ETSC Stats (10th Edition Anniversary)

ETSC will celebrate its 5 years / 10th edition anniversary this August! As the contest keeps bringing new players, getting comebacks from old ones and steadily going strong with many regulars, now is a good time to show a bit of stats before we start St Gallen’s edition! Not far behind, United-Kingdom has 6 and Finland has 5! On the other hand, this is an edition of newbies and returns: Australia and Poland join for the first time, with Greece and Turkey getting only their second after being in the Top 10 in 2014 only! Iceland, likewise, was in the first three Top 10 but none since and until this one!
  • No less than 4 new HoD in the Top 10, including the Top 2, with Oxi, David, Michos and Kostas! Three Greeks among them, with Donnie and Dimitris both getting their 6th Top 10 out of 8 editions and the country winning the contest! PJ gets two Top 3 in the same summer: a new power HoD?
  • Notice how the first half of the draw completely crashed the second half in this one!

Switzerland becomes the first country since the first edition (for obvious reasons) to win without ever having been in the Top 10 before! Lebanon also joins the club and Poland gets a second 9th place in a row! For all their predicted strong results, Norway and Greece only get their third whereas often overlooked Finland manages to tie the United-Kingdom with 6!
  • 3 new HoD taste their first Top 10 with Jerry, newcomer Dominik, and never-missing-an-edition Patrick P! Michos gets a second one in a row while Dimitris secures second place with no less than 7 out of 9 editions!

  1. So when is the songs’ reveal? Monday or Tuesday?

  2. The medal file has been updated with ETSC 9 and a few changes here and there (it’ll be changed every edition with new medal winners anyway! With the tenth edition, I’ll change the overall format and have 6 columns instead of 3 with 5 editions on the left and 5 on the right to make it easier to look at on screen! Also not happy with all pictures (it’s very hard to get groups in round pictures!)

  3. To celebrate this blind edition of ETSC, PJ Productions © proudly presents the «It’s a mystery» series – random songs from ESC related with mystery, crime, murder…

    Here’s our first entry:

Mata Hari, any man would pay the price of sweet surrender
Mata Hari, for the promise in your eyes – it was so tender
All the secrets sealed with their lips, they gave away for a kiss
The eye of the morning and star of the night was your name

    • One of the many failed attempts to make ESC sound modern …

      • We also had «Sing sang song» :)

      • Have you followed smth at 2018 European champs at Athletics in Berlin?
Did you like results? Your fave athletes achieved good results?
What do you think about Russian ban?
        Do you like Sandra Perkovic?

        • State-sponsored doping has no place in sports (even less so than regular doping). If they didn’t have oil, gas and a large military, Russia would be an outcast like N Korea and its battered slave, Syria.
Berlin, as always (well post-1945) was a great host. Love the city and its residents indestructible attitude (meaning original residents not the “daddy’s paying for my creative start-up” crowd flocking there in recent years).

          • You went too far with Russia this time..I don’t like doping, but Russia has great athletes you can’t deny that..

US also has doping I’m sure, but they don’t control them enough IMO.

What about Italy? Without athletes from Ethiopia and Morocco Italy (once a great Atheltic nation) wouldn’t have any single medal at Euro champs.. :/

            • I agree Russia has great athletes unfortunately they’re tainted because of involvement in a sytem that is corrupt (like in other countries as well I agree though there many times it is (cycling) sponsor-sponsored rather than state-sponsored.
Italy (and others) – obviously it’s a plus when athletes with immigrant roots do well and are accordingly honoured (which seems e.g. the case with French football team of German one in 2014). When they’re just imported to win medals like in slave-trading Qatar, it’s deplorable. But from what I’ve followed that seems to be limited to v few (usually middle Eastern theocratic cleptocratic) countries. If it’s not that, up the immigrants – it’s often a good path to success for those talented folks!

          • Do you like some Russian athletes?

            • Honestly I mainly follow football (and some watersports – spare me the puns – partly because I used to swim at state level in HS, partly because the guys are pretty much my physical ideal – hello, Tom Daley!) so can’t really say much about athletes in general. I will say that I have zero interest in cycling, which seems to be especially affected by doping.

