ETSC 12: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Wednesday night, 8PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 11 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. Last year, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! This July, Sweden just won for the first time with Junior Brielle‘s “Love. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A specific article for Top 10 stats was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 12 – August 2019” will be officially held in Stockholm.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 42 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

There’s at least one ETSC returnee… Songs are (or at least partially) in English, Arabic, Russian, Albanian, Armenian, Croatian, Estonian, French, Georgian, Greek, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian… Also 20 acts are groups, duets or “featuring” with 22 solo artists!

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at midnight (time of Paris)! You can vote until Sunday 25th at midnight! Results will be revealed in the last week of August! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. If someone is intrested in the lyrics of “Im haverjutyun ” it is female declaration of love. Tbh the Armenian lyrics are masterpieces and it is hard to translate them correctly. Just chorus:

Earth and skies smile to me
When they read your name in my heart .
When you were touching my hairs
My body got paralyzed like stone and I felt myself reborn again
You were the peace I found
    You’re my silence, my wiseness
    You’re my beginning, my end.
    …..

  2. So I sat down a long time last night making a final top 10, listening to it multiple times to make sure I was happy with it. I believe I’ve finally made a list I’m satisfied with. As such, my votes have been sent.

I must say my douze surprised me, but maybe that’s to be expected in an edition that is very consistent in terms of style and likability, without anything that I would consider outstanding. Let me be clear, though, that I do like all my top 10, and even beyond. Regardless, congratulations to whomever it was that received my votes and good luck to all! :)

  3. Anonymous shoutout to my guilty pleasure song of this edition. I would never give it points based on merit but it is stuck in my head for days now and I kinda hate myself for it :-p

  4. 🇸🇪 Calling all HoDs! What would you like to ask Christer Björkman, long time silent reader of ET and most likely annihilator of ET’s press passes, face to face? What are your wishes for him, besides your ultimate wish him choking on his morning cinamon bun?

Now it’s your chance. Tomorrow we are heading to wolf’s mouth, SVT’s HQ, to meet MF team over lunch.

Hejsan killar! Så trevligt att se ni alla här hos oss! Tyvärt pratar jag bars svenska, men Hjallis kan översätta.

Not too fancy! As all the money for new HQ has gone to MF stagings and bribing juries, they have to stay in this tribute to Soviet constructivism.

Special gem for Donnie in the team, even though maybe a bit too natural looking for him!

    • Let’s play a game of uncomfortable questions:

#1: When is Sweden going to send a song in its native language again?

#2: When are you going to kick out the kangaroos?

      • Honestly, as a Swede, I really would love for us to send a song in Swedish again. Of course, it also has to be worthy of winning, and usually the songs-in-Swedish quota is filled with entries that have no chance at doing well, because *WHAT* would the world do if didn’t send something entirely international???

Seriously, the only only song that has represented Sweden since the language rule was dropped is “La Voix” and the last time a song in Swedish won was in 2006. And that – along with several before it – was translated to English in time for ESC.

Add to that the lack of genre diversity we have in our national selection, particularly the last 5-7 years or so. We have one of the largest music industries in the world and over 2,000 submissions per year. Surely there must be room for more than one half-hearted rock song, some country tune and one or two songs with ethnic influences year in and year out. I may not listen to all these genres myself, but it would be nice to show a different side of our nation’s music than just slick pop sung by young men.

None of this will change until new people are in charge of MF who have a different view of the contest than simply filling a set of criteria each year when making the selection. Let the songs have some soul and passion! (And yes, even schlager and pop can have this.) Unfortunately, as Björkman has already hand-picked his successor for “understanding what the competition is about,” none of this will come to fruition anytime in the near future :(

        • *what would the world do if we didn’t send

*the only song that has repsented Sweden not entirely in English since the language rule was dropped is “La Voix”

        • I feel your frustration. I agree with you: Just because a song’s performed in Swedish it doesn’t have to be the winning song automatically. It needs to stand out and earn the victory. Sweden’s had chances in the past with Caroline af Ugglas or Timoteij, but ultimately didn’t get to win.
I can’t enjoy watching the Mello anymore as it has become very predictable – song and result wise. The comedy parts are gold I’ll give them that. Sweden loves the contest and I wish other countries would show some effort (looking at the UK).

          • I really loved mello in the past as well. I still watch it, as it’s almost a national sport, but the charm really is gone. It’s been very mechanical the past few years especially. Both my mom and I were considering if we should watch some other country’s selection next year instead, but we’ll see what happens.

            I still listen to Timoteij’s entry <3

            • Poland’s national sport is picking mushrooms…

Hungary has always had a diverse line-up., but they need to ditch these juries. Slovenia surprised this year with a very strong NF oh and of course Italy’s Sanremo is musical entertainment overdose as usual.

