ETSC 9: Get to know the songs!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! 42 of you have expressed the desire to join the July 2018 edition and a random draw was made! Discover the songs tonight!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 8 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France. The last edition to date was ETSC 8, held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece’s Dimitra Selemidou feat. Phoevos Delivoriás with “O monos ke i moni. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 9 – July 2018” will be officially held in Thessaloniki and as for venue, it’ll be the Music Hall, nicknamed by locals as “Megaron”!

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 43 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now. Someone could not send a song in time, so we move to 41 official entries in this edition and will see if Australia can be featured as a guest song in the interval act since it’s the missing entry!

Here are a few facts about the 41 entries:

  • This is a rather well spread out contest: 20 female vocals / 19 male vocals, plus 2 duets, an almost equal result for once!
  • If I did not make mistakes (but I do every year, sorry!), we have these languages: 19 english, 4 russian, 2 arabic, 2 greek, 1 albanian, 1 armenian, 1 bulgarian, 1 estonian, 1 italian, 1 latvian, 1 macedonian, 1 polish, 1 portuguese, 1 romanian, 1 slovenian, 1 slovakian, 1 spanish, 1 turkish!
  • We only have 1 former esc artist and 3 former NF artists!

People are starting to gather at the Thessaloniki Megaron. Here are the hosts for tonight’s show: Katia Zygouli (model-actress), Nikos Kouris (actor), and Avgoustos Kortó (writer).

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

  1. The Dutch headquarters is Geert Mak.

  6. #LTU#🇱🇹
Fashion icons of the electronic stage.

The amazing charisma, the plastique, the hypnotic electronics and surreal costumes immediately made their appearances a phenomenon. The experiments with sounds, dances and fashion by this duo of a computer alchemist and a singer with an extraterrestrial, soulful vocal are so seductive and so unpredictable that you lose the sense of ground. It’s said they sound like «the music of the future». «Vogue» and «L’Officiel» magazines give them merit as style icons; they received M.A.M.A. music award as №1 electronic band in Lithuania, and their song «Як ти й сказав» is sung by the entire audience in every venue in Ukraine.

Beissoul & Einius are cranks from Vilnius, from head to toe they are art & soul. They are aliens and healers from the video film called «LION». They are the authors of a mini album called «Chamillion», which inspired the «FumParFum» company to create an eponymous perfume. Also, the famous Ukrainian designer Elena Burenina created one of her collections «Chamillion» being inspired by Beissoul & Einius music.

At the beginning of 2017 the duo presented its very own fashion collection Spring/Fall 2017 called «Sharp Sabotage», which includes costumes made of glass. Their show at the awards ceremony of M.A.M.A. Awards was called a «fashion show from out of this planet» and «an evolution of a combination of music, movement and material». Part of the show was the joint performance of B&E and Gaspar, the member of a controversial band Kazaky. Beissoul & Einius were the first performers in the world to create their own collection of clothes and to perform their own music in it.

Beissoul & Einius second avant garde fashion collection «The Power Of Being An Alien» Spring/Fall 2018 was showcased at the end of 2017 within their «Electrofashion Show» in Lithuania. 20 unique costumes made by their own hands became the presentation of images of the people of the future – warriors antagonizing the system, commonplace and boredom by means of their unusual outfits. «Electrofashion Show» became the face of the unique electrofashion genre creating by B&E, the avant garde movement of music and fashion, the ode to a human being, the fantasy and freedom of the latter.

Hold your breath and enjoy the continuation of the electrofashion story of the second Beissoul & Einius long play «#asecretcontract», released in spring 2017, it should be done live. Beissoul & Einius performances will, undoubtedly, become one of the most magnetic live shows you’ve ever seen.

