Eurovision 2019 Rehearsals: Day 3

Eurovision 2019 – With two weeks to go to the contest, daily rehearsals start this Saturday and of course the Eurovision Times will do its best to cover them; here’s for the first rehearsals to the first half of semifinal 1: pics and vids will be officially released and we get to discuss, debate, analyze, predict…

So this is how it’ll work for the next 10 days or so: we will resume the system from the last four years. There is an article for the day’s rehearsals published in the morning (or the night before) with the calendar (this year, tthe official site don’t seem to help look for rehearsals, so on this article you can see a recap). You can comment all day on it, based on all the info you can gather around and as soon as I can, I’ll get working on a recap article with links to pictures, videos, etc. However, I do work so I’ll do that at the latest in the evening, sooner if possible, depending. Usually, the girls are down there and as you know, this year the girls couldn’t make it to the Tel Aviv rehearsals.

So we’re all counting on you guys to post in the comment section all the links you find and discuss all material out there. Hope it works out great for everyone, and already a big cheers to all the sites who will post their own made materials.

Here’s tomorrow’s schedule: Semifinal 2 – Half 1 – First rehearsal

  1. 10:00-10:30 Armenia
  2. 10:40-11:10 Ireland
  3. 11:20-11:50 Moldova
  4. 12:00-12:30 Switzerland
  5. 13:40-14:10 Latvia
  6. 14:20-14:50 Romania
  7. 15:00-15:30 Denmark
  8. 16:00-16:30 Sweden
  9. 16:40-17:10 Austria

There will therefore be 9 countries getting their first taste of the stage and first impression from it. The first rehearsal is 30 minutes long.

This is how it works. As usual, in first go, countries rarely reveal everything from their staging, definitely not the clothes. But the fans get an idea of what direction the performance is heading towards. This is mostly a rehearsal for delegations: in-ear monitoring, checking the dressing room, etc. Then the delegations check the recordings and adjust if necessarily. After this, they work on the make-up, and then the Press Meet & Greet takes place.

Usually, the official site publishes photo sets from rehearsals and a short clip (around 90 seconds) about the artist’s impressions around 40 minutes later. Last year it was not possible for any fan sites to record anything else, so you’ll have to just read what everyone there thought about it without seeing more with your own eyes (and of course hear with your own ears).

  1. Sweden is fire!🔥

  2. So far, it seems that the whole gist of the contest will be in the second semi (plus one or two big5?) just like last year it was in the first. I can very well see no song from first semi finishing above 6th or 7th?

    • For some weird reason it usually seems like that; 2016 was, too.

    • I wouldn’t count Iceland out. Everyone else I will.

      • They drop in the odds just like Cyprus and Greece. Only Australia is rising.

        • No, they don’t. They are in exactly the same position as they were before rehearsals, in the middle group of top 10.

        • Except Conchita every winner dropped in the odds or at least did not rise in them during rehearsals!

        • Sweden drops in betting odds today too. But of course betting agencies have to trick gamblers. don’t pay much attention for now. Everything in top 15 has still winning potential. Only after semis, betting odds will be speaking the truth. For now, it’s only press people, hardcore fans reacting to what they read and betting agencies trying to blur things.

          • That’s true. Even after we see the final product in the semi, we do not always guess exactly how well or badly it can do in the final. Much less now.

            • Yes but after semis a much larger group of people gets exposed to the entries plus we’ve seen the whole 3min performance on TV and that’s when betting odds are becoming more accurate

    • CYP or even ISL could be there.

      • I think there is better in the uptempo side than Cyprus. She will do well in the NF but it is she who is most likely to do an Imri and finish quite low in the final, not Switzerland. Perhaps because it is the same clubbing type of song?

  3. Also it looks to be a very male affair so far. I wonder who will be the highest ranking female. I can’t see anyone in the top5 so far.

    • Turnabout is fair play; usually there seem to be tons of ballad women plus a handful of screamers.

      • This kind of ballads are really way past their peak in ESC. This year only NMK is going for one. Let’s see what Malta can do for the girls’team. It’s the only unknown so far.

    • Is this whole thing turning into misogynist Mello? It must be that Björkman again 😃

      • I think it’s part of 4porcelli says. Dami Im was probably the swan song of female screamer ballads but now they are not where the contest is at. Plus the whole music industry right now mostly revolves around male stars.

