Eurovision 2017 Rehearsals: Day 3

Eurovision 2017 – With two weeks to go to the contest, daily rehearsals start tomorrow and of course the Eurovision Times will do its best to cover them; here’s for the first rehearsals to the first half of semifinal 1: pics and vids will be officially released and we get to discuss, debate, analyze, predict…

So this is how it’ll work for the next 10 days or so: we will resume the system from the last two years. There is an article for the day’s rehearsals published in the morning (or the night before) with the calendar (this year, the new style and format of the official site don’t seem to help look for rehearsals). You can comment all day on it, based on all the info you can gather around and as soon as I can, I’ll get working on a recap article with links to pictures, videos, etc. However, I do work (even if both 1st of May and 8th of May are days off in France) so I’ll do that at the latest in the evening, sooner if possible, depending. Usually, the girls are down there and as you know, this year ET did not get a pass, so they’ll be following from here and will help publishing any news article.

So we’re all counting on you guys to post in the comment section all the links you find and discuss all material out there. Hope it works out great for everyone, and already a big cheers to all the sites who will post their own made materials.

Here’s tomorrow’s schedule: Semifinal 2 – Half 1 – First rehearsal

  •  09:00-09:30 Serbia First rehearsal
  •  09:40-10:10 Austria First rehearsal
  •  10:20-10:50 F.Y.R. Macedonia First rehearsal
  •  11:00-11:30 Malta First rehearsal
  •  11:10-11:30 Serbia Press Meet & Greet
  •  11:50-12:10 Austria Press Meet & Greet
  •  12:30-12:50 F.Y.R. Macedonia Press Meet & Greet
  •  12:40-13:10 Romania First rehearsal
  •  13:10-13:30 Malta Press Meet & Greet
  •  13:20-13:50 Netherlands First rehearsal
  •  14:00-14:30 Hungary First rehearsal
  •  14:50-15:10 Romania Press Meet & Greet
  •  15:00-15:30 Denmark First rehearsal
  •  15:30-15:50 Netherlands Press Meet & Greet
  •  15:40-16:10 Ireland First rehearsal
  •  16:20-16:40 Hungary Press Meet & Greet
  •  17:10-17:30 Denmark Press Meet & Greet
  •  17:55-18:15 Ireland Press Meet & Greet

There will therefore be 9 countries getting their first taste of the stage and first impression from it. The first rehearsal is 30 minutes long.

This is how it works. As usual, in first go, countries rarely reveal everything from their staging, definitely not the clothes. But the fans get an idea of what direction the performance is heading towards. This is mostly a rehearsal for delegations: in-ear monitoring, checking the dressing room, etc. Then the delegations check the recordings and adjust if necessarily. After this, they work on the make-up, and then the Press Meet & Greet takes place.

Usually, the official site publishes photo sets from rehearsals and a short clip (around 90 seconds) about the artist’s impressions around 40 minutes later. Last year it was not possible for any fan sites to record anything else, so you’ll have to just read what everyone there thought about it without seeing more with your own eyes (and of course hear with your own ears).

  1. PB reports that Anja’s outfit looks like fluttering puff pastry …

    • She is nominated for Barbra Dex award already. This combined with screaming is stuff that unforgettable ESC moments are made of too. Go Anja!

    • Its not her stage costume

      • I certainly hope so. :)

      • Off-topic: I have just won FdlC 19 with this and I think that you approve:

        • Two in a row ? Congratulations that must be a first ! I ll check the song later. I plan to bring back my withdrawn belgian entry as well since it was never revealed.

        • omg it’s Nicolas Fraissinet ! :D Just saw it, couldn’t see it when I was answering as I was on my phone :)
“Levez-toi” is among my all time favourite nf entries and this is very beautiful as well – a little biased but it would be my 12p without hearing the rest I love him !

          • Same here, and as Michos (who awarded 12 pts) said, Switzerland should select him internally for ESC asap! :) My favorite Fraissinet song is “Je regarde la mer”, which was my first choice for FdlC, but alas the live performance vanished from YT a week before the submission deadline. Now I think that I was lucky because the line-up was very contemplative and “Je regarde la mer” would not have stood out the way frolic “Fantôme” did. :)

  2. Hot air balloon for Ireland. Lol

  3. Hungary : It is what we saw and heard in A Dal. If one liked that they will be satisfied if they didnt nothing done here will change their mind. It is consistent and does stand out though.

