ETSC 8: Discover the Draw!

ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! Each one of you can represent an European country and get to send a song and then vote in a fake Eurovision! 43 of you entered for the August 2017 edition and a random draw will be made soon! Discover the draw as soon as it’s released!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sort of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past four years. Three years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

We’ve therefore had 7 editions of ETSC, two in 2014: July 2014 and August 2014, both won by France; the third edition was held in July 2015 and won by the United-Kingdom; the fourth edition was held in Augusut 2015 and was won by Austria; the fifth edition was held in July 2016 and was won by Israel; the sixth edition was held in August 2016 and won by Denmark. Last month, the 7th edition took place and crowned France’s Juliette Armanet with “L’Amour En Solitaire. For more information, you can discover our new page dedicated to the contest, with its history, all songs participating and the rankings here. You can also find it by clicking on the “Specials” section of the site, in the top menu in the red box, just under the site’s name. “ETSC 8 – August 2017” will be officially held in Paris and as for venue, it’ll be the Palais des Sports! The logo for it is inspired by the winner again:

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 43 people in. Songs will be revealed Saturday night. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can request to see their own postcards for now.

Does the draw really matter? Maybe so, after all #1 and #12 spots both got Top 3 in the first two editions! In ETSC 1 France won going as #12 while Norway was runner-up going as #1. In ETSC 2 the United-Kingdom went as #12 to achieve second place and Bosnia & Herezgovina finished 3rd going first! Last edition, draw #1 confirmed with a third second place (Norway ETSC 1, Sweden in ETSC 5 and Netherlands in ETSC 7), while Italy finished third at draw… #11! Close but not quite! But in an online game, people get to listen multiple times to the songs, and in any order they want. So it’s quite possible to say that the draw is more of a gimmick than a true influence on the results.

However, since this is a blind edition, knowing the draw means knowing the countries that will participate! So, here’s the draw:

1  Ireland
2  Lithuania
3  Belarus
4  Israel
5  Iceland
6  Bosnia & Herzegovina

  1. Lol. We have no names, we are numbers. I’m Number 6…….what number are you?

    Anyone spot the reference?

  2. Here we go! Nice to see some comebacks, I kind of missed Latvia. :)

  3. You had a draw party and didn’t invite me? :(

But yay I like my place a lot, gracias!

  4. LOL Estonia got the same spot when I used to be Estonia in ETSC6

  5. According to the draw on ETSC7, the podium will be: Portugal, Ireland, The Netherlands.

  6. Let’s see if the draw can help on predicting results.

Here are all the podiums from every ETSC edition. I added the country that occupies that position on ETSC8.

    ETSC1
    1st (#12) Poland
    2nd (#01) Ireland
    3rd (#16) Armenia

    ETSC2
    1st (#27) Serbia
    2d (#12) Poland
    3rd (#01) Ireland

    ETSC3
    1st (#31) France
    2nd (#17) Cyprus
    3rd (#28) Estonia

    ETSC4
    1st (#3) Belarus
    2nd (#35) Croatia
    3rd (#29) Romania

    ETSC5
    1st (#10) Turkey
    2nd (#1) Ireland
    3rd (#22) Finland

    ETSC6
    1st (#19) Austria
    2nd (#08) Morocco
    3rd (#16) Armenia

    ETSC7
    1st (#15) Portugal
    2nd (#1) Ireland
    3rd (#11) The Netherlands

Will this predict that Ireland (3 times on the podium), Poland and Armenia (both twice) will do pretty good?

  7. Oh my, Quentin Bigot! :P <3

  8. Watching the World Championship,i realise how much i really don’t like the London weather.Give me Greek summer heat anytime.

    • It’s very rainy indeed… England is having so far a worse championships: one gold and five 4th place, when France has one bronze and only three 4th places lol

      • It’s all about Mo Farah for them.

        • weird, when you compare to their 2012 Olympics results… they did the same in cycling where they had amazing Olympics and almost never did anything in the World championships…

      • Gt Britain and N.Ireland if you dont mind please Morgan. As far as I’m aware England are not participating at these world championships as they’re not recognised as a sovereign nation…….yet!

        • True! My bad. Since perfidous albion, France usually just says “England” by msitake!

