ETSC 9: Discover the Draw!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! 42 of you have expressed the desire to join the July 2018 edition and a random draw was made!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sorts of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past five years. Four years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 8 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark; the 7th edition was held in July 2017 and was won again by France. The last edition to date was ETSC 8, held in August 2017, and it was the first one that went “blind”, meaning people did not know who sent what. It crowned Greece’s Dimitra Selemidou feat. Phoevos Delivoriás with “O monos ke i moni. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 9 – July 2018” will be officially held in Thessaloniki and as for venue, it’ll be the Music Hall, nicknamed by locals as “Megaron”! The logo for it is inspired by the winner again:

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 42 people in. Songs will be revealed later tonight. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

Does the draw really matter? Maybe so, after all #1 and #12 spots both got Top 3 in the first two editions! In ETSC 1 France won going as #12 while Norway was runner-up going as #1. In ETSC 2 the United-Kingdom went as #12 to achieve second place and Bosnia & Herezgovina finished 3rd going first! Last edition, draw #1 confirmed with a third second place (Norway ETSC 1, Sweden in ETSC 5 and Netherlands in ETSC 7), while Italy finished third at draw… #11! Close but not quite! But in an online game, people get to listen multiple times to the songs, and in any order they want. So it’s quite possible to say that the draw is more of a gimmick than a true influence on the results.

So, here’s the draw:

1  Russia
2  Norway
3  Czech Republic
4  Slovenia
5  Ireland
6  Ukraine
7  Estonia
8  Austria

  1. “However, since this is a blind edition, knowing the draw means knowing the countries that will participate! So, here’s the draw”

    ?
    :p

  2. So, we will get to see the running order being revealed one by one and then at 10 pm CET the songs per se?

  3. omg, Pavard is streaping off on the bus! :P

  4. We’re performing from #36?Most people will be dead by then.lol

  5. I will post the postcard picture and the infos on entries (languages, vocals…) at 8PM, reveal starts at 10PM (both CET)

    • Sorry for being a nuisance, but why do we need 2 hours to let that info sink in?

      • Because I too have a life?

      • Unlike, well, anyone else, who can come and go, doing these mean sitting down, doing all articles, postcards, excels, links for the full hours… so yes, either I STOP it all together, either i do it in hours I can actually do it…

        • Ok no need to be like that, I just wondered Morgan. I know you are busy and stuff, I am too and that’s why I wondered, but there is no need in overreacting. You might be stressed so sorry for asking. I just wanted to see the reveal that’s all. I will not be here at that hour, but I hope it turns out great :)

Not everything comes from a place of hate you know.

          • well on ET you never know, I was alreaady told to quiet down on celebrating for football because it made me sound like a Brexiter… So I’m not in the best mood, and the way you started “sorry to be a nuisance but” sounded like you were trying to look for trouble…

            • I am a bit tired that’s all and I never do look for trouble and you know this Morgan! I just wanted to see the reveal that’s all ;_; Congratz to the win btw I never did congratulate! :D
and you shouldn’t really care that much of what people thinks btw

            • Don’t worry about it! Try to stay if you can! If not, it’s ok, the point is that we enjoy the songs after all! I’ll try to make it a more suitable for all time for the results, as I foten ask people what suits them most: of course since it’s long it’s better on the weekend but a lot of us go out too!

    • Yes but if you give away names people find them out before the actual reveal

  6. 8th? That’s a prime position :D

  7. So #11 it is!
    It rings a bell actually… I think I’ve been in #11 before… :)

  8. Now the whole world knows how long it takes from Roissy CDG airport to Paris downtown rofl

French commentators: “insane, the crowd is filming the bus, the players are filming the crowd and we’re filming it all… who’s really watching?”

  9. #18. Once again middle of the pack

  10. And welcome Jerry and Lebanon!

  11. So I am the belly button🙂

  12. 41 of 42 and the reveal at 10 pm? You guys gonna be dead when I hit the stage D:

But yay matched up the 42!

  13. Debuts/Returns
    -Libya
    -Romania
    -Slovenia
    -FYROM
    -Moldova
    -Azerbaijan
    -Tunisia

    Withdrawing
    -Serbia
    -Croatia
    -Bosnia and Herzegovina
    -Montenegro
    -Egypt
    -Hungary
    -Morocco

If you tell me that most of Yugoslavia was missing except the unlikely Slovenia and FYROM, I wouldn’t believe you. I always thought Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia were really hot countries here! :o
The Romanian duo does return though, replacing Hungary, and North Africa’s made only by non-immediate returnees

  14. “I always thought Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia were really hot countries here!”

    Hear, hear :(

  15. I’m off for the moment. I’ll be back for the songs :)

  16. Oh seems my entry’s first. I feel the song might be a good show opener. Or perhaps it won’t. Only one way to find out :D

  17. #16, not bad, only the 2nd time when I’m in the 1st half of the draw and I’m glad my song won’t be revealed too late in the night. :P

I’ll be here when the reveal starts, I hope to see many others too although it’s quite late (for me the hour suits as I’ll have time to finish my bets :P).

  18. Just discovered that the Danish ETSC 5 contestant CTM has released a new album. One of the songs features Dawda Jobarteh (FdlC 17 Gambia):