  7. Maybe Matiz writes his own music and one of the most loved artists in Turkey so we are proud to have selected him🤗

YouTube provides English lyrics for the song…His latest album “Maya” gets its name from his mom and his album is inspired by music of Anatolia❤️

Now back to songs revealed after I went to bed.Good luck to all!🌼

  8. Since Sirusho doesn’t need presentation I think that Sebu Simonian does. Sebu is a songwriter-vocalist of Capital Cities who also acts ceperately performing own songs and folk covers. He was the coauthor of Tamar Kaprelian’s “Poison” which unfortunately didn’t qualify for final in the national selection though audio version was the hot faviorite to represent Armenia in Lisbon. For a long time wanted to submit Kangaroo Court to online contests but unfortunately the queue was to long so Vuy Aman is a compensation for Sebu.

  9. It is very pleasant to see hot guys on board your flight ✈👌🏽

  10. Lyrics of Romanian entry

Blinded by the look she gave to me
Or the way that she pretends
Lost me when she tried to lie again
Trust me this is how it ends

    (Repeat once)

  11. 🇬🇧 Press release #1 🇬🇧

    Presenting our song

“When In Disgrace With Fortune And Men’s Eyes (Sonnet 29)” is a song included in Rufus Wainwright‘s album ‘Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets’, a collection of nine Shakespeare sonnets performed by actors and musicians.

Welch joins the likes of Helena Bonham Carter, Carrie Fisher and William Shatner on the record, released to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Speaking of the project, Wainwright said: “For me, recording this album has been a marriage made in heaven, as it combines my love of classical music with my love of pop music. It’s literally historically fun.”

  12. I know the German band, who were my favourites in the 2013 NF. :) <3

  13. Andy is out too, right? :(

  14. I love the moment when I discover my 12 or my 10 pts in the line-up.
But at the same time hate it when I realize that several songs that I like will have to be left behind.

  15. 2nd listening complete. 19 songs have been sorted out.

  16. The Dutch band Femme Vanille is from Utrecht. It consists of:

    Thijs Bastiaans – Drums
    Erik Brouwer – Keys
    Jesse Buitenhuis – Guitar
    Karindra Perrier – Vocals, songwriting
Thijs Van Gemert – Bass guitar

The song “Another Time” is the title track of their second album (I think), released in 2016. They have previously released an album called 40° 51′ 10″ N, 73° 56′ 18″ W in 2013.

  17. How do you rank 40 songs?? :)
I’ll create 4 groups of 10 and, on a first listening, I’ll focus on the 10 songs in each group.

  18. I am going through the songs while driving. Is there a playlist available? Have I missed much? I have so little time to be around here these days.

  19. On Ermo: they’re a band from Braga (Northern Portugal). They perform wearing the headgear you can see in the postcard. They are António da Costa and Bernardo Barbosa. “Vem nadar ao mar que enterra” (Come swim in the sea that buries) was released last year as part of the album “Lo-Fi Moda”:

  20. I’m now listening to a song that will be high on Morgan’s ranking. :P

  21. The line-up for this edition looks very strong indeed, with some lovely summary tunes as well some more unique songs thrown in the mix. Looking at the different entries I did know quite a few of the artists (but not the songs necessarily), but I also spotted an entry I had considered at one point representing a certain European country. Good luck to that HoD! :D

While listening to all the 41 entries for the first time, I decided to create a handy map for this edition of ETSC for our newbies!

  22. Informercial on Norway:

Dagny Norvoll Sandvik will be 28 next week. She was born in Tromsø and both her parents are musicians. She got her first break when one of her songs was featured in an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”.

And this is the first in the series of leg bribes for Donnie and anyone else who might be interested :-P

  23. Artists I knew in this edition: Otto Dix, the Postcards and Cesare Cremonini (from FdlC/VFoS), Shirusho (from ESC) and the greek and cypriot artists. I also knew Blow from France and had them in my to-do list but with different songs.

  24. Greek entry’s live and more rockish version:

  25. Looked through the songs… Songs I knew: Moldova, UK, Ukraine. One potential 12pointer smiled me. Competition gonna be wild….
