ET Awards 2017: Most Overrated!

Eurovision 2017 – This year we resume the “Eurovision Times Awards” to give prizes (the Fridas) for the best in every category! And you get to vote! Today, we resume the polls with the two categories focused on unfair results!

2017 will be the fifth year for Eurovision Times to organize a new contest (you can check 2013’s results here, the 2014’s ones here, the 2015’s ones here and the 2016’s ones here). As with the past few years, our blog hosts now two contests: TEKO which takes place before the contest and the “Eurovision Times Awards” after the contest. The principle of the ET Awards is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners. The winners recieve an imaginary trophee, entitled the Fridas in hommage to Frida Boccara, the French Eurovision winner in 1969 with “Un jour, un enfant“.

The fifteenth award is in the “Result” category and it’s “Most Overrated”. Here are the results of the recommendations made by the regular users of Eurovision Times in this category:

  • 14 Australia
  • 10 Romania
  • 7 Bulgaria
  • 6 Croatia
  • 5 Moldova
  • 4 Sweden
  • 3 Italy
  • 2 Belgium
  • 2 Netherlands
  • 2 Portugal
  • 1 Austria
  • 1 Cyprus
  • 1 Denmark
  • 1 Norway
  • 1 United-Kingdom

However, it’s down to the staff of Eurovision Times to choose the official nominees. But it’s up to you to vote in our poll below which entry was the most overrated this year! You need to click on the country’s name to be redirected to the video of the song. The nominees in alphabetical order are:

Rules: the polls will be open for a week. At the end of the week, an article will announce the winner of the category but not the detailed results. The full results will however be given to you once all polls are closed so that you don’t get influenced (we never know) in your following votes. Every IP gets only one vote, please do not cheat, do take in consideration to watch very carefully the videos before voting and do not vote necessarly for your favorite song but vote regarding to the category. Of course, it’s pointless to vote only for your own country unless you’re really certain it should win. May the best win!

  1. both Lynn and I love Bulgaria, and a song that did get 2nd in both jury and televote didn’t deserve this nod over two jury pets and three televote “gimmick” favorite

  2. Very hard decision between Sweden’s very limited vocal range and Australia’s snooze fest.

  3. Australia was pretty low in the televotes, wasn’t it? But I think Australia shouldn’t have been in the final to begin with. Sweden on the other hand, even though I am not fond of the song or singer, was a deserved qualifier imo.

  4. Oh my, all 5 are so deservingly nominated! :)

  5. This is a very easy vote for Australia. I can’t believe how their entries have so rapidly descended in quality from one year to the next. The first was by far the best one and the only one who really deserved the placing it got. It was also relatively the one least helped by the juries (at least compared to the other two).

My nominees were Bulgaria, Australia and Norway.

    • Personally, I believe the Australian debut is their best entry so far too

    • My favorite is Sound of Silence by far.

      • Really? I thought they went very OTT with that. It also had “calculated to win Eurovision” written all over it (like Mans but thankfully not with the same result).

        • I didn’t want it to win last year but i think it really worked on stage.Perfect staging highlighting modern peoples isolation in the digital era.

          • Yes. Those “Facetime” lyrics were definitely no coincidence, even though the EBU pretended they were fine. On the other hand sitting on a plinth covered with glitter in a dress that would be too much even at the oscars was going a bit overboard – Robin this year got derided for much less. Also so much shouting and vocal show-off. Subtlety was definitely not one of this entry’s virtues.

  6. 1. AUS
    2. ROU
    3. HRV
    4. SWE
    5. MDA
My vote goes of course to Australia, one of the most unfair jury boosts over the years together with AUS 16 and SWE 15.

  7. Moldova is not overrated at all imo, but I see your arguments.

Voting for Croatia because how in the holy that get enough to place left is a mystery

  8. Australia!

  9. Sweden, because of the lack of musical and lyrical substance. Most of the other Swedish entries have had some musical qualities that are missing here.

I think the Australian song was OK, but not so much more than that. Doesn’t really leave a lasting impression.

As for Moldova: It’s not something that really appeals to me, but I can understand why many people liked it. It has a good and infective energy :-)

  10. And then there is Romania: I have to admit I quite enjoyed it. The yodeling definitely put a smile on my face. Looked upon as a piece of music competing in a song contest, it is not a good entry though.

  11. Another easy vote for me, Australia, but I believe Romania and Sweden might be a contender for this win as well.

  12. That hateful and pretentious plastic act from Sweden without a doubt. I mean, I do dislike yodeling as much as I dislike eating fish and I wouldn’t enjoy eating a trout even if it was served at the spring of the Buna at the Blagaj Tekke where supposedly the best trout in the world is served. It’s exactly the same with yodeling … However my problem with Sweden 2017 is that while I sort of enjoy the song itself, I totally detest the lyrics and the way it was performed. It’s like food I can enjoy served the wrong way and a perfect example of what has gone wrong in the world lately imo. It’s all about perfect surfaces and dissimulating a void.

  13. Australia and Sweden win this award by far! Voted for Australia, because the live vocals and the stage presentation managed to be worse than those of Sweden 17.

  14. Sweden.

  15. Voted twice for Moldova and Croatia!

  16. Also couldn’t leave unnoticed Australia!

  17. I disagree about Sweden . End up loving it 😋

  18. Easy vote here, it’s Croatia for me, my last place pre-contest and 2nd last after the show (they managed to beat San Marino thanks to the great live singing). I agree with all the other nominees too, they were indeed quite overrated.

  19. Worst performance for my nominations so far, only 1/3 made it. I’m still vicious about Cyprus’ secondhand everything getting through semi-final 1, but I can live. The Netherlands was always a stretch, but I think I was still furious at the ugly graphics when I nominated it. Otherwise, 11th was within the acceptable margins.

Now then, should I really waste time and slate Australia for that terrible performance of a weak song that had no business being on any side of 15th in a semi-final, yet got inflated enough by juries to move into the final and then over perform there? I won’t, and I’ll just give it my vote. :)
