Latvia: It’s Triana Park to Kyiv!

  1. On Austria: Like some others here I am pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed listening to this song which for sounds like 2017 full stop for once. Not like 2017 (+ ESC) like most songs that aim at being contemporary. I really like Nathan’s voice too and hope that he’ll sound as good live. I don’t need another Triana Park case. 8/12 and suprisingly above Latvia for the moment.

  13. On Slovenia:it’s obvious their voting system is flawed.BQL took almost as many televotes as all of the other finalists combined so a fixed number of points distributed to the songs doesn’t really mirror the wish of Slovenians.

    • Sanremo has the best system, imo.

    • Also, you can say the same thing about the 1-12 system used for the televote in Eurovision. The no.1 song may get double the votes of the 2nd song, but only two points more. And in ESC’s case we never even learn the exact number of televotes that went to each song from each country (presumably because it would open a big can of worms since millions of votes in a large country would be worth exactly the same as hundreds of votes in a small one)

      • Yes but at the end of the day,in esc they’re not given standard televoting points like here and the possible injustice is leveled out by those 43 televoting results.

        • 12, 10 points etc. are also standard televoting points no? And the difference between 12 and 10 in terms of the total number of given points is only around 3%, whereas in Slovenia the difference between 72 points for no1 and 60 points for no.2 is actually around 5% of the total, so slightly fairer. As for the 43 different televoting results I think they are meant mainly to provide representation of the different musical tastes in every country, rather than to level out injustice.

          • I don’t think they’re comparable.Voting for your favorite song in a national selection is just that.The esc televoting involves different countries,there’s the possible diaspora and regional bias effect etc.Imagine how more heavily pro-poland the UK televoting would be if they were actually counting the number of votes.Non ex Soviet states would take marginal pts if any from certain ex soviet states etc.

      • Or because we would witness the extend of neighbouring and diaspora voting and that would tarnish any kind of legitimacy televoting has left in esc.
        I have insisted for years : publish those televoting figures analytically and let’s see what we deal with.

        E.g. Turkey published their analytical televoting results for the 2010 contest back then in a rear move of such transparency when it comes to televote. Here is the top 10:

        58.474 – Azerbaijan – 12 points
        11.154 – Armenia – 10 points
        10.787 – Germany – 8 points
        6.393 – Georgia – 7 points
        4.716 – Greece – 6 points
        4.627 – Bosnia & Herzegovina – 5 points
        4.225 – France – 4 points
        3.882 – Romania – 3 points
        3.464 – Ukraine – 2 points
        2.779 – Albania – 1 points

        The total number of televotes (for all 24 countries in the final) was about 122.000 votes. Azerbaijan received about 58.000 of those votes or 47.5 % of the vote among 24 participants I repeat.It’s shocking really what we would get if televoting had a proportional magnitude to the points each country gives.The current fixed distribution kind of stops that thankfully. And that’s just one case, who knows what’s going on in the rest of Europe..

        • That is a conundrum I agree. I am all for limiting each number’s permissible votes to 5 down from 20 and no more than 1 vote for each country. Problem is, they don’t care about that because the televotes bring them proceeds – even though in the end they don’t mind overruling their paying costumers through juries.

          • This measure would prove inefficient, especially to tackle diaspora. I have read quite a few reports of multiple sim card voting strategies put on by certain communities in certain countries. It would only scale down the voting numbers as a whole, not their proportional distribution, at least not significantly. And if this voting is any indication, radical changes need to be made to limit the problem, the extend of it is gargantuan.

            I have said it again – same way semi finals are split based on pots made out of countries who tend to vote for each other, implement something similar in televoting. Calculate an average of points each country has given to each other country and ban each country from voting for the country it has given the highest average to (or the top 2 or top 3 of those countries), same way one cannot vote for the country they reside in at the time of the contest. And let this be a dynamic process with the average updated every year. It’s functional, easily implemented and forces people to think out of the box.

            • What you propose makes little sense imo.
              If I understood it right, countries like Russia would have by default 10 countries-voters less while others like San Marino a pool of 42 possible countries that could vote for them?
              And what if a Belarussian wants to vote for the Russian song cause he/she genuinely likes it but is not allowed to?
              What Michos suggested is the only fair way imo

            • First of all it wouldn’t be as dramatic really. Out of all the ex soviets probably only Belarus and maybe Azerbaijan or Armenia would have to prohibit voting against Russia, for the baltics the measure is more likely to apply between them, same for Moldova and Romania and I think Ukraine has a dwindling averag of points towards Russia anyway. Even under the extreme scenario that 5 countries for example were banned from voting for Russia I think they would still do better overall in televoting than San Marino since the 5s 6s and 7s from other countries that would fall under the radar of a possible ban would be enough to boost Russia again.
              Well for the belarussian that genuinely likes the russian song bad luck what can I say – he should blame his copatriots and their voting habits not the solution to the problem.
              As I described what Michos suggested would do little to nothing to solve the problem, especially if its extent around Europe is as severe as the example with the turkish televoting in 2010 shows.

          • Although, this might be the best and maybe fairer system theoretically speaking in practice it will make little effect. Also, you should consider the marketing politics behind televoting. It will not go down well with the mobile companies (lower profits) and therefore EBU will have to decide to either keep it as it is or ban the televoting altogether.

  14. Having heard all the chosen entries so far, I have to say it is shaping up to be one of my least favourite editions. There have been very few songs that really appeal to me, and no entry so far has managed to climb above 8/12 (which means that it a good song).

    • I have to agree. Italy, Finland and France (the latter to a lesser extent) are the only songs that I think are above average; Moldova 17 is vastly improved by its live rendition, whereas Hungary needs to improve theirs.

      • I’m not impressed by the Italian song tbh. I cannot give it more than 6/12. I don’t have anything against it, but it sounds uninspired to me. I don’t like the Moldovan song at all, and the Hungarian one seems disjointed to me.

        But I do like the French song which is at 8/12, and so is the one from Belarus (hope they keep it in their own language). As for Finland, well, I recognize its qualities, but it is not really for me. Too Titanic-like in its feeling perhaps.

        • Indeed, I forgot to add Belarus to the list of above average songs. Italy 17 is pure fun coupled with very witty lyrics. France 17 is not at the same level though, imo. Finland 17 creates a dark mood quite successfully and sometimes I think she is about to start singing a fado. :)

    • I agree that we are still waiting for masterpieces but if I consider personal taste only, 2017 shapes up to become one of my favourite post 2000 editions. So far, 2009 and 2012 top my list.

  15. Ohohoho it’s confirmed now! We will compete with Bulgaraian/Swedish team in Kyiv! Composers are Borislav Milanov, Bo Persson, Johan Alkenas and Lisa Ann-Mari Linder. Borislav Milanov is Bulgarian one of songwriters for Poli’s entry last year..singer is Tijana Bogicevic! This feels a bit awkward now to me! :/
