You can check out more abut San Remo on the contest’s Wikipedia page. The Italian contest was created long ago, before the Eurovision Song Contest, of which it actually was an inspiration. When Italy withdrew from our beloved contest, San Remo kept going strong. When they returned in 2011, they have always changed their ways of dealing between SR and the ESC. In 2011 they sent the winner of the “newcomer” category. In 2012 or 2014 they picked a singer from SR but with a different song for Eurovision. This year, it finally stated that “the winner would be offered to go to the contest” which therefore led it to this nomination. It gave the contest both the OGAE and the TEKO winner before the contest, where Italy finnished 6th. This is Italy’s second Frida this year! Congratulations!
