ET Awards 2016: Best National Final!

fridas 2016Eurovision 2016 – This year we resume the “Eurovision Times Awards” to give prizes (the Fridas) for the best in every category! And you get to vote! Today, we resume the polls with the two categories focused on broadcasters’ choices!

2016 will be the fourth year for Eurovision Times to organize a new contest (you can check 2013’s results here, the 2014’s ones here, and the 2015’s ones here). As with the past few years, our blog hosts now two contests: TEKO which takes place before the contest and the “Eurovision Times Awards” after the contest. The principle of the ET Awards is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners. The winners recieve an imaginary trophee, entitled the Fridas in hommage to Frida Boccara, the French Eurovision winner in 1969 with “Un jour, un enfant“.

The thirteenth award is in the “Delegation” category and it’s “Best National Final”. Here are the results of the recommendations made by the regular users of Eurovision Times in this category:

  • 9 Ukraine
  • 9 Estonia
  • 3 Hungary
  • 3 Sweden
  • 2 Austria
  • 2 Iceland
  • 2 Norway
  • 1 Denmark
  • 1 Germany
  • 1 Latvia

However, it’s down to the staff of Eurovision Times to choose the official nominees. But it’s up to you to vote in our poll below which entry had the best national final this year! The nominees in alphabetical order are:

  • eesti laulEstonia‘s Eesti Laul

  • ADal 2016Hungary‘s A Dal

  • iceland logoIceland‘s Songvakeppnin

  • Norway‘s Melodi Grand Prix

  • ukraine logoUkraine‘s National Final

Rules: the polls will be open for a week. At the end of the week, an article will announce the winner of the category but not the detailed results. The full results will however be given to you once all polls are closed so that you don’t get influenced (we never know) in your following votes. Every IP gets only one vote, please do not cheat, do take in consideration if you really watched seriously national finals and do not vote necessarly for your favorite song but vote regarding to the category. Of course, it’s pointless to vote only for your own country unless you’re really certain it should win. May the best win!

  1. Melodifestivalen is always a difficult decision. To be fair, I enjoyed it a lot this year, but most of the times for the wrong reason (having a personal of mine win, seeing Molly lose…) It wasnt stellar by any ways, and we all noticed 3/4 artists were returnees without much original or interesting contents (except maybe Oscar). And SVT did everything better in ESC than in MF, including Mans’ reprise. So really, all other 5 up here were better productions, more interesting songs, etc.

    • If we are talking about production, Ukraine really shouldn’t be here. The final was a hot mess, interesting look at the post Soviet ways of budding nation. Horrible and embarrassing TV. The entries, of course are a totally different story.
      MF wasn’t much to shout about this year, but only when compared to MF’s. All the shots were in the ESC as they of course should. Still as TV entertainment it really is in the league of it’s own round here.

    • And my vote goes to Eesti Laul. Just lovely.

  2. This one is easy – Ukraine, followed by Estonia and Hungary.

  3. Ukraine no question. I liked almost every song in that final

  4. How I would have loved to see Ukraine winning with SunSay.

  5. Ukraine hands down!It was the rare case of a great national final that also provided the final eurovision winner.There were at least 3 more acts that would make great esc entries namely The Hardkiss,Svetlana Tarabarova and SunSay.

  6. I believed Ukrainian preselection had the highest average of songs on my list but I checked it out again and it only came second to Eesti Laul (6.28 VS 6.60).
    Plus I always enjoy Eesti Laul for the exciting jury voting combined with televoting points resulting to a thrilling Super Final (thankfully of 3 superfinalists which makes it fairer to when it was 2 superfinalists allowing negative vote).
    So my vote will go once again to Eesti Laul!
    Ukraine and Iceland follow in that order.

    • Here’s my full ranking and averages of 2016 preselections :
      Eesti Laul = 6.60
      Ukraine = 6.28
      Söngvakeppnin = 6.25
      Georgian NF = 6.20
      Dansk MGP = 6.10
      Belgian NF = 6.00
      A Dal = 5.87
      Unser Lied für Stockholm = 5.60
      Eurovision You Decide (UK) = 5.50
      FiK = 5.47
      San Remo = 5.46
      Melodifestivalen = 5.41
      Wer singt für Österreich? = 5.40
      Norsk MGP = 5.30
      EMA = 5.10
      Krajowe Eliminacje = 5.00
      Belarusian NF = 4.90
      Malta – Eurosong = 4.85
      UMK = 4.72
      Selecția Națională = 4.58
      Eurovizija (Lithuania) = 4.50
      Supernova = 4.35
      Objetivo Eurovisión = 4.33
      Die Grosse Entscheidungs Show = 4.33
      O Melodie Pentru Europa = 3.75

  7. Ukraine without a second thought.

  8. Yep, it’s Ukraine, even if Hungary managed to show a handful of songs I loved too. What made the Ukrainian NF extra entertaining was of course, as always, Ruslana, and the English commentator translating the whole show for us fans. “The jury is trying to be funny” :D

  9. Ukraine for me. It featured my favourite entry of the NF season (“We Do Change”) and at least 3-4 other great songs, including the eventual ESC winner. It was also the NF with the best production imo (I in terms of show and staging) beating even MF.

  10. MF should be nominated here and DMGP for that matter but anyway…Ukraine held a pretty good nf but the song quality combined with the overall production of the final in Eesti Laul will get my vote.

  11. I didn’t follow the NF season this year, so I can’t vote here.

  12. It looks like The Hardkiss will try to represent Ukraine again in 2017.They’re already writing the song: http://wiwibloggs.com/2016/06/06/ukraine-the-hardkiss-julia-sanina-eurovision-2017/143516/