        • Biggest pop stars are female at the moment: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. After Bieber went to hiatus, there really isn’t a solo male pop star who is putting the charts on fire like those three ladies.
Screaming has been out long time outside the bubble. It might be finally reaching these shores as well.

          • Drake had half the Billboard chart to himself until recently at least. Post Malone and Ed Sheeran were the rest of the Billboard top3 in 2018. Then you have Maroon5, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars….

            • Hip hop is different story, but we were talking about pop, right? So I wouldn’t drag Drake here. Ed Sheeran is in the same level as those three women, rest are not.

            • I wrote music industry, not pop :) The thing with the female pop stars is that the whole thing is quite ageist and usually the flavour of the year is rapidly replaced by someone else. You had Katy Perry, then Miley Cyrus, then Taylor Swift, then Ariana and now Cardi B… Of course Beyonce has become an institution like Madonna once was, doing concept albums and living off her general celebrity.

            • Ariana Grande is bigger than ever at the moment. And Taylor Swift is as well. Cardi B has just started. Faster cycle isn’t a male female thing, it affects both genders. Also the ageism argumentation is kind of strange. Biggest pop stars have never been old. It’s not something that’s happening now.
Careers like Madonna’s are rare, they have always been. How many of the crop of 80’s survived to naughties as big star? One. Madonna. Beyoncé is on that track.

            • This year it has been more like Ariana Grande, Halsey or some random hip hop act.

        • Around males stars who ? Beyonce, Taylor, Cardi B, Dua Lipa are the first names that come to my mind when I think of music stars today.

    • S?sterz of course …

    • You will disagree but Katerine will probably be the highest ranked female. Unless Michela has a convincing live act tomorrow.

  4. People at my preview predicted Sweden as the most likely winner. I was very sceptical but reading reactions now, I might join the crowd. However, I am still worried how the televote will react to so many coloured people onstage. It is a shame and a disgrace that we need to think and talk about such a topic in 2019. :(

Come on Europe, prove me wrong!

    • I don’t think race mattered? Didn’t Jessy do surprisingly well back in 2010?

    • The european public might not appreciate a gospel song and I don’t see what this has to do with race. Did it have to do with race when they did not appreciate Waylon’s country rock last year?

    • Too Late for Love has such a huge live power as I witnessed in Friends Arena and it can be felt through tv. With so many luke warm stagings dripping from the pipe, who knows?
And colour issue really is shame and disgrace.

      • Oh come on not everything’s racist – maybe the song just isn’t very memorable (I can never remember it and I really tried). And maybe it’ll actually do quite well in televote because the singer will come across as more likeable than last 2 years’ Stureplan boys. We shall see…

        • I didn’t say anything about being racist. ESC is white, that is a fact. Other fact is that Too Late for Love isn’t that memorable.
But like I said many times before John is very convincing salesman. His performance will be one of the best this year. It’s that three minutes that will count. I have bought Too Late for Love every time I’ve seen it live, but never as audio only.

          • So we basically agree actually that in this case the singer is a plus (someone seemed to say he could be a victim of racism, don’t remember who; your comment was just a good jumping-off point for the counterargument). Though being a monster it could be that you are also racist and – see your comments on Conan – homophobic. Also… something else. I’ll come back when I remember what.

            • A republican! From the log house!

            • Log house with a sauna?

            • Elitist!

            • My house is actually late 60’s concrete brutalist, I don’t think they can come more elitist than that 😃

            • That’s probably intentionally subversive like Conan’s dancer?

            • Don’t know about that, but it surely is better looking, a handsome brute 😃

            • It’s regrettable that the one shirtless dancer should not have the typical ESC dancer’s body or charisma.

            • Well if I remember correctly, the moves are inspired by the music so if you consider that, they are actually appropriate…

            • I’m really at the satge that I think this will fail to qualify and the final spot will instead go to, of all songs, Estonia. I think the Bachelor will benefit from being surrounded by the AUS-ICE-PRT insanity, esp among his target demo of dreaming housewives.

            • I have said from the very begin it won’t make it. After I saw the rehearsal clip I’m very convinced about it. It’s just spooky and weird. Should probably be x rated.
Estonia is so unbelievably lame, but I do understand that you want to predict your Baltic bachelor in. Does your prediction have Belgium in too?

            • I thought at first it could make it on the weirdness and votes of the “It’s different so it’s good” crowd but there with POL, ICE and AUS there are 4 “different” acts in this semi and the others seem more authentic.
Belgium won’t make it for 2nd year in a row – it’s the weakest song they’ve had since their strong comeback and I’m sure I’m not the only one uncomfortable by the paedophile fantasy vibes. He just looks too young and if they had a female singer looking like she’s 12 there would be an uproar.

