ET Awards 2019: Most Overrated!

Eurovision 2019 – This year we resume the “Eurovision Times Awards” to give prizes (the Fridas) for the best in every category! And you get to vote! Today, we resume the polls with the two categories focused on unfair results!

2019 will be the seventh year for Eurovision Times to organize a new contest (you can check 2013’s results here, the 2014’s ones here, the 2015’s ones here, the 2016’s ones here, the 2017’s ones here and the 2018’s ones here). As with the past few years, our blog hosts now three contests: TEKO which takes place before the contest and the “Eurovision Times Awards” after the contest, with “Premath/Aftermath” which compares our rankings before and after the contest. The principle of the ET Awards is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners. The winners recieve an imaginary trophee, entitled the Fridas in hommage to Frida Boccara, the French Eurovision winner in 1969 with “Un jour, un enfant“.

The fifteenth award is in the “Result” category and it’s “Most Overrated”. Former winners are: Azerbaijan (2013), Russia (2014), Russia (2015), Poland (2016), Australia (2017) and Austria (2018). Here are the results of the recommendations made by the regular users of Eurovision Times in this category:

  • 14 Russia
  • 13 Sweden
  • 10 North Macedonia
  • 7 Denmark
  • 7 San Marino
  • 5 Australia
  • 3 Estonia
  • 3 Norway
  • 2 Belarus
  • 2 Greece
  • 1 Azerbaijan
  • 1 Cyprus
  • 1 Czech Republic
  • 1 Hungary
  • 1 Iceland
  • 1 Netherlands
  • 1 Slovenia
  • 1 Switzerland

However, it’s down to the staff of Eurovision Times to choose the official nominees, including unpopular or controversial ones! But it’s up to you to vote in our poll below which entry was the most overrated this year! You need to click on the country’s name to be redirected to the video of the song. The nominees in alphabetical order are:

Rules: the polls will be open for a week. At the end of the week, an article will announce the winner of the category but not the detailed results. The full results will however be given to you once all polls are closed so that you don’t get influenced (we never know) in your following votes. Every IP gets only one vote, please do not cheat, do take in consideration to watch very careful to the props before voting and do not vote necessarily for your favorite song but vote regarding to the category. Of course, it’s pointless to vote only for your own country unless you’re really certain it should win. May the best win!

  1. I’m ok with Dk, it was a cute song, good live and was the Zoë of the year, so it got the same result, made sense… all other 4 made me roll my eyes in how high they got when Slovenia was 14th

  2. It’s clearly between Russia and San Marino but my vote goes to Lazarev – the analysis of the televoting score for Russia is scary and worrying for anyone who claims to care about this contest.

imo sweden has no place on this list but it will most likely win for all the well known reasons (unrelated to an objective analysis of the result).

    • Sweden has never won this Frida, Russia won it twice. Don’t twist facts please

    • ROFL. 3/4 of the Swedish televoting points come from Nordic and Baltic countries.

      • And that resulted to what ? A total of 93 points at the end. Lazarev started with a voting base of about 130+ points. The numerical differences are vast.

        • 130 + points for a very popular artist though. You can’t put the blame only on diaspora and you know that

          • How does that make it better ? If anything it only makes it worse for Russia given that this song sang by someone else would not get such a result.
Meanwhile Sweden, fighting the well recorded racial preferences televoting has shown over years (John is only the second man of colour to be featured in an esc televoting top 10 after EST01), did well with a less established artist who had one of the most arena-appropriate performances with the use of backing vocalists to create a mood.

I will say it again : its been a month but the biggest crime in the 2019 edition will always be how Switzerland was denied an overall top 3 it sought after a long time because of the televoting for Russia.

            • Rouvas did 5th in televoting for being popular in 2009 despite a very lame song and performance. It’s exactly the same (Sergey was 4th in televoting this year). You can’t ignore such factors when it comes to televoting (not that I necessarily agree or disagree). UK’s Blue were 5th if I recall correctly too. So it has nothing to do with diaspora as you chose to see it

  3. And les douze points go to …. Sweden… :) :(.

  4. All of North Macedonia, Russia and San Marino were overrated but the MOST overrated was North Macedonia which is probably the most incomprehensible jury winner ever.

  5. Denmark and San Marino …

  6. It’s not even a contest here imo – North Macedonia in a walk. I honestly am happy they returned to the Final after so many years, and Tamara was the best vocalist in the contest. But the juries having “Proud”, a song written like one of the first songs of a “Voice” winner, over songs like “Arcade” or “Soldi” will always dumbfound me. NED/ITA aren’t even my Top 2 but they were clearly the most contemporary and fresh songs of the year.

San Marino is 2nd for me here after one of the worst songs to qualify and finishing 10th in the tevote.

    1. North Macedonia
    2. San Marino
    3. Russia
    4. Sweden
    5. Denmark

  7. Well this was hard, as I think all five of these entries were very overrated + some of those not nominated. In the end I went for Sweden. I always knew it’d be a jury darling, but the difference between its placement in the end and my personal placement of it differed the greatest.

