ETSC 8 – Prediction Game

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! 42 of you entered for the August 2017 edition and the voting went on for ten days! The results are coming this Friday!

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 42 people in. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. You can click on the picture below to listen to the songs again:

Results will come in shortly. In the meantime, we get to gossip and predict, and discuss songs more openly as nothing more is at stake. And I drop hints!

Now time for the prediction game! It was first started in ETSC 4 “hint” article and back then I wrote this: “We can play a guessing game, people wishing to participate can post a “prediction” top 10 and I’ll award points based on the countries that are in the actual top 10 and predicted in yours accorddingly. I wont reveal the results until after the voting and winner is announced, but we’d get an extra side bet to care about ;)” In the end, a good 15 people or so played and Donnie was the winner, though no one predicted Austria to win or France to be runner-up. The prediction game was again open for ETSC 5, which was won by Nick P!

However the game took a very serious turn in ETSC 6, where I put it all in an excel to keep track of everyone’s prediction and the overall predicted results. This edition was won by a landslide by Donnie! In that edition, 8/10 were predicted correctly, with the full Top 5 predicted right (though in almost reverse order); two countries were even predicted at the right place too! Two mistakes, the “infamous” Greece and Norway being the two “overestimated” countries each time. They did come close to our Top 10! Bosnia and Estonia were predicted a bit lower, 15th and 16th, than their final result. So don’t underestimate all genre of music has its place in ETSC Top 10!

We reprised in ETSC 7. This is what we got:

PREDICTED TOP TEN CORRECT TOP TEN
1  France (1) 1   France (1)
2 Denmark (4) 2  Netherlands (5)
3  Belgium (8) 3  Italy (13)
4  Sweden (5) 4  Denmark (2)
5  Netherlands (2) 5   Sweden (4)
6  Serbia (6) 6  Serbia (6)
7 Azerbaijan (21) 7  Finland (17)
8  Spain (14) 8  Belgium (3)
9  UK (16) 9  Israel (11)
10  Lebanon (12) 10  Norway (14)

This prediction game was won by a new winner: Dimitris! As a collective, we didot as good as ETSC 6: we only got 6 right, with even a song in the Top 3 missing! One predicted song as low as 21st and one song predicted only 17th finally making it! Let’s do it again. Until the reveal begin, you can put a top 10 prediction in order (since most people predict the same 8 or so songs, it would be better to have an order so that thanks to mathematics, we do get someone who was “closer” to the final results). However, there are a few specific rules:

  • There is an extra 100pts if you guess ALL 10 songs right whatever the order! This was already the case in ETSC 6 which no one got!
  • There is an extra 100pts if you guess AT LEAST 10 HoD right!

I’ll award points accordingly and announce the winner along with the revealing of ETSC 9 logo! If you feel like revealing predictions on the comment section is too much info, you can do it by email. However, as voting is closed, you dont need to worry affecting votes, just maybe people’s interpretation of your predictions (but we’re all esc fans and know predictions aren’t our own rankings!) This is a second crown to grab, good luck everyone!

  6. So sorry I miss the results. I have to give key note speech and participate in panel saturday mid morning outside Helsinki and have to go bed early. The project is best ever, but most time consuming.

  7. I just saw that there will only be 7 episodes of GOT this year 😢 And the final one is this Sunday! Where are my three extra episodes????!!! 😲

  8. Q for Morgan,
Are the HoDs behind the entries more or less what expected to be or are there any huge surprises? :)

    …or am I asking for too much? :P :D

    • I think a lot of it makes sense. But it’s very hard for me to say, when I got people’s country and then songs, it all made sense to me. I can’t imagine it otherwise. However I can reveal that so far no one got the extra bonus, so maybe it’s more complicated than I thought to connect the right dot. A simple mistake and the whole picture is blurred!

      • More complicated that I thought…

Hmmm that can only be very interesting to me. the suspence is growing for tonight!
        It will be tonight, right?

      • Exactly! It’s enough to get some wrong and because of those mistakes you make others, it’s like a chain reaction. :p

  9. Surprisingly a good fanbased top, was expecting Ukraine to flop and Georgia to be last and russia being first, but was proven wrong in all accounts!

  10. That stupid chrome is acting up again It won’t let me open my notifications by clicking on the orange point on the bell at the up right corner of my screen. Grrrr

    • Well it is always acting up for me, cant click it when I am in an article, but can when it’s in the homepage etc. I use Firefox. I have simply given up in fixing it, it is probably a wordpress problem :P

  11. Here’s my pathetic attempt at un-masking some of the least mentioned HoD’s taking part in this edition. I have no reasoning behind it, other than you are all such lovely folk and I wanted to mention you!
Sorry guys…….I know it’s wild, you can throw me to the wolves later! 😂

     Czech Republic Cyphermusic (Tristian)
     United-Kingdom Caolán
     Latvia Bay
     Switzerland Andy
     Hungary Ellie
     Serbia William

     Germany Daniel
     Slovakia Lars
     Malta Nick

  12. Song predictions – the usual suspects, quoting Michos; personally, I’ll end up somewhere on the right hand side of the board.

    HoD predictions – 100% fun!

  13. Finland
    UK
    Italy
    Iceland
    France
