ETSC 5: Get to know the songs!

ETSC July 2016ETSC – Every year, the summer is the calm after the storm so it’s the perfect time to resume the highly anticipated the Eurovision Times Song Contest! 45 of you entered for the July 2015 edition and a random draw was made yesterday! Discover the songs live tonight!

Each summer, a good number of regular readers stay around for different reasons (they don’t get breaks from work or don’t go on holidays…) but there aren’t much news to keep us going. So the last few years we introduced all sort of games. The Eurovision Times Awards (Fridas) and the Douze Points Trivia Quiz kept us going in 2013 and Fridas have made come-backs the past four years. Two years ago, a lot of you asked for a fake Eurovision where each one of us would send songs and get to vote. And that was it: the Eurovision Times Song Contest, from then on known as ETSC.

After a first round open for people to sign up with a country and send a song, we got 45 people in, with a few of our regulars missing (here’s a nod to you Stommie) and a few newbies! Hopefully, they all will make appearances in comments. But also some people who returned from last summer and from FDLC (Sedapsi, Tristian…). Songs will be revealed Saturday night. In the meantime, to keep us busy, I made a random draw with my computer. I also made personal postcards for each entry which will be revealed along with the songs. Everyone can still request to see their own postcards in full size.

00Here are a few facts about the 45 entries:

  • This is a rather well spread out contest: 25 female vocals / 20 male solo artists, even though a lot of entries have a DJ “featuring” a singer!
  • Well just like in the Eurovision Song Contest, English has won us over! 28 songs in English (including Ireland, United-Kingdom and Malta), but 1 of them is partially in French with 1 all in French, 3 Serbo-Croatian, 2 Arabic, 2 Russian, 1 Turkish, 1 Azerbaijani, 1 Bulgarian,1 Czech, 1 German, 1 Hungarian, 1 Italian, 1 Latin, 1 Spanish
  • Besides a lot of electro-pop, pop, folk, rock, mistic, shaky and ballads are all present!
  • On the other hand, only 2 artists did a NF! And one song for a small country was allowed from a neighbour one (inspired on what that small country used to send in esc).

Before the show starts, we get the live reprise of the winning song:

Can we beat last year’s editions in comments? ETSC 1 had 1,090 comments and ETSC 2 went all the way to 1,607 comments! We thought we reached our best when ETSC 3 ended at 1,686 comments but ETSC 4 went insane and we had 2,581 comments! We’ll see… Now to listen to the songs, you need to click on the song title. You can see the full postcard when it’s uploaded, stay tune:

Rules: the voting is now open! You can vote until Wednesday 20th at midnight CET! Results will probably be on the weekend after that, on a day that suits most people! In the meantime, you can do promo for your entry in the comment section here (or not at all). And as for me, I will be getting married tomorrow! So I will not necessarily reply back right away to your votes, so don’t worry too soon! Once you’ve voted, you can not change your votes, so wait until you’re sure. Also, you have to send me your 11th and 12th in case something goes wrong and we sadly have a DQ. So start voting now!

  1. #1-10 : Norway, Cyprus, Israel, Ukraine, Latvia, Tunisia, Greece, Sweden, FYROM and UK
#11-20 : Croatia, Belgium, Ireland, Belarus, Austria, France, Slovakia, Hungary, Netherlands, Azerbaijan
Some chances for lower top 20 : Armenia, Switzerland, Iceland, BiH and Germany

    • Norway,Cyprus,Israel and Greece keep on coming up all the time.Could they be the runaway top-4?
I believe you may reach top-10.And i agree on FYROM.It will do well, imo. On the other hand, you’re probably underestimating the Netherlands.

      • So it is among my lions and my boys? And Aurora who I bumped on her but left for the sake of Dobet and Kovacs? LOL

      • Yes I believe Netherlands can break into the lower top 10 (like “Set fire in the rain” in ETSC 1) but remains to be seen

  2. Here are my predictions:
Contenders: Netherlands, Israel, France, Ukraine, Norway, Iceland.
Rest of the top 10: Cyprus, Armenia, Belgium, Croatia.
Others with chances to end in lower top 10: Greece, Bosnia, Turkey, UK, Sweden.
Rest of the top 25: Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Slovakia, Finland, Hungary, Belarus, Azerbaijan.