  4. Denmark : Simple as it should be on stage, nice colour palette in the background and Anja has no problem to own the stage. Vocally, I mean, she is the best female solo vocalist this year so I would not expect anything less. Probably best rehearsal today so far. Its such a boost for the contest as a whole to feature artists with Anja’s talent, passion and extroverted stage charisma.

  5. I mean he is just adorable :

  6. Denmark: I am sure she is not planning to wear that outfit but light blue and pink don’t go together…anyway. Anja is still screaming the hell out of her while the backing vocalists ”refuse” to step forward….

Ireland: Effective backdrop but Brendan isn’t the best vocalist/charismatic singer.

Honestly, this SF is boring as hell. Why I am bothering with it?

  7. Hungary: A true gem. By far the best song and package.

  8. Hungary has the best ethnic song this year…Effortlessly!!!
    Not calculated,candid,true gem 💎
    He sounds like studio version

  9. Not a bad start. I like the backdrop but not sure on the balloon atp.

  10. omg Hungary is just fantastic!!! <3

  11. After 27 rehearsals, Finland and Hungary impressed me the most; followed by, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Oh my, semi 2 is really weak :(

  12. Ireland : The air baloon may be a bit too much but this the most visually stunning act we ve seen yet. The backdrop is just so artsy and blends so well with the mellow mood of the song. Brendan seems to be fine vocally in the clip we saw and he just has the charm to get the votes imo. I can really see this through.

  13. Overall : Ireland, Denmark and The Netherlands really stood out for me. Some very strong rehearsals there. Austria and Nathan also offer bucketloads of charm.
    Hungary was also good.
Claudia delivered her best but nothing top exciting.

The other 3 were dissapointing – Serbia and FYR Macedonia need vocal work and some presentation refinement. Romania is hopeless in terms of aesthetics but it will do very well with televoting unfortunately…Not good for esc’s image as a whole this act though..

    • Compliation of stand outs in all rehersals done so far in order of appearance : Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland.

Waiting for Bulgaria now. Although I suspect a Blanche treatment for Kristian if my gut feeling about this year’s press coverage is correct..

  14. Romania has a lot of gimmiks! Walking and not walking gimmiks! They will attract a lot of televotes! My niece is among their guaranteed voters :D

  15. I am not joining the whole rehearsels thing as I want to be blown away on the night! But if you say that Romania is doing good it’s easily gonna do close to a Poland 2016 in the final.

  16. ESC Today’s daily press poll for today’s rehearsals. Much less polarised than previous days:

    Austria 79
    Romania 72
    Holland 59
    Hungary 39
    Denmark 29
    FYRoM 18
    Ireland 14
    Malta 10
    Serbia 0

My own personal impressions from the snippets is that Ireland, the FYRoM and Serbia sound very bad in these short videos. Holland packs quite a punch even though I don’t like it (but the one on the right should really reconsider the cut of that dress). Malta – another creepy and huge vanity projection. Is that a thing this year? As for Hungary many reports claim he had problems connecting with the camera.

  17. Austria apparently won today’s “press” poll with Romania 2nd and Netherlands 3rd.

    Serbia got the Blanche treatment.

  18. Serbia: It doesn’t look very good,tbh.Shaky vocals,irrelevant dancer.The backdrop is ok.

Austria: I don’t know how i feel about this crescent moon on stage. But then again he’s running on air. He’s so positive and confident i think he’s qualifying.

FUROM: A carcrash. You can’t dance alone when you have zero dancing skills.Shaly vocals.

Malta: Vocally strong but that was to beexpected.Other that that it’s boring.Kudos that they aren’t trying too much but i don’t like the backdrop.

Romania: Painfully kitsch. It will feature as the joke entry of this edition.

The Netherlands: It’s very disney and not really my taste but they’re confident on stage and their harmonies will take them to the final.

Hungary: Finally,an act that doesn’t try too much. It’s what we saw in the NF.Not a really well-thought stage presentation but the emotional power of this will take it to the final.

Denmark: No surprises here.A solid performance.I think she qualifies too.

Ireland: He’s lovely but i can’t warm up to this. The hot-air balloon is kitsch and a bot irrelevant.

  19. Greece losing ground with the betting odds. They must have hated the rehearsal.Romania’s painful kitsch lands them in 7th place, atm.

    • I think it’s the first time in a long time (if not even the first time) when I have my own country in bottom 5 and then we are among the top 10 favourites, lol.
I did like the rehearsal though.
