ETSC 9: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! 42 of you have expressed the desire to join the July 2018 edition and a random draw was made! Discover the songs tonight!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 8 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France. The last edition to date was ETSC 8, held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece’s Dimitra Selemidou feat. Phoevos Delivoriás with “O monos ke i moni. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 9 – July 2018” will be officially held in Thessaloniki and as for venue, it’ll be the Music Hall, nicknamed by locals as “Megaron”!

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 43 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now. Someone could not send a song in time, so we move to 41 official entries in this edition and will see if Australia can be featured as a guest song in the interval act since it’s the missing entry!

Here are a few facts about the 41 entries:

  • This is a rather well spread out contest: 20 female vocals / 19 male vocals, plus 2 duets, an almost equal result for once!
  • If I did not make mistakes (but I do every year, sorry!), we have these languages: 19 english, 4 russian, 2 arabic, 2 greek, 1 albanian, 1 armenian, 1 bulgarian, 1 estonian, 1 italian, 1 latvian, 1 macedonian, 1 polish, 1 portuguese, 1 romanian, 1 slovenian, 1 slovakian, 1 spanish, 1 turkish!
  • We only have 1 former esc artist and 3 former NF artists!

People are starting to gather at the Thessaloniki Megaron. Here are the hosts for tonight’s show: Katia Zygouli (model-actress), Nikos Kouris (actor), and Avgoustos Kortó (writer).

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Results will be revealed the following weekend (Saturday or Sunday depending what people like best)! In the meantime, you can do promo your entry in the comment section here. Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. Moreover, you need to send me a city, a hall venue and a host for the next edition if you win!

Good luck everyone!

  1. And her duet with Sakis :
    Composed by Kontopoulos

  2. Sent my personal Top 10 votes (plus those just missing out) onto Morgan and will post once the voting has closed.

  3. Speaking of Tamta, here’s her 2015 attempt. She wanted to enter MAD show that year, but got her proposal too late (Maria Elena was her replacement). Musically, it is great and would have won over the eventual entry any day

  4. Lol I don’t know why this ERT-Tamta business resurfaced in the comments section. As a news item it was reported in early June but I haven’t heard anything about it since. In fact she was quite evasive during the MAD awards, saying that her duet with Mikolas means nothing when it comes to ESC next year. Also I very much doubt Eurovision is on anyone’s mind right now in the middle of what the country is going through.

Important thing to remember is that she is the girlfriend of the Latsis dynasty golden boy who owns Panic Records.

  5. According to InfeGreece, Baglione just anounced that the Nuove Proposte competition of younger talent will split from the main San Remo festival. A new festival called San Remo Giovani will be held in December as a separate contest of 24 artists between the ages of 16 and 36. The two artists that come out on top will then get an automatic ticket to compete in the main event in February.

    • What? Does this mean that the serratas are cut half and will last only 5 hours from now on? Travesty!

      • No it just means another week of endless all night marathons in mid-December :-P

        • I’m totally into endless all night marathons from San Remo any time of the year except mid December that tends to be a social high season here in Helsinki. Then again doing it in mid December sounds so wacko, San Remo and Italian, that I really have to give it a thumbs up 😃

    • What?!
Well, considering there’s a parallel selection going on every year around Italy gathering thousands of newcomers and it only gives two tickets for Sanremo, and the other four are selected on a show where the most important thing is the announcement of the “Big”, it’s a great idea to give them more exposure… on Rai1!
I’m happy that some people in the world care about the importance of music festivals for young artists :) (unlike in my country lol).

  6. Ideal James Bond: Idris Elba.

  7. Dino think Nicholas Pinnock would be a good choice for Bond:

  8. Mermy: How could we overlook a great choice….one that would be very popular in this forum… Henry Cavill as Bond!

  9. We only do this on special ocassions, but a good #legbribeforDonnie warrants it 😃

  10. Mr Donnie Darko is enjoying all the legbribes he collected from the ETSC9.

  11. Can’t wait for the predictions and the results! :)

  12. I really hope sort out my voting mess tonight. I already have top 5 sorted. Too many too good songs will have to settle for zero as this edition is remarkably strong.

  13. Best result of the competing countries without top10 achievement yet:

Cyprus, Moldova, Slovakia and Switzerland 11th
    Hungary and Lebanon 12th
    Armenia 13th
    Lithuania 14th
    Russia 16th
    Belarus 17th
    Slovenia 27th
    Malta 28th
    Bulgaria 29th
    Libya N/A

  14. Under the ever watchful eye of President Lukashenko the Belarusian top 10 was formed and has been submitted.

  15. Today investigators moved to arrest Sirusho’s husband’s father – Armenia’s former President Robert Kocharian after filing criminal charges against him stemming from a deadly 2008 crackdown on opposition protesters in Yerevan which was ordered by him.
One of the satyrical newspapers posted this illustration tytled “Vuy Aman” :))

  16. 🇸🇪 Sweden has voted 🇸🇪

  17. Dutch promo material: Fantasia Cromatica by the great composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zHWp9nEL0s

  18. Don’t forget to vote for Finland.

  19. 24h left to vote and less than 10 voters to go, mostly people who are faithful ETSC participants so I have no doubts most will vote :)
