ETSC 11: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 9 PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 10 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. Last year, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! The last edition to date was won by Germany’s Elif Demirezer with “Doppelleben. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A 10th Anniversary article was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 11 – July 2019” will be officially held in Berlin.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 41 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

One ETSC returnee, one esc artist who goes solo… Songs are in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, French, Serbian, German, Finish, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, Turkish, Azerbaijani, Montenegrin, Flemish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Greek..

People are starting to gather at the Brandenburg Gate, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Here are the host for tonight’s show: Miss Gayle Tufts.

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at midnight (time of Paris)! You can vote until wednesday 31st at midnight! Results will be revealed at the end of the week, probably on Friday! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. I feel like I am at an advantage being multi-lingual as I can understand the meaning of the songs better than everyone else. My German is a little rusty, but I am getting so much from the German song that others will not.

  2. To make it easier, here are stills from the videos where a hummingbird and a sheep appear.

    Can’t beleive the Hods from these 2 countries haven’t spot those animals there… ;)
    So what countries are #6 and #10?

  3. @Sheldon:
    the only rules available are those you can read in the page… I invented rule #31, etc… it doesn’t exist… Sorry if I made you beleive in it :)
    As for the extra points, usually Morgan says he will give those to the Hod who:
    1) guesses all the countries the other Hods are representing;
    2) predicts the complete Top10…

    I think it’s more or less like that, but, as you can imagine, nobody ever got those extras :)

  4. Country trivia time!

    Longest sequence of top3 placings: France – ETSC1 to ETSC7;

    Longest sequence of top10 placings: Israel – ETSC to ETSC9;

    Longest running sequence of top10 placings: Finland – since ETSC;

    Most last places: Sweden – ETSC6 and ETSC10;

      • Am very well PJ.
        Exceedingly happy with life atm. Love is indeed a many splendored thing!! Am enjoying work since leaving the bar. The apartments are much better and am getting great reviews. I may be taking on more later on but will need to get myself mobile. Buses are fine here but if I need to be in Monaco or Antibes then it would require a more quick and personal mode of transport. Still, something to work on.
        Weather is lovely and suits me very much.
        Philippe is amazing and makes me very happy indeed. Yes, all is going well thank goodness.
        Hope it is going good for you too. :)

  5. Less than 10 votes to go…

    However do understand that if results are Friday night it means doing 4 to 6h of result postcards DURING my holidays… and I wont use that boring scorewizz else etsc would lose its charm, no?

  6. At the end of the first night of the second debate, Bernie and Warren were the clear winners and mopped the floor with all the moderates who tried to attack them. Williamson had a very surprisingly strong performance as well after the spectacle that was her first debate, and I think she may hang around longer than we expected. Everyone else should drop out imminently.

  7. Time for some voting hints :

    1. Songs from each third of the running order got points from our delegation (3-3-4)
    2. Back to back hits X 2
    3. Female/Male vocals in total harmony ! (50%-50%)

    Who could have knowned ? :P

  8. One of the Broadway’s and West End’s greatest directors and producers, Hal Prince dies at 91. He’s most celebrated works includes Kander Ebb’s Cabaret; Stephen Sondheim’s Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures; and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita and Phantom of the Opera. He famously turned down Lloyd Webber’s Cats. Hal Prince was the inspiration for John Lithgow’s character in Bob Fosse’s film All That Jazz.
    Hat off. R.I.P

  9. Listening … :)

    a) … totally chill because I am not in this time?

    or

    b) … in utter panic because my points aren’t in yet?