With “Kom” Sweden would’ve never been stuck in the semi 😉

            • I actually don’t follow any national finals besides Sweden’s because I want to get to know the ESC acts in context of one another. It also helps me from feeling depressed when the “wrong” song wins. ;) That being said, I usually go back and check out a little bit afterwards.

There were several good options in 2010. My favorite was Salem al Fakir, whom I suspect would have done the best of all the acts, but Timoteij and Eric Saade would also have been great choices. :) (Of course, Eric came back with a vengeance the following year, albeit with a song of equally bad lyrics, lol)

            • You have a point there when you say it keeps you from feeling depressed when the “wrong” song wins. That happened to me a dozen times and it’s part of the season just like post Eurovision depression afterwards.
Keep On Walking would’ve been an interesting entry for Oslo ’10. His voice is very unique as I remember. Is he still releasing music? Eric Saade’s music is not my thing, but he would’ve done well, agreed.

            • I haven’t kept up with al Fakir since, but last I know of, he is part of a producer duo Vargas & Lagola who released the song “Tough Love” with Agnes and Avicii posthumously earlier this year. That’s all I know of his career.

  5. Hello guys. I’m a bit late to the party as I’ve been on vacay and just returned the other day. I haven’t listened to the songs yet, but I’ll check them out for sure.
I really love these postcards, they give me an 80s ”Dansa i neon” vibe 😄
    Good luck, everyone!

  6. OFFICIAL PROMOTION OF… AUSTRIA!

For ETSC-regulars, the Austrian DJ Marcus Füreder aka Parov Stelar is a familiar name since he has been entered by Michos in No. 5 with his side project Stelartronic (plus he had also been in VFoS). In 2019, he’s back with his new single. “Gringo” is a piece of what Parov’s been known for best: Electro swing. Some even call him the king of Electro swing. The video of “Gringo” consists of more than 1.600 frames, all outlined and coloured by Parov himself. Below, you can enjoy a short making of video. I hope you estimate the song as a valuable contribution to the Contest and give him a place in your heart (and maybe your Top10 ?).

  7. OFFICIAL PROMOTION OF… ALBANIA!

Hello all spectators / Te dashur spektatoret!

Welcome to all of you have joined us on this wonderful day here at Tirana International Hotel, to witness the marriage of our dear friends Bes Kallaku and Xhensila Myrtezaj. I am so happy for these two, and I know all of you are as well. For those of you visiting Albania for the first time, welcome, and I hope you are ready to be up all night dancing, because there’s nothing better than an Albanian wedding. Now for a bit behind our two lovebirds; Bes Kallaku is a Tirana triple threat, comedian, singer, and footballer. He is joined by his best man Klajdi Haruni, the man from Korce behind many big hits in the Balkans. Our wonderful bride is Xhensila Myrtezaj, a fantastic singer known for her songs “Lulet mbledh per henen” (a personal favourite of mine) and “Celsin e Zemres”.

Over the last couple of days, Bes has kept saying to “Ma vodhe zemren”, which for those of you here not fluent in Albanian, means “You stole my heart”. That’s how he feels about Xhensila and he’ll express that to anyone he sees. She is his “Skifterja Ime”, or “My Falcon”. Now, it is time for sing, dance, and party all night!

  8. When I first listened to the line-up I thought that it was not a very strong edition, but many songs have grown hugely on me since then. Especially the one that got my 7 pts.

  9. Last month when I visited Athens I got my rucksack stolen. I had my mp3 device with all my music archives in it (eurovision, ETSC, FdlC, VFoS, soundtracks, classical, Greek). The worst part is that I don’t have any back-up to all those (more than 1000 songs). I don’t think I’l be able to make that playlist ever again…

    • My new iPhone was stolen 5-6 years ago in Bangkok. I was with my mom and all our travel plans were in it… It was the worst feeling. We did not go to Police because we were afraid of Thai Police would keep us longer (as there were some foreigners going to the Police for stolen items to get money from insuarance at home when in fact nothing was stolen from them) The positive thing is because I had a back up, I got all the things back!

        • I have an iphone myself. Kinda hate it :P Not user friendly at all. Or, most probably, I don’t know how to use it properly. Especially the fact that you can store music archives in it only through icloud is totally hateful to me.

          • Hmmm I had 2 iPhones and because of the economics I had to downgrade myself to Huawei 😒I dont like Android.. IPhone is the best phone for me… Very stable but the new one costs a fortune and our lovely government puts a huuuuge tax on the ones bought from abroad😠

            • They are so desperate that we are also paying money to leave the country.. Soooo friggin ridiculous

            • I can’t afford that😜 But my mom’s mom can get a citizenship from Bulgaria… They are just too lazy to do it.. Maybe because visa has never been an issue for them as my both parents have special passports and they have zero interest living abroad

            • I think we cant apply for greek ones as both my dad’s parents passed away. I am not sure about Greece on citizenship.. Most ppl apply for Bulgarian one here

            • Yes! But we learned last year that my grandmother was born in Vojvodina then her parents moved to Greece. My grandfather was born in Thessaloniki.
My mother’s side on the other hand are from Albania/N. Macedonia and Bulgaria…
In Turkey we consider dad’s family as our main start point and when they ask “where are you from originally” we say Thessaloniki🤗💞

            • “we consider dad’s family as our main start point”

              Patriarchic attitude! :D

        • I’m thinking of switching from iphone as well; inertia has kept me from it so far but it’s gotten to the point where I feel it’s 3 times as expensive as anything else but starts having problems after 1.5 years. How easy was it to switch all your stuff (contacts, music, photos) to Huawei?

