ETSC 11: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Discover the songs this Friday night, 9 PM CET!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 10 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. Last year, German-speaking countries got their revenge as Switzerland won ETSC 9 and Germany won ETSC 10! The last edition to date was won by Germany’s Elif Demirezer with “Doppelleben. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. A 10th Anniversary article was also open here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 11 – July 2019” will be officially held in Berlin.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 41 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

One ETSC returnee, one esc artist who goes solo… Songs are in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, French, Serbian, German, Finish, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, Turkish, Azerbaijani, Montenegrin, Flemish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Greek..

People are starting to gather at the Brandenburg Gate, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Here are the host for tonight’s show: Miss Gayle Tufts.

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Rules: the voting will open tomorrow at midnight (time of Paris)! You can vote until wednesday 31st at midnight! Results will be revealed at the end of the week, probably on Friday! In order to do promotion, you need to email me all materials you want to post (including lyrics translation). Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. This is what I’ll be watching while listening to the songs next week!

  2. I’ve finished listening now. What a journey. Clap clap 😏

Tomorrow I’ll start the second run and think of potential candidates for my points. Good luck and good night!

  3. Thank god we had again one night only! For me this is the biggest high light of ET calendar along with San Remo week!

    • 2 of the highlights for sure. But I also very much enjoy chatting through all the NFs. ESC night itself isn’t such a big deal for me because I am always at my parent’s party and don’t arrive here before 3 am, a time at which most other regulars are already in bed.

  4. I’m off to bed, I have a long day tomorrow. Good night.

  5. See you all tomorrow!

  6. It’s been a really entertaining and varied edition. Uppers, downers and candy corn :)

    Good night, all!

  7. Can’t play Denmark…

  8. Wow… i knew 8 artists

  9. lol

  10. Song-wise, I know two of them..

    (Can i just mention them?)

  11. Finally listened to all of the songs, and there’s definitely a certain style that I’m preferring over the others. A lot of the videos were geoblocked here but I still managed to find other versions of all of them. Should be a fun competition.

  12. I managed to listen from song N°1 to N°20 tonight. Thanks for sharing music!

  13. After all I recognise 11 artists and 3 songs.

  14. 16 known artists
    5 songs

  15. After second listening strong favourites arising from different prefered genres of mine. Seriously good stuff here!

  16. Here is the playlist. When it comes to geoblocked stuff, I hope people find the songs elsewhere. I encountered no such problem with any of the songs.

  17. HoDs revealing who they are…

  18. 41 songs on ipod and listening to them whilst off to the east end of Cyprus. Luckily I do not have to drive :) As first impression this is my least favourite edition but still there are some cool stuff on offer. Let’s see whether I change my mind today.

  19. One song has been participated in VFoS, is it allowed?

    • Oh so you guys have talked about it… It finished 9th back then via Serbia, because she is Kosovar

    • Morgan doesn’t mind that :)

      • He does. There is a rule that prevents you from bringing FdlC and VFoS entries. I think the confusion starts because the song in the VFoS archive is listed in the Serbian section, not in the Albanian.

        • I thought he didn’t care about that…

          • You don’t read the rules PJ ? ;) What if someone checks the archive picks a winning song from there and brings it to ETSC. Does this sound OK?

            • I didn’t read the rules, because I always check the artists participating before… :)

            • Also, in every signing up article, he wrote “discover new songs”, and from what I learned long ago, FdLC/VFOS are ETSC sisters because most of the players play in both contests.

Anyway, it is up to Morgan about this particular case, as it is up to me when it comes to my voting

            • The later involved I guess is someone unaware of VFoS perhaps. The rules for some reason do not mention VFoS (I guess that section has not been updated) hence the confusion.

            • Morgan said he didn’t check the VFoS archive. I will send it to him and from now on we will be reminding people in the comments as well during the registration period.

There may be issues of fairness because we know how many points some participants gave to the song (even though no-one knows how they will react to a known song in another line-up). It’s also not fair to the HoD that a large segment of voters are already familiar with his/her song.

        • I remember he minds about resending VFOS/FdLC entry but I can not recall when.

        • I suggest making a complete list of VFOS/FDLC songs in one single page so Morgan can just use Ctrl+F during verification process.

That’s what I did in my contest: bit.ly/ALCHistory

          • That’s a hell of a job especially putting the FdlC songs together :)

          • Dino has already done that for VFoS as you know, and we also have a page with links to all the FdlC archives.

            • Oh yeah i’ve seen that..

            • He means one single page though listing all songs. You can use ctrl+F to find what you want. For example a specific word.