            • why uncomfortable? O:)

            • Eliot looks his age and the song is good. I wish I could say same about staging.
POR is just weird. Both AUS and ICE are weird and fun. There’s the fundamental difference and reason I had my doubts from the very beginning.

            • He looks like he’s 12 is the problem – weird as the staging is, it actually helps in distracting from that. Also the song kind of peters out after a strong beginning.
I actually prefer POR over AUS and ICE because the latter take themselves too seriously (“post-natal depression”) while the former is an intentional joke by two stoner bros. All pale next to s!sterz tho. For amazingness I mean.

          • Joelle, Amina and Imaani got 2nd with juries in the 90s: but both Joelle and Amina got 0 from Luxembourg (while mostly 12 from all the nordics and from Switzerland, who also gave 12 to France 92 <3)

          • (I agree with you, just gave the RARE counterpoints to prove how rare they were)

    • The problem is if it doesnt do well with televoting, we cant prove it is due to black persons performing.. :/

    • Sweden’s the likely compromise winner like AZE 2011 I think. Russia will probably rack up televote points esp. in the satellite states; NL I see more as a jury song (I like it but I think it’s too downbeat to win); Lindt-bunny will also be televote magnet but not appeal much to juries; Italy I have no idea where it will end because people will wrongly label it as rap, which leaves Sweden as the likeliest winner besides NL IMO (even though I can never remember the song).

      • Ukraine still won being downbeat

        • I wouldn’t call Ruslana downbeat.
Joking, obviously – I actually wouldn’t call Jamala’s song downbeat, it was more hysterical and in that sense dominant – plus the explosion of lights and color gave it additional energy.

  5. I like wiwi guys a lot but now Moldova is not just qualifying, it is winning the semi and goes top 10 easily in the final as well :-) :-)

    • They seem to be alone with this opinion.

      • The difference between Sweden and Switzerland and the rest is huge.

        • I am genuinely worried about Armenia.

          • She is not qualifying. Alone on stage, first in the running order, unflattering outfit, hyper and angry…She will do an Amandine. Austria will be in instead.

            • +weak voice.

            • I thought she was ok in the chorus but could be better in the verses. But like with Romania, the anger is the general impression left here.

            • Plus she starts with -1 country it can get any points from.

She is very good on stage but what were they thinking leaving her alone ? Even I could stage that better…

            • Armenia does not have a big budget for Sascha this year, just like they didn’t with Artsvik’s much better song…

            • They have enough of a budget to have constant fire jets as we saw in today’s rehearsal which are known to be expensive. They did not lack money imo but they are overconfident about their singer’s capabilities.

            • Perhaps she is over-confident in herself then.

            • I don’t think she is good on stage. She performs a persona in the music video she isn’t. And she isn’t capable of bringing that image on stage. There is nothing sexy or fierce or slaying about her. They did her a big injustice with this song.

          • I had Armenia as a very likely non-qualifier for quite some time.

    • They say that? Just like they did with Belarus. Those opinions do not sound very “clean” I have to say…

  6. Sweden is what we expected, very good and John is on point in more than one way. Austria is delivering too but the song isn’t there. That odd are shortening might not mean a lot in the end; they are just correcting their previous mistake of having it second to last.

    • Until now we haven’t seen an Eleni (or Conchita or Common Linnets).

      • Exactly but it’s not as if such a thing was happening every year, anyway.

        • Exactly. Dark horses like that are exceptions, so I wonder why some people expect them to happen every year.
The only one that can surprise positively tomorrow is North Macedonia. And to be honest, I doubt that to happen. Qualifier probably, but not a contender for the win.

          • It’s beautiful old fashioned song, well sang and produced in it’s downscaled fashion. I really hope it gets to final, but it will get driven over by brasher and louder choices. It’s very cruel sports, hunger game played by songs.

  7. Michos mentioned the anger in the Romanian performance. This is a choice I don’t get at all, because in every photo and video we saw of Ester she seems so sweet and likeable. And now they destroyed one of the few redeeming factors Romania 19 had.

  8. John has very badly cut trousers. So unflattering! Looks like some fatty twerking time to time.

  9. Sweden, Switzerland and Denmark were the best and most convincing today. Both Flags were ready and cooked to point. Switzerland gave thunder warning. Let’s see how Chingiz will be dancing and partying tomorrow.