          • My contacts are on my phone sim card so I had no problem but there are a lot of ways I guess to transfer from iPhone to Android phones and vice-versa…Pictures and music can be transfered to computer then onto target device… I only keep new stuff on my phone and transfer them to storage from time to time

            • Great thx! My contract’s running out soon so it seems like a good time to check out alternatives because frankly iphone seems to get less satisfying with rising price and I’m not one of those apple-fetishists.

            • I also find prices ridiculous but they all give amazing experience and simplify life if used properly

            • I mainly just surf, message, take photos and listen to music – would you say there’s a big difference to Huawei in quality? I’ve also gotten increasingly frustrated with iphone’s battery life and the screen not being as responsive as it should be any more after less than 2 years.

            • The 2 things I hate about IPhone was their sloppy charger and not letting you download stuff from the net. These 2 work better on Huawei.Depending on the model I think there is not much diffefence on quality maybe Huawei is better in pictures . It is the biggest competitor to iPhone so they are trying to stop it by putting sanctions 😉

            • Thx cool yes the being unable to download (while also only being able to sync limited types of files) is also a major frustration for me with iphone.

    • That sounds really bad. :( I have two or three back ups for everything that is important to me. One copy of my music archive (together with my travel diaries and some other things) even is in safe deposit box of my local bank. It’s updated once every 3 months.

    • What a nightmare so sorry to hear this. I never got into downloads properly, I was so worried about back ups, so I basically jumped from CD’s to Spotify the moment they started, or actually before as I was amongst the pilot users. Highly reccomendable. I have brought records all my life extensively, both vinyls and CD’s. I finally got my own record store with everything stocked into it. Heaven’s gates opened!

            • Dizzy Mizz Lizzy was a Danish rock band from the 1990’s who of course took its name from the song off the Help! album. They were the most popular rock band between 1994 and 1997 approximately, and they had great success with songs like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh0jC04LGxk

Their debut album from 1994 is the best selling debut of all time in Denmark. Personally I think they are OK, but there is not much edge. Also they sounded like they could only make one type of song, and lead singer Tim Christensen pretty much stuck to doing this after going solo.

They were btw. part of the so-called “green wave” of Danish rock bands that broke through around 1993-94, the others including Kashmir, Psyched Up Janis, Inside the Whale and a few others. All these bands were still hugely popular when I was at bording school in 1998-99. They all sang in English (except Inside the Whale later changed to Danish) and had very little connection with Danish 70’s and 80’s bands. Inspiration mostly came from grunge, Led Zeppelin and in for some bands the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers (and in the case of Dizzy Mizz Lizzy: the Beatles). Kashmir proved to be the most artistically successful band off the green wave, especially on albums like The Good Life (1999) and Zitilites (2003).

            • I know Tim Christensen because of his tribute to RAM, I have the album, have you heard of it? It’s a live album, performing all the songs from Ram. And they sound really great! I didn’t know he had a band called Dizzy Miss Lizzy, but I guess it all makes sense… ehehe

            • I have only heard Ram a few times. I really like the album, but I am only beginning to examine their solo careers more. I knew John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, All Things Must Pass and Band On the Run in advance.

            • A lot of work ahead of you… No albums from Ringo? Try Ringo, it’s the closest thing we have to the Beatles working together again, tho they worked separately… Hope you find some great songs! Let me know 😊

  10. Just getting set to head back to France after a trip to Ireland to perform at a wedding in Kerry. It went very well.
This popped up on my feed.
I wonder was this a younger Hjallis back in the 80s, strutting his stuff and shaking his thang!

Hope you are all.enjoying the edition. Haven’t had a chance to listen to any of the songs. Hopefully when I get back.
Cannot wait to be back in my man’s arms again.
    Oh l’amour! ❤️

      • Love it! <3
Love Erasure. Seen them a few times. Met Andy too on the scene. Their costumes were often made by a mate of mine, Dean Bright.
        Merci mon ami :)

        • I knew you would love it, and I love Erasure too! Talk about great pop sensibilities. So shame their huge contribution to electro pop is a bit underrated. More hipster electricians should take notes not only in song writing, bit also how to bring soul in sharpest crystal clear electro.
So glad to hear about your connections to group, which of course didn’t surprise me at all. I’m just waiting for your big memoir from your wild London years! Maybe when Scarlet finally retires? 😘
