ETSC 11 – Prediction Game

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! 41 of you entered for the July 2019 edition and the results are coming soon!

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 41 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. You can click on the picture below to listen to the songs again:

These songs were presented by the following HoDs, in alphabetical order: Anders, Arpatilaos, Avat, Bay, Caolán, Cathal, Cyphermusic, Daniel, Dimitris, Dino, Dominik, Donnie, Donnyademaj, Franco, Greg, Gregor, Hjallis, Jerry, Lina, Luke, Martin, 8Mark8, Matthew, Mermaid, Michos, Mylor, Oasisoffear, Ovidarch, Pablo, Patrick P, PJ, Razvan, Ren Robles, Sekhmet Morgan, Sheldon, Shevek, Stommie, Tehoe, Togravus, Trekks, and Zainab!

Results will come in shortly. In the meantime, we get to gossip and predict, and discuss songs more openly as nothing more is at stake. And I drop hints!

Now time for the prediction game! It was first started in ETSC 4 “hint” article and back then I wrote this: “We can play a guessing game, people wishing to participate can post a “prediction” top 10 and I’ll award points based on the countries that are in the actual top 10 and predicted in yours accorddingly. I wont reveal the results until after the voting and winner is announced, but we’d get an extra side bet to care about ;)” In the end, it has secured itself has an ETSC standard: former winnets were Donnie (ETSC 4),  Nick P (ETSC 5), Donnie (ETSC 6), Dimitris (ETSC 7), Gregor (ETSC 8), Razvan (ETSC 9) and Razvan (ETSC 10)!

Let’s do it again. Until the reveal begin, you can put a top 10 prediction in order (since most people predict the same 8 or so songs, it would be better to have an order so that thanks to mathematics, we do get someone who was “closer” to the final results). However, there are a few specific rules:

  • There is an extra 100pts if you guess ALL 10 songs right whatever the order!
  • There is an extra 100pts if you guess AT LEAST 10 HoD right!

For the first time ever, in ETSC 10, Razvan got more than 10 HoD right and won the extra points to push him to the Prediction King title! I’ll award points accordingly and announce the winner along with the revealing of ETSC 12 logo! If you feel like revealing predictions on the comment section is too much info, you can do it by email. However, as voting is closed, you dont need to worry affecting votes, just maybe people’s interpretation of your predictions (but we’re all esc fans and know predictions aren’t our own rankings!) This is a second crown to grab, good luck everyone!

  1. Don’t know if I should ask that question at all, but I am genuinely curious: the hype about Sweden, is it mostly because of the song, or is it more because people think the singers are hot?

    • Speaking for myself, I think it will do well because of the style of the song, it’s retro-electro pop and the winner of ETSC 9 was very similar. I would say the look of the singers have nothing to do with the voting…

    • *looks at their pics*

      I mean, I don’t think they’re that hot tbh.

    • 😀Because of the video and their hair cut I could not decide if they are hot or not 😀
Besides only few among 40+mentioned them, so…

    • They definitely don’t look “hot” to me. But I did think it sounds quite similar to the ETSC9 winner. There are other ’80s-sounding songs in the line-up (France f.e.)

      • It’s interesting that there are so many people here who like 80’s-style sounds.

Not that I never listen to music from the 80’s, but we’re mostly speaking of bands that are somehow coloured by punk and new wave, some alternative rock, and a few other things (some notable Danish musicians had an artistic peak in the 80’s: Gnags, Sebastian, Tv-2).

        • 80s music is my favorite💜So many gems

          • You know, the kind of storytelling I grew up with was very much that of the 80’s as the decade of the kitsch and over-the-top, and then in 1991 came Nirvana and saved us all from hair metal and Michael Jackson. It’s of course a caricature because things are much more complex, but still, most of the music I listen to is from the 60’s, 70’s and 90’s. Plus of course I discover great music of today as well, but I very rarely find in the mainstream.

        • Speaking for myself it has to do with it being the decade I discovered music altogether as my first teenage years were in the late 80s. I don’t know if it’s merely nostalgia or it has to do with taste being shaped by those formative years. But I do think that a lot of the music from that period like post-punk, new wave, the first skirtings of electro with Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode etc. will always appeal to me. The swiss ETSC winner could have been a very good Depeche Mode song for example :)

          • I really like Kraftwerk, but I think their most prominent work is from the 70’s. Depeche Mode has never been me, but if we are to take electronic sounds from the 80’s, I’d pick something like Eurythmics.

            • Eurythmics, the Cure, Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, U2, Pretenders, Pet shop boys, Cocteau Twins… So many great artists from that period but almost all came from Britain or continental Europe. The Michael Jackson to Nirvana narrative is quite “american”. Personally I never cared for either :)

            • I adore Nirvana, but then I grew up with it.

As for the others I like U2 though Bono annoys me a bit. I’m not really into Kate Bush and the Cure. Favourite 80’s bands include Talking Heads, the Clash, Police, R.E.M., plus I love an album like Paul Simon’s Graceland.

            • I have allEurythmics and Depeche Mode cds I bought when I wzs younger and that cds were a thing ahah

          • I do think a LOT of us have a similar generation and taste (we’re all esc fans and MOST if us come from Western European countries)

      • I tried to make notes on each song (partly to remind me of what they sounded like, but it also sort of helped me figure out what to predict, even if they turn out terribly wrong lol) and you’re right, there IS a lot of ’80s synth in this edition.

Rufus was right, he was maybe just a decade and a half too early. ;-)

    • It’s because of the trousers :)

    • I don’t get it either.

    • To be complètely honnest I think ET male taste is very much more towards a singer like the Irish one. Bigger, darker hair, hairier… here lots of people like “manly” guys and Im almost alone in liking twinks (with Lina who isnt gay). Don’t forget the straights like Razvan, you or Donnie too. Razvan told me his favorite looking girl is the British one and Donnie has to have the hots for the Latvian one ahah

  7. @PJ Apparently Brian and Paul have a love child (how cool is that?) that emerged today. His name is Francis Lung, and his A Dream is U chamber pop album is classy 5/5 ear pleaser. Go buy or steal it now, you will love it!

  8. Just experienced another earthquake here in Jakarta…

    #Gempa Mag:7.4, 02-Aug-19 19:03:21 WIB, Lok:7.54 LS,104.58 BT (147 km BaratDaya SUMUR-BANTEN), Kedalaman:10 Km, Potensi tsunami utk dtrskn pd msyrkt #BMKG
