ET Awards 2016: Best Backdrop!

fridas 2016Eurovision 2016 – This year we resume the “Eurovision Times Awards” to give prizes (the Fridas) for the best in every category! And you get to vote! Today, we resume the polls with the two categories focused on backings and backdrop!

2016 will be the fourth year for Eurovision Times to organize a new contest (you can check 2013’s results here, the 2014’s ones here, and the 2015’s ones here). As with the past few years, our blog hosts now two contests: TEKO which takes place before the contest and the “Eurovision Times Awards” after the contest. The principle of the ET Awards is simple, in each categories, the staff of this website will nominate a few entries per categories and open polls for the public to vote in them so we can reveal afterwards all the winners. The winners recieve an imaginary trophee, entitled the Fridas in hommage to Frida Boccara, the French Eurovision winner in 1969 with “Un jour, un enfant“.

The tenth award is in the “Delegation” category and it’s “Best Backdrop”. Here are the results of the recommendations made by the regular users of Eurovision Times in this category:

  • 11 Ukraine
  • 3 Austria
  • 3 Czech Republic
  • 3 Italy
  • 3 Latvia
  • 3 Norway
  • 2 Australia
  • 2 Bulgaria
  • 2 Georgia
  • 2 Iceland
  • 2 Netherlands
  • 1 Armenia
  • 1 Belarus
  • 1 Belgium
  • 1 Croatia
  • 1 France
  • 1 Germany
  • 1 Israel
  • 1 Sweden

However, it’s down to the staff of Eurovision Times to choose the official nominees. But it’s up to you to vote in our poll below which entry had the best backdrop this year! That includes the images on the led screens and the light show. You need to click on the country’s name to be redirected to the video of the song. The nominees in alphabetical order are:

  • Latvia‘s dark architecture

Rules: the polls will be open for a week. At the end of the week, an article will announce the winner of the category but not the detailed results. The full results will however be given to you once all polls are closed so that you don’t get influenced (we never know) in your following votes. Every IP gets only one vote, please do not cheat, do take in consideration to watch very careful to the backdrop before voting and do not vote necessarly for your favorite song but vote regarding to the category. Of course, it’s pointless to vote only for your own country unless you’re really certain it should win. May the best win!

  1. Again a tough category, and a lot of other backdrops got my interest: Netherlands’ clock, but then it was only a clock, or Bulgaria’s cool modern approach, only I find out that it wasnt their choice but Bjorkman’s… so… Armenia and Germany had cool backdrops, but they felt like they OVERTOOK their entries, instead of enhancing them…

  2. Latvia. Especially when the whole thing collapsed beneath him.

  3. Ukraine! No competition here. That was super-effective and one of those images that will stay in the eurovision memory for the years to come.

  4. Easy one. Ukraine once again.

  5. No competition here! Easily Ukraine, who worked the backdrop perfectly with the essance of Jamalas performance and the song itself! Latvia again? tbh their backdrop was good, but havn’t they been nominated in every single award they could have been in now? :P There is a reason why it didn’t get in the top 10 and also why it reached the final. It got imo a reasonable placing for how it played out on stage.

I kinda think Armenia still deserves a place here. Those cool effects really enhanced that song who before I thaught was kinda meh, but on stage damn..! It was literally an eyegasm <3

    • well, obviously Ukraine is by far the most nominated entry by now. Latvia is second most nominated, but to be fair, in all of Latvia’s nominations Latvia WAS in the top 5 of the recommendations (plus it won two rounds, male style and male vocals, and was second in two others, in performance and composition)…

      • Im talking in general doh, not because you nominated it :P
I get that people nominated it a lot, but in some categories just no..
In the end, we will see what the silent majority thinks ;)

  6. I agree with the majority for once and go with Ukraine.

Because it suited both the mood in the music and the blue dress worn by Jamala. The entry as a whole worked as a homogeneous artistic entity.

  7. I liked a lot Ukraine’s tree, but I really loved Latvia’s architecture, it was the most modern and professional backdrop imo, it fitted so well with the song. And now looking back at all these categories it’s really impressive how Latvia pulled it off at most of them and it’s upseting to think that juries ranked it only 15th, seriously what were they thinking ?

Belgium’s backdrop was great too. I also liked Netherlands’ clock and Czech Republic’s backdrop.

    • What is really impressive is that so many of you liked the song so much before the contest that you applaud all of the individual elements that made it such an obvious failure on stage. His performance and singing was total overkill, his style completely unflattering to his body type and instead of using the backdrop to compensate for the industrial coldness of the sound, they managed to underline it even more.

For what he presented, Justs should be very satisfied with 15th place.

      • I disagree, the whole show and his performance made the song better for me. I actually didn’t like it from the start, it took a few listenings and it went up in my ranking after each listening and before the show it was my 9th (so not really among my big favourites).

  8. I actually ended up voting for Sweden, because I think it was the backdrop that most enhanced the entry. Jamala’s tree was amazing and perfectly suited the song, and it will be the deserved winner when it wins, but I wanted to give this vote to Sweden.

  9. Ukraine! Austria is overrated this year in ET AWARDS !

  10. I voted for Ukraine.

  11. Latvia ! Simply stunning!

  12. I voted for Austria. The Ukrainian backdrop was a bit messy for my liking – I had hoped for something a little more modern and restrained.

  13. Tough choice tbh..All of those were good with Ukraine, Latvia and Sweden having an edge. I think I will vote for Sweden here – everything was done in the most tasteful and simple yet effective way.