        • I watched some. I was devastated when Kevin Mayer did not achieve a result in long jump. My favourite competition was the pole vault (men), and my favourite results were Belgium winning the 400 meter relay and Gesa Felicitas Krause winning the steeple chase. I also watched a lot of diving from Edinburgh. :)
I am sort of indifferent when it comes to Sandra Perkovic because I prefer watching running and jumping competitions. As for the ban on Russia I don’t have an opinion because I only have opinions on things I know all relevant facts about. It is a more a question of who you believe more, and I have more trust in the IAAF than in Russia. Therefore I agree with the ban but I might be wrong.

          • OK I love you but here you gave the salesman’s answer of “you are both right – all sides have good arguments.”

            • No, it is a moral principle. I did not vote in the Stuttgart 21 referendum f. e. because I did not know enough facts. My feeling told me ‘no’ but I don’t like making decisions based on feelings, with the exception of love of course.

          • I knew you will like 4 X 400 results for men..brothers Borlee took silver and bronze in 400 individual too! :D
Armand Duplantis and Timur Morgunov are new forces in men paul vault..they will be very good in future, Duplantis 18 yaers old european champ OMG!
I love Ekaterini Stefanidi in women paul vault, but silver fror Greece too OMG! :D
I was very sad our Ivana had to withdraw from long jump women final :( Then Malaika Mihambo from Germany took the gold, you like her? :)
I miss many world athletes, European champ is good, but without Kenya, South Africa, USA, Barshim (Qatar) it is only half fun.. :)
            I like Nafisato Thiam! :D
Do you like Mariya Lasitskene in wpmen high jump?
I like her, but i also like Mirlea Demireva.
            Jungfleisch was third! :)
Interesting, Germans love throwing competitions cause they have so good athletes and medalists there.. :)

            • Any reason why Serbia has fallen back in athletics?

            • Serbia has never been good in Athletics, comparing Serbia and Italy in Athetics is funny as hell! :D We only have few individuals at times like all countries (atm Ivana Spanovic in long jump)
But Greece to have 3 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze in Atheltics (all Greek competitors) and Italy such a bad position is strange…

            • There a Cypriot guy (110m) wit surname Trajkovic competing in Athletics recently. He was 4th this year at the Commonwealth Games and Indoors Champ but failed to reach the final at the European Champ. I think he was ranked 10th/11th overall. Could he be of Serbian origin? He was born and raised in Cyprus as far as I know.

On another no thanks for the 12pts to Kenya (VFoS8). Are you into African acoustic music in general?

            • Of course I know Trajkovic, he is not anonimous in Athletics world at all :D he is Serbian.. with Cypriot citzenship..this year he was silver medalists at World Indoor Champs in Birmingham in 60 meters hurdles! That is fantastic result!!
I really like that entry of yours and I’m into that music..

            • If you are into that music style then you might like then the following:

              FdlC13 Gambia
              FdlC16 Cape Verde
              FdlC17 Mali

            • And Milan Trajkovic was born in Serbian town of Surdulica.. :)

            • Yes, I am a Borlee guy. :)
Greece has been very strong in many jumping competitions. :)
I am no fan of Ms Lasitskene, who comes across as a grumpy robot imo. ;)

            • Hahahahahahahaha grumpy robot! :D
I doubt anybody will jump more than 2.09 (world record of Stefka Kostadinova from Bulgaria from 1987), I remember how many times Blanka Vlasic tried that and jumped 2.08, but never 2.09! :D
My fave athlete atm is Marie-Josee Ta Lou from Ivory Coast! :D I hope she become Wold and Olympic champ..

          • @toggie -.actually love is the worst factor to base decisions on since it’s by definition an invitation for disaster (I realize this shows my – experience-based – cynicism as well as my excessive reliance on hyphns and brackets).

    • It’s funny to remember that Norway used to be one of the tragic joke countries of ESC when now they often have good entries and a v strong music industry, along with excellent production facilities. When I grew up (mid-1990s of course), the jokes were usually NOR, FIN (both often trying too hard like BEL often does nowadays) as well as TUR and GRE (which were widely seen as folkloristic). This was really consistent, as opposed to the variation of higsh and lows many countries were seen to have (GER of course being a prime example of the rollercoaster).

      • But Norway has some very nice songs during the 60s and the 70s, don’t you agree? You’re probably referring to the 90s…

        • Alas no – despite having subsequently watched, of course, all ESCs, I mainly remember my “live” ESCs i.e. mid-70s – to mid-80s and then post-2001 and in the first timeframe Norway seemed to either do sth. weirdly pseudo-folkloristic or, worse, tried to imitate modern pop (not sure which category the dreadful Bobbysocks fall into). But that’s just my personal taste… which songs would you recommand?