  3. Also before the musical part we have to settle who wins the sexiest guy competition between Kristjan Kasearu :

    and Murat Ceylan :

    It is a serious issue

  4. One thing I know for sure – the Portuguese top 10 is cherished by me as yours are by you wherever you are. Good night!

  5. 12-“Baby”❤️
    10-Those yummy meatballs😋
8-My lovely friend Kat was born there
7-I have always wanted to learn that
6-That fest means “island” in Turkish
5-They got the best part of the country
4-I am obsessed with the theme
    3-White&blue look so pretty
2-Would have been my choice of an artist ,had he/she not been picked
    1-hot like hell

  6. Tunisian top 10:

    1 pt – 3 make a masterpiece
2 pts – I needed several years to figure that one out
3 pts – They are native only in the south
4 pts – There is one who does not belong to either
    5 pts – Headache
    6 pts – It’s out of town
7 pts – How in God’s name could they live there?
    8 pts – A serene hike
10 pts – There is a building that is a symbol of a better future
12 pts – Plan some extra time

  7. Hmm, I see no one is predicting my entry to do well. Nothing unusual here :P
As always, I won’t try to make a prediction because I’m really bat at making those. Of course, if anyone wants to try and guess my votes feel free to do so (I do predict that my votes will be harder to predict than usual :P )

  8. Here are the hints for my points:

1 pt – Their best place in ESC was in the 90’s
    2 pts – Non English
3 pts – Reminds me of a song I’ve sent in FdlC
4 pts – Not among my favourite ESC countries, not among my least favourite either
5 pts – Did it again!
6 pts – Won Eurovision more than once
    7 pts – Makes sense
8 pts – Much better than the first time
10 pts – Former contender – continues to deliver
12 pts – Caught me by surprise (but maybe it shouldn’t have), this is perfection!

  9. Btw I think my votes are kind of predictable this time around tbh based on my taste..probably my top 3 may be a surprise.

      • I am kind of impressed – that does not mean you found that many though :P

One of the songs you mentioned is in my bottom 5 though and I am kind of meh about another 2. That does not mean I voted for the rest :P

  10. Here are the Greek votes:

    12pts= Awarded then stripped
10pts= Defined a region in a key element
    8pts= Those six days
7pts= It shares smth with one country in south Europe
    6pts= The oldest
    5pts= Green roof
4pts= They serve it like espresso – the package
    3pts= Will it go underneath?
2pts= There are 2 in fact
1pt= 40kms (or so) of interruption

  11. I had three songs fighting for the 8, 10 and 12 points, and it was almost impossible to decide between them. Anyway, here are my hints.

1 point: One of only three
2 points: One more than the last time
3 points: The first since, well, very long
4 points: Sometimes it doesn’t have to be deeply intellectual
    5 points: Not in English
    6 points: Very rhythmic
    7 points: No instruments
8 points: There are instruments here
    10 points: Half steps
    12 points: “Boring” choice

  12. For annoucment day I already voted for Friday personally. Thursday is good too but I don’t think Morgan should be pressured. Anything from Sunday and beyond is a no go for me.

  13. And here are the Georgian hints!

    1- Not in English.
    2- Relaxing and laid back.
    3- Has classical inspirations.
    4- Unlike the rest.
5- Not the best of its kind that I have heard, but I normally adore this kind.
    6- Soothing, yet contemporary.
    7- Pretty standard fare.
    8- Minimal and atmospheric.
    10- “Popular” choice.
12- Unique in its sound comapred to the rest. Didn’t expect this one to win me over, but it really did.

  14. I will not post hints about my top 10 as I think im not that good at concealing them ehe. Damn its also scary that you become more and more predictable as you participate in more and more contests XD I hope my votes become a surprise nevertheless!

Thunder and lightning its getting exciting!
Good luck everyone and may the best ETSC song win! :D
