Slovenia: It’s Omar Naber to Kyiv!

omar-naber-smallSlovenia – Last night the final of EMA 2017 took place in Slovenia and Omar Naber won the contest, securing a place in Kyiv… the second time he has represented his country in that country! Omar last represented Slovenia in 2005 with ‘Stop‘ , also in Kyiv, where he failed to qualify for the final.

Since 2005 Omar has tried to go back to Eurovision four times in 2009 with ‘I still carry on’, in 2011 with ‘Bistvo skrito je očem’, in 2014 with ‘I won’t give up’ and in 2017 with ‘On my way’. In 2016, he entered the Swiss selection for the 2016 contest with the song, ‘Take me far’.

Last night he finally got his wish to return with this song:

Omar will perform on the 9th May in the first semi-final. What do you think of his chances?

  1. As someone said on Youtube: balladvision. I want variety and a good mix of stand out ballads and many upbeat songs in the arena and on my TV for 3 hours, not ballad after ballad. And certainly not ballads that sound like they’re 15 years old and nothing special like this one. This certainly wouldn’t have been my choice, but good luck Omar, well done at finally getting back to ESC. Not sure you’ll make it out of the semi-final though.

  2. So Slovenia produced this impressive show just to come up with someone who did not make it out of the semi-final 12 years ago? He has a strong voice but this is an attempt at an “anthemic” ballad out of a very dated musical. As for his scenic presence, he brings to mind a Playmobil figurine.

My top-14. Only four songs that I can really get behind so far:
    1) Italy
    2) France
    3) Finland
    4) Hungary

    5) Georgia
    6) Belarus
    7) Poland
    8) Switzerland
    9) UK
    10) Germany
    >>>11) Slovenia
    12) Spain
    13) Malta
    14) Albania

  3. On a more positive note, the Epic Sax Guy is back:

    • WOW … we are allowed to have some fun. Melikes. :)
Don’t they have a dated ballad they can send to Kiev?

      • Straight into my top-5 if they win. Come on Moldova you can do it :) And he is still as good a singer as ever.

On the other hand, they have this. A little embarassing perhaps and the audio is not in synch with the video (lol, way to go Moldova TV :) But it does have its charms:

        • I had heard this one before and still don’t know what to make of it. LOL
And then they have the tedious R. Siegel number that won the televote …
GOOOO Sun Stroke Projekt! I like their song this year much more than their 2010 effort which I never warmed up to. I’ll go for a walk now: almost 20 degrees and sunshine again. :)

        • Is it compulsory in Moldova to be fun and have violin on stage?
I actually like this. Strange how much all kinds of everything you can squeeze into three minutes. Never a dull moment!

    • Finally, people are waking up to one excellent live performance and it comes from Moldova. Guitar and me were the only ones around last evening who watched it live and we both agreed on it being very good. If it wins, I will be supporting it; it’s fun, unpretentious and well performed (and classy, which came as a a surprise).

    • while I dont like the Epic Sax Guy, I’ve always had a soft spot for Moldova in 2010, even then I was happy they qualified… on the other hand, even if I don’t like the whole “Epic Sax Guy” meme, it’s insane Sunstroke never capitalized more on it to go viral or at least come back to esc: the virality of it could qualify them as top 10 candidate!

also, the violin blonde is hot and now even hotter than the main singer (still fine looking though) lol

      • I also think they were great in 2010. You don’t find vocals that good in a dance song often. It was back at the time when Moldova was still sending ambitious stuff like Zdob şi Zdub, Natalia Barbu and Nelly Ciobanu of course. The singer has lost his louche slutboy looks along with some of his hair but that’s the passage time unfortunately :)

    • !!! Love it. What it lacks as a song it gains in stageing. I feel good! Moldova, bring it on 😃🎷🎻😃

  4. Ballad bin 2017: 12th SLO – 13th MLT – 14th GEO
    This needs to stop! LOL

  5. Slovenia had better choices that could give them their highest place ever but they missed the opportunity.
Omar is a great singer and the song is not bad but it will struggle for sure.

Problem is the contest still lacks a frontrunner to win at this point and unless the coming internal selections provide something great it may be a battle between Sweden and Greece at the end.

    Good luck Slovenia !

  6. Never been a fan of him. Neither, and in particular, of his 2005 entry.

  7. Dull, bland and lifeless melody and orchestration + very good vocals. Good luck, Slovenia.

P.S. – has Australia said anything about its entry?

  8. My new last, unlike Malta (Pocahontas!) and Georgia (Hair!) this one has nothing…

  9. ITA : Francesco Gabbani – Occidentali’s karma (9/10)
    FRA : Alma – Requiem (9/10)
    FIN : Norma John – Blackbird (8/10)
    ALB : Lindita Halimi – Botë (7/10)
BLR : NAVI – Historyja majho žyccia (7/10)
GEO : Tako Gachechiladze – Keep the faith (7/10)
    POL : Kasia Moś – Flashlight (7/10)
    HUN : Joci Pápai – Origo (7/10)
DEU : Levina Lueen – Perfect life (7/10)
    CHE : Timebelle – Apollo (6/10)
    MLT : Claudia Faniello – Breathlessly (6/10)
ESP : Manel Navarro – Do it for your lover (5/10)
GBR : Lucie Jones – Never give up on you (5/10)
SVN : Omar Naber – On my way (3/10)

    • I have the same top 5 but not in the same order.