    • I absolutely LOVE Norway 1976

    • I like her style, but not the song. Anne-Karine looks like she came directly from Studio 54. However other countries did better transporting disco sound to Eurovision.

    • Ah, this is wonderful and highly entertaining specimen ESC disco. It’s a very niche sub genre of disco, of course, but it let’s us in to local European disco flavors. Love it!

      • To Hjallis and Dominik:

        ❤️

        • Classic Philly Sound! But I prefer good old fucking Europe when it comes to disco music. Here’s one of my faves:

I know it’s trash and she’s a space slut who can’t sing to save her life, but I love it! <3

          • I had never heard that one! LOL Love it! Thank you!

          • Yeah, she is a proper space slut, but who cares if she can sing or not. This is euro disco classic, that paved way to synth pop revolution in early 80’s. It’s highly underrated, if you ask me!
Europe always stayed on the trashy side of disco. I love it from both sides of Atlantic. Thank god Jacques Morali did his trash magic on Casablanca. American disco needed it’s fun moments too!

            • I wouldn’t go that far and say it made a path for later synthpop artists. There were a few names (Kraftwerk/ Giorgio Moroder/ Patrick Cowley come to my mind) who were bigger influences to the genre.
Yeah, American disco needed some extra flavour. Most of their efforts seem demure and uptight. But that changed later on with Hi-NRG, New Wave and Chicago House.

            • I wasn’t talking about biggest influences, I was talking about influences. Automatic Lover was one of the biggest successes in introducing the electric sound to mainstream audiences straight after I Feel Love, it was also introducing new soundscape in the late 70’s mainstream radio. Cowley started in early 80’s, the same time the synth pop became a big phenomen in UK. Hi Nrg owns a lot to tracks like Automatic Lover. It’s also good to remember that Giorgio Moroder was classified as trash back then as was I Feel Love. His adulation was long overdue, started some time in naughties.
I never bash American disco, it’s great. Chicago house kept it well alive in the underground.

            • Fair point. Despite being a massive hit ”Automatic Lover” vanished into oblivion. Seems kinda unfair it doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
I had no clue about Moroder. How could the mastermind behind ”I Feel Love” and ”Call Me” be considered trash?
Surely there are some American disco acts I love: Chic or Amii Stewart for example. Personally I feel American disco took itself too seriously when it’s supposed to be fun and danceable. I miss concept albums like ”Cosmic Curves” these days as well. Mainstream music is all about the clicks but missing creativity heavily.

Nile Rodgers had a fantastic song with Christina Aguilera some years ago and it’s pure magic. The man still knows how to produce good music.

            • I loved Get Down! Even though the story line sucked, music and visuality of this journey into birth of disco and hip hop, both very dear genres to me, in New York made it such a treat.
Nile Rodgers made such a impactful come back and rightfully so with his Daft Punk collaboration. He is one of my all time favourite producers as is Giorgio Moroder. Rockists vilified both of them along with all disco music as they set the standards in popular music for very long time. Burning disco records on the stadium was sad act of patriarchal rage against gays, blacks, women and girls. Well, it turned out well as it was rock music that became a dying dinosaur with very minor cultural impact outside middle aged + white men’s world 😃
American disco is black (even white Americanised BeeGees, Moroder, Morali etc.) it’s a variation of r’n’b, even Village People have groove that Eurodisco acts can only dream of, because Eurodisco is a variation of pop music. I find American disco much more danceable and my list is really endless. When ot comes to Eurodisco I go full on French 😃

        • ❤️A classic, got couple of their albums. Big fan of Jacques Morali here, France’s gift to American disco ❤️

        • Patric Juvet found his inner Studio54 with Jacques Morali and probably unmarried Marie during the process! I love this one.

          • lol juvet was a notorious gay here and only sang about f*cking women rofl

          • Bonuspoints for name-checking Cailtlin, despite her dreadful politics!

          • I think she gave up on the Senate run after being disappointed by both her initial favorite, Ted Dracula Cruz and then her #2 the orange dumpster. Actually haven’t heard anything from her in a while. I’d like to think that it’s due to self-reflection rather than hunting for the next reality TV momet of fame. Loved “Can’t stop the music” though!

