And the Frida goes to…

You can read more about Verka Serduchka on her Wikipedia page. Andriy Mykhailovych Danylko is a famous drag from Ukraine, known under her persona Verka Serduchka. The act came to internal fame in 2007 when it was picked to represent Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest. The song, “Dancing Lasha Tumbai” was performed in four languages but made big controversy as the invented words “lasha tumbai” was heard as “Russia goodbye”, only two years after the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. It was the runner-up behind Serbia that year, the second best result of the country at the time. Ukraine would get second the following year as well, and win the contest for the second time in 2016, as Verka took the role of spokesperson. The fame is real, as the song and act were featured in American satirical comedy Spy in a scene where Verka is performing outdoors in Paris. Nominated ten times overall ET Awards 2016, “Best Spokeperson” is its fourth so far! Congratulations!

  1. I believe the persona was stronger. Elodie was funnier but Lee stole the show again.

  2. I think that Verka’s mom should have her very own TV show.

  3. I voted for Ukraine but should have voted for France instead.
I can’t see the hype for Australia tbh

  4. Lee Lin Chin should have won, but Ukraine were entertaining as well – they HAVE to use Verka and her mother as the greenroom hosts next year.

  5. Moldova. Full stop. LOL

  6. Good!I voted for Ukraine too.

  7. I voted for France, but Verka was just amazing as well as was the proffesionalism from Australia!

  8. The Hungry Hearts want to walk the streets of Kyiv with their girlfriend so they’ll be submitting a song for MGP 2017!

  9. This is dedicated to the Brexiters. What has the European convention on human rights ever done for us.lol!

  10. Off topic: I dont normally write stuff like this, but got so frustrated and sad when I heard of the Orlando mass shooting, my heart goes out to all who are affected by the event in any way and the lives who were lost! <3

    • Indeed!Such a senseless act of violence against innocent people. It’s a sad day for the world today.

  11. Two shootings in Orlando within two days

    • Yet Mr. Trump claims that non-existant arms legislation makes the USA a much safer place than Europe …

      • Trump is an idiotic bigot. But unfortunately, a lot of American voters are too. It really makes me sad seeing people I used to go to school with and used to be friends with supporting him. I can’t drive around in my hometown without seeing Trump signs on people’s lawns.

  12. Off-topic: Congratulations to us. I missed the German match tonight because my plane was delayed due to thunderstorms in Croatia …

    • I saw bits of the match, but with Finnish commentary, so I didn’t understand anything of what was being said…

      • In the era of novelty act, I genuinely hated it in 2007 and seeing Marija’s “Moltiva” beating it was a true joy (plus right after Lordi, it meant two good winners in a row). Now I grew up to liking how hard working he is on his act, and how much of the persona he smoothed out to make something unique, true to the esc bubble and comfortable. It’s the only novelty act that became something else.

  13. I have spent years trying to decide what to think of the character Verka Serduchka and “Dancing Lasha Tombai”, and still haven’t come up with an answer.

I guess that is the whole point of it.

  14. I would pick Australian lady…she was so cute❤️