          • You’re forgiven…….frustratingly, there’s nothing more guaranteed to annoy the Scots, Welsh and N.Irish than when the red, white and blue of the union flag gets referred to as “england” and sadly it’s a global (and domestic) laziness, or ignorance.
I even had to reprimand an English relative one time when he referred to one of the Olympics as “England have just won 3 Gold medals this morning”…….to which I reminded him England are not represented but if he wanted to be specific, then to correct him “2 Golds were won by Scotland and 1 Gold was won by Wales”.

            • Im annoyed when it says GB&NI instead of UK, I mean they’re not legally the same things since it’s different sport federation, but in the real world, they’re the same people

            • Different thing again I’m afraid, lol. GB and NI is not the same as UK. United Kingdom only refers to the 2 “once equal” Kingdoms of Scotland and England in union. Britain is ONLY England and Wales. Great Britain is England, Wales and Scotland which of course is also the geographical term for the main island. Wales is a principality, and N.Ireland is a province. The full title is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Headache yet? 😂

Here, try this one……this explains it quite funnily.

            • Well sure, on a legal term, but still when people say “UK” it’s short for “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” so saying “Great Britain and Northern Ireland” instead of “United-Kingdom” is nit picking imo.

            • But legally it’s correct, like it or not, lol. But as you fell into the trap, you shortened even UK into just one constituent nation, England.

            • I like it simple, we aint the Helvetic Confederation or the Russian Federation. We’re plain old France :p

            • I like it simple too…….. you’re lucky. Vive la France!

            • Ok Mr Webmaster, I have to get some sleep, I’m up early and I’m out all day tomorrow (today).

              Oidhche mhath Morgan (Scot’s Gaelic)
              Oíche mhaith Morgan (Irish Gaeilge)
              Nos da Morgan (Welsh)
              Nos dha Morgan (Cornish)

……..or just plain old Good Night Morgan!

            • I’ve just emailed you btw

            • “bonne nuit” would have worked too :o

            • I thought you might have wanted me to respond in Breton…… I dont know Breton.

            • the French nationalism is very odd: but here Paris dominates the whole country and has killed all regional languages, which are NOT recognized in any way (France has not ratified Europe’s treaty on local dialects and languages!!)

            • For real? London tried the same for 300 years, they nearly succeeded in eradicating the Celtic languages, but we’re fighting back. Killing off these languages is appalling, we dont know what discoveries are around the corner that would open our minds to more of life on earth……think Rosetta Stone.

            • Paris won. The folklore is now in the cuisine, traditions, everything, but not in the language! havent you noticed there are almost no accents even in France-French? only a bit in the south (east and west)… Bretons dont speak with an accent at all :o

            • Yes I had noticed……… and very sad for those minor languages, but you’re right about the current folklore. What I find strange in France is if they’re determined to keep the other languages obscure, can they not see their hypocrisy over Americanisms and the use of English words in everyday French?

  9. Hint: If you look at the first half of the draw, by Ireland…

    …then the second, by Denmark…

You can kind of ubicate my entry in that range :D

  10. Off topic: Poor Gesa Felicitas Krause. Such bad luck being broght to the ground by a competitor and then being knocked against the head by sb else’s knee and being stepped onto the ankle by another competitor. I am very proud that the finished the race and came a heroic 9th, surpassing so many others. It also shows in what a fantastic shape she was. She said before the race that she was going for a medal again. She tried to keep composure during the interview after the race but finally burst into tears.
You might suspect by now that GFK is my favourite German athlete. :)

  11. I have only had half an eye on the championships. Must admit I’m kind of bored with athletics…

  12. Selena gave us the task to seal the envelopes with the names of the countries each HoD will represent. You can rest assured that we didn’t take a peek.lol:

  13. Ah, it’s almost time! I’m feeling oddly confident in my chances, for once. Hopefully all of you are as well. ˆ-ˆ

  14. This blackout situation is getting on my nerves.

Galf ym ni ruoloc eno nath erom s’ereht.

  15. Listening to “Bohemian Rhapsody” atm. Still a timeless masterpiece.

  16. Beware!Things may be not like what they appear to be in this edition:

  17. My flag contains one or more of the following:
    Red, white, blue. :O

  18. US kids trying Greek food with vegetables:

  19. Has anyone watched The Invisible Guest (Spanish movie)

Would you please suggest something similar to that?