            • He was so hot! Wonder how good times he actually had with entire Village People on the set.😃
She did her first fortune with ground breaking sponsorship deals in sports and the second one by masterminding Keeping up with Kardashians, so who knows what she comes up with next after this quiet period.

            • @Hjallis – mentioning that as I’m not sure what, eh, position, my comment ends up in – he was hot despite being one of the few non-monority, non-facial hair guys in the film. I’m always amazed nobody ever draws the connection between that movie and Jenner’s sexual identity issues – although admittedly she makes it difficult to take her seriously for “neutrals” with her politics and reality TV performances, especially in her own show, which was akin to a rich white girl showing bewilderment that others can’t just joyfully live the life. What I really want to know though – who is your fave Village Person?

            • My favourite Village People characters are biker and construction worker. Glenn Huges’ facial hair still belongs to wonders of the world (and I just love his cutest macho dancing in leather gear) and David Hodo taught me how the jeans should fit and look on a man. I love Village People. Their energising gay liberation anthems are sexy, groovy, uplifting and full of positive testosterone, I’m talking about first four albums here. It’s like being in the locker room after victorious match. They say there is not a better thing than to be a sexually active gay man. The concept is stroke of genius as is the excution. Never a dull momemt and unshamefully gay back in the days of shame. The epic line in the Women “I love women, allthough they are women” summarises it all,

      • I read this very interesting article on the Finnish 1918 civil war in the Greek edition of Huffington Post today :)

        • It’s still after one hundred year a very difficult issue here, highly emotional and partisan. Also the aftermath in 20’s and 30’s still not properly covered in academic research. Would love to read that one 😃

          • It is written by a PhD student of the International and European Studies in the Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA).
I wish there was an English version so you could see it translated.

  4. I can’t wait for the reveal! Let’s hope we will get the Eurovision-requisite number of at least 40 entries :)

  5. I have finished listening to the first three editions of ETSC. Man, what a journey! I must admit I didn’t like ETSC 1 that much, but the following two were just awesome. At the moment ETSC 3 is the closest to my heart. Really good representation of rock music in there. Here’s how I rank the top songs:

    ETSC 1

01 FRANCE (deserved winner, also like her new music)
    02 TURKEY
    03 ICELAND
04 SWEDEN (Robyn’s comeback album is one of my all time favourites)
    05 POLAND
    06 HUNGARY
    07 MALTA
    08 ISRAEL
    09 IRELAND
10 GERMANY (but I still hate them for ”36 Grad”)

ETSC 2 – unfortunately without Polish entry :(

01 BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA (I love ska and the video is hilarious)
    02 SWEDEN
    03 FRANCE
    04 ISRAEL
    05 PORTUGAL
06 UNITED KINGDOM (they were huge in Germany, I still like this song)
    07 LITHUANIA
08 SAN MARINO (this one is decent, she’s better off without Siegel)
    09 SWITZERLAND
    10 LEBANON

    ETSC 3

01 LITHUANIA (Yay for Lithuanian electro! I knew them before, but only English songs)
    02 BELGIUM
    03 DENMARK
    04 ROMANIA
05 ISRAEL (I have a soft spot for the country and obviously they’ve been well represented here)
    06 SERBIA
    07 UNITED KINGDOM
08 ITALY (reminds me of my teenage years when I heard Within Temptation and such)
    09 PORTUGAL
    10 LATVIA

  6. Weeee are the chaaaaampions, my frieeeeend! :D

  7. Congrats! Is this the water polo team and if it is why are they allowed to wear bathrobes? BTW did anybody have any luck finding those Olympiakos speedos?

  8. They are the under-18 team, so it’s better to see them in bathrobes only :-P

  9. Some music:

    LOL :(

  10. So…. I just realized that ETSC sign ups had started, so I just sent an email in the hopes that one of the countries I sent is still available.

  11. The deadline for country and song submission is in two and a half hours, right?
    And the songs’ presentation?

  12. Οur PM is thinking of declaring “the end” of the 8-year greek bailout programme from the island of Ithaca tomorrow (to make the most of the “Odyssey” symbolism).

It’s too bad he feels the need to spoil my memory of a beautiful and very classy place I had the fortune of visiting only last month. It really felt like paradise – I can totally understand why Odysseus was so eager to return :)
