Iceland: Regína Ósk Enters Söngvakeppni

  Iceland – As the Icelandic newspaper Visir reports, Regína Ósk will compete in Söngvakeppni Sónvarpsins once again. She has already represented Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contst in 2008 as part of the duo Euroband. She was also a backing vocalist for Iceland in 2001,2003 and 2005.  She will sing the song Hjartað brennur (My heart burns) which is described as an uptempo song, which was written by composers Maria Björk, Fredrik Randquist Maria and Marcus Frenell (more…)

Iceland: Yohanna To Compete?

  Iceland -  The young singer Yohanna represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the ballad “Is It True” and brought the island its best placing ever as she came second after power house Alexander Rybak. This year Yohanna tried to return to the Eurovision stage with her song “Nótt” but was beaten by Sonni’s Friends in the Icelandic national final who sang a tribute to their friend and composer of the song, Sonni Brink, who had died before the national final. Iceland: Changes to the National Final

IcelandESCNorge.com reports that the Icelandic broadcaster RUV has decided to change the selection method used for searching the representative for the island at the 57th Eurovision Song Contest. Previous news stated that only one final was going to be held, now RUV has added three semi-finals.

Iceland: Video of “Coming Home” Premiers

Iceland – The official preview video of the Icelandic entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 was premiered today. The new English version of the song is called “Coming Home” which is a direct translation of “Aftur heim”. The video shows Sigúrjon’s friends and family members of the late singer and songwriter dancing at a barn. The song’s lyrics were written by igurjón Brink’s widow, Thorunn Clausen. (more…)

Sigurjón’s Friends Will Sing In English

Iceland – Þórunn Erna Klausen the widow of Sigurjón Brink and co-writer of Aftur Heim, Pálmi Sigurhjartarson has talked about her husband’s sudden death, the plans for Eurovision and the genesis of the Icelandic entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 on television yesterday.  As Flosi Jon Ofeigsson reports on his blog, Klausen explained, that the song was written and composed in a single evening and that they submitted the song just 2 minutes before the deadline. Yohanna Releases “Nótt” in English

Iceland – She was the big favourite to win the Icelandic national final and represent her country once again at the Eurovision Song Contest. To the consternation of many Eurovision fans she did not even come into the Top 2 and Sigurjón’s Friends will represent Iceland in Eurovision. Now Yohanna has released a snippet of the English version of her entry “Nótt” on her website. Iceland: “Sigurjóns Friends – Aftur heim” to Eurovision

Iceland - The Icelandic national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 ended in a slight surprise. The big favourite Yohanna, who had already achieved a second place for her country in 2009, did not even make the Top 2. Magni Ásgeirsson and Sigurjóns Friends with their song Aftur heim did instead. The song “Aftur heim” was written by  Sigurjón Brink, who passed away shortly before the competition started. At the request of his family, the song remained in the competition and was be performed by some of Sigurjón’s  friends. The tribute band consists of Hreimur Örn Heimisson, Gunnar Ólason, Benedikt Brynleifsson, Vignir Snær Vigfússon, Matthías (more…)

Iceland - Tonight the most Nordic participant in the Eurovision Song Contest will choose their entry for Düsseldorf. It seems like “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2011” has become a two-horse race. Yohanna, who represented her country in Moscow in 2009 and came second, was the big favourite all along. But now “Aftur heim” a song performed as a tribute to its composer Sigurjón Brink by his friends might score some sympathy points. Iceland – Right after Norway’s third semi-final, Iceland continue its selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. 5 acts competed in the last heat of “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins”  and three qualified for the final. The song “Aftur heim” by Sigurjón Brink, who passed away last week, was performed by some of Sigurjón’s  friends. Apparently the rules were changed as from previous semi-finals only 2 songs qualified. These are the qualifying entries: (more…)

Iceland: Third semi-final songs with a tribute

Iceland – RUV, the Icelandic national broadcaster has just published the songs which will be competing in the third semi-final of “Sjónvarpsins 2011″. The song “Aftur heim” by Sigurjón Brink, who passed away last week will, at the request of his family, remain in the competition and will be performed by some of Sigurjón’s  friends. Brink died aged 36, from a heartattack last Tuesday. He leaves behind a wife (more…)

Iceland – Right after Norway’s second semi-final, Iceland held its own second semi-final for the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. 5 acts  competed in this heat of “Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins” but only two qualified for the national final: 2009 runner-up of the Eurovision Song Contest Yohanna and Matthías Matthíasson & Erla Björg Káradóttir. Iceland – Week 2 for the early Scandinavian NF brings us more songs in Iceland. They have released the 5 songs to participate in the second semi-final, to be held on January 22.  Only three of them will qualify to a final. All songs had to be in Icelandic. This week sees the return of 2009 winner Yohanna which scored Iceland’s best esc result ever coming second to… Norway ! (more…)

Iceland: First semi-final songs out !

Iceland – After Norway, it’s another Scandinavian country that releases songs to relief our eager to discover the 2011 entrants. Iceland has released only the 5 songs to participate in the first semi-finale, to be hold on January the 15th. Three of them only will qualify to a finale. All songs had to be in Icelandic, giving an overall nice tone to a rather low-leveled semi where no songs show much originality or creativity. (more…)

Iceland: Yohanna and Magni return

Iceland - The line-up for the Icelandic national final is slowly being revealed and apparently two former participants will return. Yohanna enchanted Iceland with her ballad “Is it true” and her flawless voice in 2009. She won the Icelandic national final that year and brought the Nordic island its best result ever when she came second in the Eurovision final. This time with news from FYR Macedonia, Estonia and Albania

Malta – PBS, the Maltese national broadcaster has announced the date of next year’s national final for the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. The Mediterranean island will select their entry on February 12. PBS received 141 songs from which 24 semi-finalists were chosen. The semi-final will take place one day before the final and 16 songs will qualify.

Estonia – ERR announced that Janne Saar has been disqualified from the Estonian national final for Eurovision 2011. The song “Meeting The Wolf” breached the rules as it was released before September 1. The singer is replaced by Tiiu Kiik and the song with a quite suiting title (more…)

Iceland: Composers revealed

Iceland – Icelandic television RÚV has announced the sixteen songwriters, that have made it to the second round of the Icelandic preselection. A total of 174 composers had submitted entries. The composers can now chose wether to keep the artist they used for the demo or to choose a completely new singer. The names of the artists will be made public in early January, while the national final is set to take place on February 12. Iceland will sing in Icelandic in 2011

Páll Magnússon, director of the Icelandic television RÚV, has announced that only songs performed in Icelandic may participate in the Icelandic National Final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. Since 1999 (the year the language rule fell) Iceland has always performed in English, resulting in 2 second places in 1999 with Selma (All out of luck) and 2009 with Yohanna (Is it true?). (more…)