    • I’ll give it a try too:

      ITA : Francesco Gabbani – Occidentali’s karma (10/12)
      HUN : Joci Pápai – Origo (9/12)
      FRA : Alma – Requiem (9/12)
      FIN : Norma John – Blackbird (8/12)
BLR : NAVI – Historyja majho žyccia (8/12)
      POL : Kasia Moś – Flashlight (7/12)
      ALB : Lindita Halimi – Botë (7/12)
GBR : Lucie Jones – Never give up on you (6/12)
SVN : Omar Naber – On my way (6/12)
DEU : Levina Lueen – Perfect life (6/12)
      CHE : Timebelle – Apollo (6/12)
ESP : Manel Navarro – Do it for your lover (5/12)
      MLT : Claudia Faniello – Breathlessly (5/12)
GEO : Tako Gachechiladze – Keep the faith (2/12)

  10. I’ve just listened to the Swedish snippets; Loreen seems to have gone for a song that does not have an obvious hook which is not very MF. My main problem with most of these songs is that they feature this obtrusive orchestration that invades everything and makes the singer sound like he or she is fighting to be heard. That said, Les Gordons have a pleasant song that really pleased me. Alice’s song dies during the chorus; Jon and Aninia’s lose themselves in an overpowering and pointless orchestration (the forest has eaten them); Loreen is far too busy trying to do too many things at the same time (serious, meaningful, cool and hip); Wiktoria is trying to win and sounds anonymous; Axel would be my second choice, followed by Sara and Juha. Good luck to all hopefuls.

  11. ITA – Francesco Gabbani – “Occidentali’s Karma”
HUN – Joci Pápai – “Origo”
    FRA – Alma – “Requiem”
FIN – Norma John – “Blackbird”
BLR – NAVI – “Historyja majho žyccia”
POL – Kasia Moś – “Flashlight”
    ALB – Lindita – “Botë”
    CHE – Timebelle – “Apollo”
GBR – Lucie Jones – “Never Give Up on You”
GEO – Tako Gachechiladze – “Keep the Faith”
MAL – Claudia Faniello – “Breathlessly”
DEU – Levina – “Perfect Life”
ESP – Manel Navarro – “Do It for Your Lover”
SVN – Omar Naber – “On My Way”

I don’t rate songs until they’re all released because I always rate them comparatively to the other songs, so there really isn’t a year where I won’t be giving out 10s or 1s, etc. The song’s I really love go from ITA to BLR, POL & ALB I “like”, CHE to MAL are okay, and the rest are unlistenable.

  12. Top 14 before tonight’s finals :

    Love :

    Really like :

    1. Switzerland – 8.3/10
    2. Poland 8.1/10
    3. France 8.0/10
    4. Germany – 8.0/10

    Like :

    5. Finland – 7.7/10
    6. Belarus – 7.5/10
    7. Slovenia – 7.5/10
    8. United Kingdom – 7.3/10
    9. Malta – 7.2/10
    10. Albania – 7.0/10

    I am ok with :

    11. Georgia – 6.3/10
    12. Hungary – 6.0/10
    13. Spain – 6.0/10

    I don’t like :

    Detest :

    14. Italy – 2.8/10

Tonight only Denmark may have a chance to choose something that will top Switzerland. Ukraine can provide an entry that will be in my top 5 with Illaria or Tayanna. And if SunStroke Project win in Moldova they can scrap a 10th-11th place.

  13. It’s admirable that Loreen made a comeback with a song that has little chance to win MF.Let’s see if she’ll go directly to the final or not.

  14. The 4th MF semi is by far the most competitive one and one of the best selections of songs this season.

  15. Robin or Nano will win MF. :(

  16. According to Ukrainian media O.Torvald and Tayanna are the 2 favorites to win tonight’s final.Melovin will be high with televote but he really needs to improve his jury score.

  17. They’ll be comparing Ukrainian finalists with the already chosen esc artists and songs.I suppose this will favore O.Torvald.

  18. I was never impressed by “Stop”, and this one is not for me either. It sounds very sentimental, pompous and musical-like, both the composition, the production and the vocals. Especially the strings are too much. It is supposed to express a lot of emotions, I imagine, but they don’t seem real to me. 5/12

  19. Notice that a lot of people here refer to him as a great singer. I really don’t think so. Technically is is good, but to be a great singer, you have to come up with a much more interesting vocal expression. Technique can’t do it alone, it is also about creativity.

  20. He is great singer and his song is quite nice. It will be interesting to see well this goes in eurovision. Well in anyway very best of luck to Omar and Slovenia! :) http://jake.suntuubi.com/
