Tut! Here’s a surprise on stage! The fiat that will bring the flags for all participating countries:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at noon (time of Paris)! You can vote until Wednesday 22nd at midnight! Results will be revealed in the following weekend! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. Oh God,no!

  2. I may be forgetting something but I don’t recognise any of these people :-p

  3. Oh no, I just realize that I lost already one artist… hopefully, the HoD chose at least the song I had in mind… and I’m a little scared about two other artists as well…🙈

  4. I think the norwegian artist is Tamta?

  5. Sorry if I’ve missed this in the comments…what time is this starting at?

  6. Off topic on an exciting day but I had to say it : What a truly sad decision from the Turkish regime about Hagia Sofia. Not that I am religious in any way or manner but using world Heritage monuments to advance a nationalistic agenda truly reminds me of ISIS practices :(

    • What pathetic little men (and some women) all those populist leaders are … History won’t be nice to them, but the damage has already been done. :(

    • They are masters of agenda changing… he knows his days are numbered and wants to do someting radical to gain votes. A few weeks ago he himself was saying people were not even filling the opposite mosque so turning a museum into a mosque was pointless yet he changed his mind again and made it our 12345678910th mosque 🙄

    • I dont know whether to agree or not, but even the bigger masjid nearby is barely full

  7. I am off to the meeting now. GRRR
Enjoy the night and good luck to everyone. I’ll check some comments once I am back home. :)

  8. Pfew, there isn’t any artist that I considered in the lineup, yay! :D
I do recognize some of them, but no more than 4 or 5 at the moment.

  9. I recognise four artists/groups from the line-up, excluding my own country’s entry, one of which I believe has participated and won a TV-talent singing show? This will be an exciting edition, from the line-up I can’t spot any of the artists I had in mind so fingers crossed!!

I will be busy making dinner with the parents and re-decorating the house, so will see how much of the reveal evening I can follow with everyone. Really nice to hear that there will be a large number of songs singing in their native languages as well! :)

      • Nope, I have been painting most of the rooms though to brighten the place up. Also searching for new furniture for the parents’ place, with most things in desperate need of some updating :D

    • what if a country doesn’t sing in either English nor a native language? ;)

    • Hey Ovi! Nice to see you back! :)

      • Hi Razvan, thank you very much! It’s good to be back and seeing all you guys enjoy the contest, it’s been a while. How are you doing, been coping alright with the pandemic?

        • Cool! After all ETSC is the biggest event in our bubble! :D I am ok, doing my best to stay safe, although here the pandemic is getting worse each day…

          • It is indeed, and something to look forward to! That’s so sad to hear, it does feel like the UK has opened up society too quickly. Those pictures of idiots going down to the beaches 2 weeks ago with the sunshine, in droves, is just horrifying :(

            • Same happened here, we opened up too soon and now many people don’t respect the social distancing rules, as if like the virus vanished all of a sudden, idiots indeed!

            • It’s weird. My parents live opposite a popular pub and except for a glass screen and one-way system, it’s like things are back to normal. Still avoiding them and rather be safe here than sorry. Let’s pray things get better in the near future!

            • Yeah, same here. I try to stay as safe as possible, I only go out if absolutely necessary, I’ve been watching so many movies and tv shows lately. :p

            • I still got a lot of Netflix movies and tv programmes to catch up on, but have been watching the entire season of Queer Eye in 2 days…. SO ADDICTIVE!

Helps when you got Antoni to show you how to make some great recipes:

            • From Netflix I can recommend Sex Education (in case you haven’t seen it), one of the best tv series I’ve seen lately. And a great film I’ve seen earlier today and would definitely recommend is Palm Springs (it was realeased 3 days ago on Hulu), it’s so much fun, best comedy of the year so far! :)

            • I have seen the trailer for this a few times, but not had time to start watching it yet! Will have a look into it, as I think S2 is already on there? Not heard of Palm Springs, but like a comedy so will watch that for sure. Thanks for the tips Razvan! x

            • You’re welcome! :) Both seasons of Sex Education are out on Netflix.

            • Brilliant, once I have more points sorted out I shall start watching S1 :)

            • Hmm… I binged “Love, Victor” and it was so cute!

            • Not watched that one yet, but I love Victor as well :P

I know it’s meant to be like a follow-up or equivalent to ‘Love, Simon’ but I do prefer the latter one for its creative scenes and storyline from the start. Still, not complaining watching a coming-out movie with cute guys so!

            • it’s a series based on “Love, Simon” that answers the main issue people had with the film: Simon is white, riche and from a very understanding family. What if the same thing happened to a latino kid from a not so wealthy background? And it’s a series so it takes its time with the characters’ feelings ;)

              and hotties all around :p

            • That’s a good point, and I think that in a way that this movie will be more “fitting” to a lot of people from a non-white, rich family etc. I like to think that all barista boys look like Benji here in London but alas!

            • The one at my local starbucks is gorgeous with an amazing ass. His name is Clement :)

            • Interesting, the French ones are more cute and interested it seems then. You tried to chat him up picking up a latte or? ;)

Might have to up the standards here in London and recruit myself to the nearest vegan, millennial, ethical indie cafe. Always wanted to try my hands on making proper coffee one day

            • I take Hazelnut latte please!

            • Yummy! Pumpkin Spice Latte when autumn arrives as well

            • Yes and gingerbread for Xmas lol

    • Hm. I guess you are right about that talent show artist. I guess I might recognise it in bigger photo.

  10. The full size picture is now available :o

  11. Btw, Vanessa is a great choice as one of the host, well done Dino! :D

  12. Year ago my boys took ET community by the storm like never seen before. Let’s see if there’s a gob smacking 200+ entry in the line up tonight that will make so unbelievably many of our hearts beat faster.

    Thank you, once again.

    And good luck!

Yeah, this is pretty awesome, isn’t it?

  13. Viewing the big poster from phone 📱 enables zooming so I examined that in the morning and I don’t think any of my August choices are taken. At this point I recognise only two artists: 🇱🇹 🇨🇾

  14. I’m pretty sure I knew the Swedish singer, but I don’t remember her name.

  15. I would be surprised if I knew anything but mine.

  16. 4 songs in Russian?!
On the other hand, only one in Greek :)

  17. I am reaaaaaadyyyyyyy

  18. Dawaj, ETSC 13! Let’s get this thing started!

  19. 10m delay. We are in Italy after all :p

  20. TikTok we’re about to start! who cares who wins the crown? there’s only one throne, and guess who sits on it

  21. Hm… seems we heading for the fourth time in a row Italian won’t be heard from Italy

  22. Worthy winner last time. :)

  23. Live from Poland btw