            • Yeah, including FdlC in the archive would be huge work and we are not responsible if there wasn’t a comprehensive archive back then. We can start building it but it will be slow and painstaking work.

Besides, FdlC was discontinued two years ago already. In the context of ETSC where only songs from the past 5 years can participate, it’s becoming less and less likely there will be overlap as the years go by.

  20. Hello there!
My name’s Mark. Always reading comments and articles. But now for the first time participating in an active way. My first ETSC. Exciting.

Let me say that I always enjoy the good, friendly diccusions. Love ESC and nice to see I am not the only one in this crazy world :-)

First task: listen to alle songs. For the snippets I’ve heard: good quality!

  21. I’ll favor songs with clips showing the sea! Just saying…

  22. Whoever picked Albanian song probably did not know it was represented before…There are dozens of online contests… I myself could not recognise it f.e
Lets not make ppl uncomfortable with these kind of talks, dont vote for it if you are bothered but do not make it public please.. We are here to have fun not to get stressed about our songs or artists!

    • This what I believe too. It was not done on purpose me thinks so it should in the lineup and treat like all the rest songs.

    • Agreed and signed. FdlC and VFoS should be irrelevant when it comes to ETSC imo. You can’t expect every HoD to check thousands of songs. I never do that.

      • VFoS has an alphabetical archive of all countries so it’s quite simple – nothing like FdlC. We will simply have to alert people in a better way in following editions. I blame myself for not doing it during the registration period. Since it happened, we will all treat the song as any other in the line-up.

        • I don’t agree and think that the FdlC/VFoS rule should be ditched because it is simply wrong. Why should anyone not participating in the spin-offs consider what was submitted there? Sorry, but that’s absurd imo.

          • Because as Dino rightfully said people may simply pick songs that did well there and bring them here, since a very large subset of people here vote there as well. That was the case when FdlC was in place, I don’t see what the difference is now. We simply picked from where they left off.

People have to check the already rather extensive ETSC archive to make sure not only that they won’t send a song that has been sent before but that they don’t even send an artist that has appeared before here (at least for the major countries). With VFoS there is an alphabetical archive which makes it rather easy.

            • There are hundreds of online contests out there. People could check those for successful songs too.

            • Not with the crowd overlapping so much though.

            • I still think that it complicates things unnecessarily, in particular for newcomers … but let’s agree to disagree on this point.

            • I was also a newcomer at some point. And I was like “what? there is another contest as well? these people are barking mad!”. Until I started participating and got hooked there as well :-P

      • You’re way too kind again. Clearly this is a nefarious plot by the HoD!There’s only one way to deal with this perfidity:

    • Sure…. I have my conclusion

    • Yes, I agree. We have some new people participating and they probably didn’t even hear of FdlC or VFoS (I didn’t know about FdlC either when I debuted in ETSC 4). I barely remembered it too as it participated a while ago, so I’ll treat it like all the other songs in the line-up. However if there would’ve been a former FdlC or VFoS winner that would’ve been more awkward and I think in the future we should make people more aware of FdlC/VFoS.

    • Maybe just informing Morgan about it would have been a better idea, but I didn’t mention it to stress the HoD, and I am sorry if I did.

I’m sure (s)he didn’t know about it, but I thought it would be most fair to let him/her know that it has been in a contest where a lot of people participate who also take part in ETSC. So it was done as a favour to the HoD who may – or may not – want to change it.

The thing is, since I already know the song, I can’t judge it on the same premises as the other songs, and I believe I am not the only one in that respect. It may be a misfortune for the chances of the song, I don’t know. That’s why I said it.

      • Don’t take it personal Anders..I know you are a sensitive and fair person and I get what you mean but nowthat the song has been accepted there is no need to talk more about it imo.Similiar situation happened to me in one of the earlier contests and I knew how It felt so I can put myself in the shoes of the person representing Albania.
This happened a lot of times before and because it is repeating again I wanted be vocal about it ,there are a lot of ppl doing it in different ways so it is not a single person thing.
I just wish ppl to be more careful while sending songs and writing comments about songs they already know🤗

    • Mermaid, the voice of reason :)

  23. Off topic….
I’m so waiting for the release of this movie and soundtrack…. Finaly they make a historical movie not about the same theme… soundtrack seems to be good material for online contest.

  24. I’m going to watch this ancient play tonight. I hope tehy did a good job:

    • Oedipus Rex by Markoulakis? I wanted to see the Robert Wilson staging at Epidaurus but unfortunately I couldn’t. I am not really sure I would trust Markoulakis with something like this (even though Wilson is more about the “wow” staging and less about the substance of any particular play).