  10. Sweden may puke on the stage but still they can create faints around. Switzerland is overhyped imo. I do understand everything but watching vids I can’t understand complains about Srbuk’s vocals and look. Her song simply requires big diapazone and she delivers it quite well. Yes wouldn’t mind some some naked chest guys turning around her like in video but there are EBU rules . I’m sorry for Srbuk. She would rather chose Halph Goddess as her entry. She deserved better result … AMPTv would rather look for a hot singing guy with hairy chest and who won’t mind to show his ass for 2020. Or Lilit Hovhannisyan…

    • The thing is Sweden never pukes on stage or on viewers. They always come with accomplished, detailed act. Whether you like it or not is different story. Didn’t like Sanna Nielsen and I didn’t like Frans, but their stagings were still among the best.

    • She chose the wrong song, the wrong look, the wrong stage presentation. What a waste of a good singer.

    • I liked what I saw this morning. The song is not my biggest favourite, but the clip left no doubts about her capability to deliver her vocally challenging song.

  11. I hope that I am wrong, but I fear that Sweden will flop this year.
It will easily qualify, of course, when I say “flop” I mean it will finish around 10th place in the finals.

Juries will like it more (around 5th or 6th place), but I don’t see televote placing them better then 10th place in the finals.

Sweden is my 1st favourite this year, I like both the song and performance, and I really really hope I got it wrong this time.

  12. Turkey’s top electoral body rules that Istanbul elections won by the opposition to be repeated, state-run Anadolu says.
Of course they would not let the opposition get the biggest money making city of Turkey🙄

  13. I honestly feel the so-called eurovision “press” is trying to shower Sweden with praise this year to compensate for the ridiculous treatment they served to Benjamin last year. And mostly not on artistic grounds but because they had personal animosity towards him for whatever reason (could be the hungary song incident but then we talk about the same crowd worshipping the ground Sobral walks on…).

  14. I went over the snippets and haven’t read any comments yet, here or elsewhere. First impressions: a sea of bright colours and some expensive gimmicks; Sweden is the most probable winner (as I have said all along; it remains to be seen how they will fare with the televoters); Luca does not look like he’s doing what comes natural to him; neither him nor Tamta can make an Eleni out of their songs, ugly outfit as predicted, the press went wilde (the same will happen with Azerbaijan); Srbuk, like Luca and Tamta, went for a song that does no fit her persona; to top it all, Armenia is making the same obvious mistake they made in 2018 – no backing singers on stage; Ireland looks colourful, but cold at this point; Austria looked classy and elegant; Romania looked overstaged. Moldova looked dull and hollow. Latvia came across as discreet.

P.S. – Waiting for Russia and the Netherlands now. I still think it will be between Sweden and Russia in that order.

  15. Roko singing some of the entries he is going to lose to next thursday :

This video is a prime example of how much the artist matters to deliver the emotional content of a song. “Arcade” is almost ruined even though he is a very talented singer as well. All subtlety this song needs is lost.

    • It’s more wailing than singing, isn’t it?

      • I don’t think he is a bad singer in any way. He needs more training of course and just sing different kinds of songs. Not every singer can or should sing songs with the layered emotional qualities “Arcade” has.

        • He can’t spell the word subtlety and is very sloppy when it comes to properly holding and finishing those loud and long notes he obviously is so fond of. No, Idon’t think that he is a good singer at this point. He might be in the future. The lungs are already in place. :)

          • Not every singer needs to be subtle in their approach that is my point. I enjoyed Pastora Soler for her immense talent and passionate delivery and I am glad she was not subtle about it. The same way I enjoy Duncan for being subtle. I would never want to listen to Pastora singing “Arcade”, the same way I would never want Duncan to sing “Quedate Conmigo”. Neither would be able to bring out of the other person’s song what I, at least, enjoyed about them.

            • Pastora was very subtle in the first half of her song. I have never had an issue with her vocals. In fact, I rank her among the best ESC singers ever. It’s ‘QCM’ I can’t warm up to.

            • And here I am actually enjoying the last part of the vocal outburst more in that particular song from that particular singer :) Conveying emotion is such a complicated thing with so many possible artistic outlets imo. Not all of us will be receptive to the same emotional outlet from a song of course but at least in esc I think there is something for everyone to feel that.

