Romania: Second Semi-Final Tonight!

Romania – TVR, the national broadcaster of Romania, will resume tonight this year’s Selecția Națională 2019, the national final for Romania. Watch the show live with us!

This year’s national final, whose slogan is “Împlineşte visul!” (“Fulfill the dream!”), is down to 24 from last year’s 60, that toured the country in celebration of its independence!

Now these 24 didn’t get picked that easily. After the original 24 were announced, Dan Bittman, the very first artist to represent Romania in the contest, in 1994, withdrew his entry “Pierd” from the contest due to conflicting schedules, also saying he’d rather have someone younger to represent the country. But instead of one replacement, we got two! As Bella Santiago’s “Army of Love” and Linda Teodosiu’s “Renegades” received wildcards. After the announcement of the two wildcard acts, Mihai withdrew his entry “Baya” from the contest: he alleged that the broadcaster had obvious favorites and would favour these contestants (one of the wildcards is now considered a big favorite to win).

Twelve acts were then supposed to perform their song tonight, and another twelve were supposed to perform in the first semi-final two weeks ago. However, in a last minute amendment, TVR reverted to the original semi-final splits, moving Laura Bretan back to the second semi-final (that should now feature 13 acts instead), keeping her away from the other favorite, the wildcard Bella Santiago, who performed last in the first semi… However, Xandra withdrew as well, making this a 12 participants semi-final in the end!

The five songs with the most points from the national jury will qualify for the final. An extra act which receive the most televotes will also proceed to the final.

So tonight’s semi-final line-up ends up looking like this:

  1. 2 Gents – Ielele
  2. Georgy – Tears
  3. Olivier Kaye – Right now
  4. Xonia – Discrete
  5. TWM – Make me your man
  6. Johnny Bădulescu – Give up now
  7. Echoes – High heels on
  8. Aldo Blaga – Your journey
  9. Letitia Moisescu & Sensibil Balkan – Daina
  10. Laura Bretan – Dear father
  11. Ester Peony – On a Sunday
  12. Linda Teodosiu – Renegades

The show starts at 20:00 CET and can be watched here.

  1. This final recap looks to me like Maltese NF, seriously..

  2. 2 Gents didn’t qualify? Well that was your one chance with me Romania and you blew it.

  3. Considering how much I hate Laura and her song, I have to be team Bella for the final :o

  4. Yeah! The LORD had advanced our sister Laura-Ivanka with her “My heart belongs to Daddy” jammering! What a relief after after this morning’s hot gay muslim-catholic/s.

  5. With Shefita the 4 finalists in Israel have been decided.I bet you haven’t heard this version of “Feeling good” before:

  6. Hataris’s english translation

    Hate will prevail

    The rivelry was unrestrained
    The hangover is endless
    Life is meaningless
The emptiness will get us all

    Hate will prevail
    Happiness will end
    For it is an illusion
    A treacherous pipe dream

    All that I saw
    Tears ran down
    All that I gave
    Once gave
I gave it all to you

    Multilateral delusions
    Unilateral punishments
    Gullible poor fellows
    The escape will end
The emptiness will get us all

    Hate will prevail
    Europe will crumble
    A web of lies
    Will arise from the ashes
    United as one

    All that I saw
    Tears ran down
    All that I gave
    Once gave
I gave it all to you

    All that I saw
    Tears ran down
    All that I gave
    Once gave
I gave it all to you

    Hate will prevail
    Love will die
    Hate will prevail
    Happiness will end
    For it is an illusion
    A treacherous pipe dream

    Hate will prevail

    • Sounds like a pretentious attempt at being rebellious and edgy.

      • It sounds ominous but i believe it will get the political protest vote with the contest being held in Tel Aviv and them challenging Netanyahu in person.

        • Isn’t ICE in the same semi as POR? They would likely cannibalize each other – provided this and Conan qualify, which is by no means a given IMHO.

          • Conan Osiris deals more with social problems in the modern world. His lyrics are not aggressive and divisive.
I read that hatari want to be refered to as the award winning Icelandic anti-capitalist BDSM techno performers art group Hatari. They also have a spekesperson. :P

        • GOSH Hera will be second just like in Denmark that year, she always comes 2nd in NFs, with ballad.. :(

    • They have a point there but all that defeatist aggression is very lame imo. It is so 2019 to be angry and emotional but not to think about solutions. It is zeitgeist posing with very little substance. One the other hand, I really love Hatari’s dancer.
I don’t think that the EBU would allow those lyrics to travel to Tel Aviv unchanged.

    • This is currently my favorite NF entry

  7. I’d die for smth like this in Tel Aviv for SWE! <3

  8. Serbian songs

  9. I watched ”If Beale Street Could Talk” last night and I really enjoyed. Don’t get why is not nominated for more Oscars, yet one might say I am biased…:p

  10. Mahmood has done a coupe of interviews where he’s implied it’s not 100% certain that he goes to Tel Aviv yet.

  11. there are rumors about international jury in Romanaian final.. Conchita , Netta and Eleni Foureira will be 3 /6 jurors.. we will see.. :D
