ETSC 10 – The Results Tonight!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! Signing up opens soon! 40 of you entered for the August 2018 edition and the voting went on for ten days! The results are coming very soon!

ach summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 9 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France; the 8th edition was held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece. The last edition to date was hosted last July and was won by Switzerland’s CRIMER with “Brotherlove. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 40 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

You can click on the picture below to listen to the songs again:

These songs were presented by the following HoDs, in alphabetical order: Anders, Arpatilaos, Avat, Bay, Caolán, Cathal, Coyote, Cyphermusic, Daniel, Dimitris, Dino, Dominik, Donnie, Donnyademaj, Ellie, Franco, Greg, Gregor, Hjallis, Jerry, Lars, Luke, Marko, Martin, Max, Michos, Mylor, Oasisoffear, Ovidarch, Oxi, Pablo, Patrick P, PJ, Razvan, Sekhmet Morgan, Shevek, Tecku, Tehoe, Togravus and William.

It was ten days ago that we discovered each song individually in a dramatic night reveal-show. And after that, the players cast a vote. One person could not vote in time, and even with me giving a bit of extended time through last night, the person declined “rushing” through the songs and for others’ and fairness sake, that person accepted that his song got DQ. That song was ranked 10th with all the other 39 votes and it lost all its points, it will be shown in the scoreboards each time. For prediction game, since people did not know, and since the song was only 10th, I have counted as a right guess both the song that was DQ and the song that did end up 10th.

This tenth event is officially hosted in St Gallen, Switzerland. The hosts will be Lauriane Gilliéron, Peter Stamm and James Gruntz! The venue is the Tonhalle of St Gallen:

And so this is what bookies have for tonight:

Now, all you need to do is get ready and prepared. The votes will be revealed one by one, following the random draw in which the songs were presented (so from Russia to Romania). One vote at a time, with a few minutes in between to give enough time for people to react, predict, comment, discuss. Also, if the person is around, he can, if he wishes to, explain a bit further his votes, what he thought of the songs. The votes are all on a scoreboard, to not reveal too much for people who can’t make it tonight, and you’ll see links for them in this page (so you’ll need to refresh often).

  1. I’m officially the king of 7s and 9s.3X7 and 3X9 in ETSC.

  2. Songs I knew before hand were UK, Morocco, Cyprus and Israel (that one because Michos posted it in VFoS).

As for the winner, I ranked it 15th and I could have given it some points. Still I am not ao keen on it. Congrats Dominik!

    • Thanks! I’m totally fine with your opinion. That’s what makes music so interesting. Different tastes and having various preferences. I had your song at 14th place by the way.

    • I knew only Moldova and Malta (surprisingly). I think I’ve heard Israel before too when Michos posted it in VFoS but didn’t really remember it.

  3. Wait! Isn’t it also Bay’s first top10?

  4. The largest ESC country and the smallest ESC country get top 10 :O

  5. 11th! I will take that :)

  6. Congrats, Dominik, what a fantastic first season! I’m really glad, cause I liked both of your songs.

Also very happy for Donnie (my 8 points) and for Martin (no points from me – I’m not very fond of his voice -, but very happy for your medal!).

Special mention goes to my dear Pablito: 4th place in ETSC is a great achievement, and that with San Marino! Very well done!

Thank you, Morgon, for one more fantastic edition!

  7. Thank you everyone who voted for me/Turkey, thats Tecku, Hjallis, Dominik, Ovi, Anders, Martin, Pablo, Greg, Oxi, PJ, Jerry and Michos. Gregor we can talk later ;) :P

Really proud of 12th out of 40, would have loved to stay in the Top 10, but arguably this is my best result (came 11th in FDLC 6 but that only had 23 contestants). Hopefully I’ve still done Mermaid/Turkey proud.

Thank you for Morgan for being a fantastic host, there would be no ETSC without you.

  8. I’ll post the full scoreboard and logo soon! gime me a time to breathe!

  9. Well done to Germany! At first I didn’t think I would give it any points, thought it would be a 11-15th case for me, but then it kept growing on me. A well deserved victory for sure. Also glad to see most of my favourites doing well, especially San Marino – not an easy country to play with for sure!

And of course, thanks to all who voted for Finland, it’s highly appreciated. My best result by a significant margin!

  10. WINNER:

    MEDALISTS:

    TOP 5:

    TOP 10:

  11. Congratulations to Dominik and Germany. Waiting for the new thread to elaborate on my thoughts. :)

  12. Congrats Dominik for a fantastic win !!! Not only did I predict you right but I also gave your song 8p. (That makes it 2 winners I voted for this summer)
Hopefully you will be joining us in VFoS for the September edition!

    Amazing winner once again!!!

  13. Besides languages (French ties English at 2, a huge massive win for national languages in the Top 10), we also have a rare case of second half getting 5 in the Top 10 at last (after the dominance of first half in most editions), with 4 in a row (Russia, France, Denmark, Finland) with Netherlands 13th going right before too!

  14. Also, this summer gave me both my worst and best ETSC result. It’s funny :)

  15. The updated Top 10 placement map, including the impressive finish for San Marino:

  16. My votes in the previous edition: 7/10 english and 7/10 male vocals

My votes in this edition: 9/10 not english (!) and 6/10 female.

So my votes were quite “in synch” with the general sentiment…

    • I checked mine too:
ETSC 9: 8/10 English and 7/10 male vocals
ETSC 10: 6/10 Non-English (including my whole top 4) with 5 female vocals and 6 male vocas (one being mixed, Russia)

  17. And I am over the moon having finished in 22nd place which is much more than I expected. I think that it is the 2nd best result for FYR MAK ever. :) More on that once the winner article is up. Thanks to everyone who voted Miyatta. :)

  18. Thanks to everyone who has voted for me. Franco, Tecku, Luke, Ovi, Avat, Martin, Cathal, Marko, William, Oxi, PJ, Daniel, Shevek, Donnyademaj, Michos, Razvan, Dimitris, Donnie, Morgan, Tehoe – you’re the best! <3 If I missed anyone here, call me out!

At first I intended to go with another Slavic country this time, but when I discovered Elif I knew I had to claim her. Usually I don't listen to German music. Most mainstream songs are generic, the artists are disposable and the lyrics…no comment. But Elif captured me from the very first note. And I'm grateful many of you felt the same way about the song.

So, here it is. The live reprise of ''Doppelleben''. Enjoy!

    • It’s true that most of us struggle to find something good from Germany. You should be doubly proud!

    • You know when I played your song to my bf, in the beginning he said “oh I don’t like how german sounds when they sing”…By the end of it he turns around and says “this is a really good song!” :)

    • Germany probably has the least interesting music scene in Europe imo. We have all those sensitive guys narcissitically circuiting their egos (Bendzko, Weiss, Schulze etc.). Elif is different but alas I am no fan of the song you submitted. The lyrics are too lachrymose for a tough guy like me. ;)
      Well deserved victory nevertheless. :)

      • Sad but true. And the list goes on (Forster, Bourani, drop a name…). All of these are guys. The only female artist in the contemporary pop genre enjoying success atm is Namika.
I listened to interviews with Elif before submitting the song and I really liked what she aimed with the song. When she left home at the age of 19 Elif had little contact to her parents for the next five years. They only exchanged a few meaningless words, but didn’t talk about their feelings, thoughts and wishes. ”Doppelleben” was the song that reunited them and made them more open to each other. And I just love her for sharing her experience in an artistic way.

  19. Yay top 10! And first vote ever from Morgan.

Regarding San Marino, it finished 3rd in my contest of 30s HOD