            • ESC has sth for everyone and that’s what makes it a singular event in the entire world. :)

    • Denmark and Sweden were the best imo…I am a bit disappointed with Romanian staging and Ester’s facials but I still like the song

      • Denmark? The bucket song?

        • Bucket song? The chair song 😃
          Don’t you like it…super cute and positive💜

          • On our preview party, a close friend commented as follows: “This one scares the shit out of me. It’s like a nightmare from Alice in Wonderland involving an ever smiling governess.” That sums it up perfectly imo.

            • LOL never examined her that way…that big chair and the sweetness of the melody prevented me🙃

            • I am not very fond of sweets to begin with … I’d rather have garlic. I read that Ester’s performance is Dracula inspired. Does it feature garlic?

            • LOL I am not complaining much as I like scary stuff…but isn’t it hilarious that Draculas are afraid of garlics?😃couldn’t they find a proper thing like ladies with angry faces?

            • Perhaps Ester is trying to scare them off. Everything will become clear in the SF. :)

  16. Paenda! <3

  17. OMG, did the Moldovans really buy this sand paintress for their terrible act? How shameless…
This girl is getting on my nerves. She already brought Ukrainian Mika Newton a completely undeserved good result. Hopefully she won’t push this Moldovan soap actress to the final…

  18. On a more positive note, the Swiss performance is surprisingly good. Based on this short snippet…

  19. Armenia: I like the lighting and the song is a powerful opener, but I find it weird she’s alone on stage. Should have tried to replicate the video I think. I think it likely qualifies could be a shock BA?

Ireland: I love the staging theme, but her vocals were subpar and it’s completely overshadowed by Denmark/Austria with this shit draw.

Moldova: Yikes, I hated UKR 11 mostly cause the sand artist was a coverup for a terrible song. Worse song here and nowhere near the voting power of Ukraine. NQ.

Switzerland: It looks slick but kind of a bore? His vocals are fine for what a shake song needs to be, and he has the looks and charisma. I feel this is lacking something in the staging…will qualify though.

Latvia: Hard to judge because the close-up camera work is what this song is built for. Underrated but too soft in some ways…I think it will escape the televote bottom 3 with neighbour/diaspora votes, can the jury squeeze it in?

Romania: The vocals are still quite bad, the staging design is good though. Still can’t see this doing very well in either vote, but it might steal Armenia’s spot as a female moody ballad?

Denmark: Have said it all along, this is 100% qualifying and may end up Top 5 in this semi. Cute, great staging, and Leonora is more confident now.

Sweden: I thought they said they would change the staging? Either way it’s still great live, he’s extrenely charismatic and personable. I think it’ll do better than Benjamin in the televote but enough better to challenge for the win? Not so sure…

Austria: This has been up and down for me, but I really liked the staging for this. She stands out as a performer and has a good slot. I think there’s a spot open for this or Latvia to get through on the jury vote, and Austria is ahead right now on that front.

  20. Why does everyone hate Angel? I love both the English and the Ukraine version, have both in my iTunes. And the English version has such a beautiful intro.

    • i HATED it, I think it’s the least memorable top 5 this century and think it got lucky it was in the most split jury/televote year to get top 5

    • To be fair I hated it, but 2011 is also the worst ESC since the jury-televote split in 09 I’d say. So I try to block that year out in general lol.

      • We had Georgia and Serbia, who both were brilliant. My opinion about it may be biased, because we were actually there. And that is an experience every eurovision fan should have at least once.

    • Its a very mediocre song plus the “we are angels we are in danger we are crystal white” kind of makes me feel uncomfortable as I associate the white the way it is mentioned with skin colour and it really does not bond well for me.

      • To be honest, I never understood what she was singing. I even have trouble understanding lyrics in Dutch. But that is a bit uncomfortable, I agree.

    • I don’t hate it. To me it is just another ballad, nice to listen to while it is on. But I would never actively go for this song in my playlist.

  21. But I got to give to Moldova : before today nobody even talked about this entry and now look at us even here. Their entry is the talk of the town. Not for the right reasons but still of they go with the “any publicity is good publicity” dogma they have succeeded into causing a fuss yet again even with a no hoper of a song.

  22. From what I saw I liked Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden :)

Just when I thought I understood what the Romanian song is about (a lady turning into a witch or something like that after being betrayed, like “Maleficient”) I read there’s a fight between water and fire/good and evil :/

The Swedish stapler would look so much better if it’s turned into a cross, aesthetically speaking, but everybody would complain for the religious symbol.