  8. Denmark : Such a stereotypical song with a lame gimmick. Neither a great performance (as NMK), nor a big artist (see Sergey) not even fun enough (see San Marino). It should have stayed in semis imo. I’m fed up with Danish entries all these years. They all sound the same!
My second pick would be Russia. I mean 3rd overall? With such lyrics?!!!

  9. My nominees were North Mac, Sweden and Norway and my vote will of course go to the big jury fanwank that was Proud.

  10. I won’t vote here, my hate is focused on the Belarusian entry :P

  11. All of them are but my vote went to the one who achieved the best result….Sweden.

  12. Clearly Russia which only got to 3rd because of avalanche of 12 points by televoting zombies in satellite states despite the fact this was a dated number with awful lyrics and little opportunity for him to show his charisma.

    • I just checked their televoting pts. Here’re their 12 pts:
      12 points
      Czech Republic
      San Marino

      • The Sammarinese televote, which is cobbled together by some intransparent alogithm, is a farce. I wish the EU simply ditched the Sammarinese televote. They could use 2 different juries instead, one professional jury and one teenager jury f. e.

  13. San Marino, clear vote for me here.
I don’t understand why Sweden is here, and also North Macedonia.
NMC was maybe a bit overrated by juries, but there were many many other examples of overrated song and performances, so I wouldn’t put them here neither.

IMO, other examples of overrated entries were:

Netherlands – winning the ESC (descent song, very good performance, would have clearly deserve TOP 5, but I don’t get all that hype in the media for weeks and months before the contest…)

Norway – winning the public vote (in fact, coming anywhere near TOP 10) – expected yes, but deserved – no
Malta – coming 10th with juries in the final
France – coming 16th in the final
Belarus – qualifying to the final
Denmark – qualfying to the final

And, out of all the categories, my personal over-overrated category goes as follows:

    1. Australia – for being allowed to participate
    2. Australia – for receiving every single juy vote in SF1 (121)
    3. Australia . for receiving every single televote in SF1 (140)
    4. Australia – for receiving every single juy vote in the final (153)
    5. Australia . for receiving every single televote in the final (131)

    I am bitter, I know… :-)))

    • I agree with you that Dutch song is good but the hype around it, considering many other solid entries, was a bit baffling. I find that among the ESC songs on my playlist this year, it’s the one I almost always skip (part of that may be due to my preference for uptempo esp, in sunny times but still a sign). I do wonder if, without the hype also in mainstream media, it would have won ahead of e.g. Soldi. Happy we’ll be going at last back to NL next year but it’s not the standout many make it out to be (with all respect to those who love it).

      • I haven’t seen many people claim that ‘Arcade’ was a standout winner and it would be a rather silly argument to make anyway. Duncan received 498 pts while Salvador was showered with 758 pts. There we have our standout winner. Even KK (aka the spoilt brat) got 615 pts.

Speaking of summer music, this lovely and slightly stoned summer ditty from the Maltese NF 2014 was playing while I was driving back home from a business meeting. The studio version is perfect to listen too while relaxing on a sunny meadow. Alas, the live was a bit meh.

        • A Maltese live was meh color me shocked lol… more concerning, my 84-year-old dad climbing a ladder with a power drill in 34 degrees, refusing help with “all the work”. Not tearing him off the ladder feels like supporting euthanasia :-(.

      • As if there wasn’t any hype around Soldi. Mahmood won the OGAE voting and in the mainstream media there was much more hype about the song of an immigrant who defied Salvini to sing for Italy in eurovision.
He got less points from both the juries and the tele voters then Duncan. And unlike the Italian and Russian juries, the Dutch jury didn’t downvote Duncan’s biggest threats.

        • Maybe the Anders or Shevek understand, but I completely had it with the so called fandom.

          • But why? It’s just different opinions. Lena got a lot of bad energy after her victory in 2010 too but I never let that spoil the fun. :)

        • You don’t have to get upset whenever someone says Arcade isn’t the greatest song ever.I realize you spent months contemplating the horror of not winning or even qualifying but it’s not an attack on you or the Netherlands to say it’s a good song but not necessarily universe-shattering for everyone else.

  14. I consider San Marino as protest voting or trolling.

  15. I agree with all 5. The most overrated of these 5 were North Macedonia, Russia and Sweden for me and it’s a close call, but I’ll vote for North Macedonia’s win with the juries.

  16. Well, probably not becoming very popular with this opinion in here, but North Macedonia winning the jury vote still remains a big mystery for me.
Of course, she is an exceptional singer and delivered rather outstandingly – although the dress was, well, just not my taste -, but the whole act shares IMO a category with acts like Lindita Halimi, Tamara Gachechiladze or Elhaida Dani.
An ordinarily female ballad, designed for showing a bit your vocal capacities. But none of them is a winning song. The televoting gave it a much more adequate placing… don’t know what the juries were thinking…

  17. […] and the firsth this evening! You can click to look at the full recommendations and nominations from last week’s article here! There were 74 recommendations for 18 countries in the first round and 100 votes were cast in an […]
