BLP #3: Tooji – Stay

Posted: September 6, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in Ranking

Best Last Place – 90 songs have come last or shared last at the Eurovision Song Contest. Over the last weeks hundreds of our readers have voted for their favorites. Each voter submitted his personal Top 5. In the next days we will reveal your Top 15. Today, we continue with this year’s last place from Norway!

Norway sent young singer, actor and model Tooji to Baku in 2012. It was Toojis birthday. His mother had fled with him from Iran. Probably due to this experience, he also worked as a social worker helping asylum seekers and children in need. Due to his origins and his dynamite looks, he was dubbed “Persian Prince” in Norway. His song “Stay” is a typical dance song with Middle Eastern elements. Tooji performed in a leather jacket and brown leggings. His slick dance routine could not cover the fact that Tooji was far from a great live singer. In the end he did not get the birthday present he may have hoped for. With only 7 points, Norway got its 11th last place finish in a Eurovision final. The co-writer of the song Peter Boström, also co-wrote the eventual winner from Sweden and thus came first and last in the same year. Incidentally, Norway almost pulled out of the final as some of the national broadcaster’s journalists had been assaulted by Azeri security at the Baku airport.

LOL, this must be a joke :) ))))))

Excpected it to be high on here. I actually like the song very much but the performance was incredibly half-assed. However this got 2 points from me here. Now 3 songs that I voted for is on the list (the others being Poland 2011 and San Marino 2008). Next I wanna see Switzerland 2011 and Finland 2009 as the winner :D PS: Listen to that last ”stay” and you will be laughing for months. It’s just hilarious XD

  3. Oscar says:

Well… here we have Eric Saade 2.0 … no coments

  4. Butterblume says:

Well at least it’s not that high… i feared it would be on #1

Songwise i liked this one but the performance was second-worst in 12 (with only Russia being worse). I was totally ok with it on the last place and i would have preferred seing Bulgaria (having the same amount of points in the semi) in this final.

I can’t believe that everyone is talking about Finland 09. Even as a winner? Why? I haven’t even considered to put it on my list. Finland 09 was one of the worst songs in that final so it came last…

Hoping for Switzerland to be first and maybe a suprise on #2…

  5. skgambassadortoesc says:

I don’t like it but, imho, Russia, Ukraine, Ireland and Greece were worse than this, so, in a way, it didn’t deserve to be last on the scoreboard. But #4 on this list?! No way.

Btw, any news from Sara anyone? I really miss her. Hello Sara, if you read this! :)

  6. stommie says:

These rankings begin to annoy me as much as the predictable 12 points all countries give.

  7. ALEX_AZERBAIJAN says:

This year Norway deserved to be in Top 10! :(

I hope that the winner will be Finland ’09!

  8. milim says:

It wasn’t so bad, the song is catchy, I was surprised when he finished last.
But what would’ve been worse? Tooji or SOFI MARINOVA?

  9. I really hate it and it should probably have stayed in the semi, considering its final result last is a bit too harsh considering Russia, Greece or Ukraine. Anyway, I expected this to win, so I guess it leaves room for Anna Rossinelli?

    • Gio says:

Russia, Greece and Ukraine did not deserve to b in last place! Russia had a catchy song, Greece’s song has a fab chorus and Gaitana had a fantastic voice! More than i can say for Tooji that’s for sure…he simply could not perform. Although i have to admit there were some other songs in the final that deserved to come last other than him.

  10. togravus says:

Sorry but seeing this piece of … well, I will keep it decent … in 3rd place, I have to become nasty. The song is incredibly lame and Tooji may have many talents …. but live singing most certainly isn’t among them. I guess that he got a lot of votes because people think that he is hot … *yawn*

  11. Eulenspiegel says:

A very lame and flat song and Tooji certainly doesn’t lift it up. Lame performance, stupid lyrics, a weak voice et cetera. And call me a dinosaur if you want, but is that sound we here between 0:13-0:19 supposed to be music?

  12. CC says:

If you discount the unfairly bought places from France and Malta it came indeed last. Well, je do not like it and I guess it does not deserve to be that high on this chart BUT Norway did not have the worst song in the final (the abysmal craps from Spain, Ireland or Holland deserved this ‘honour’ much, much more imho).

  13. Patrick P. says:

It’s absolutely a terrible song, make no mistake about that, and as I said multiple times on here, I saw the last place for Norway coming from a mile away (in truth, I expected him to be left behind the semis, which was one point away from being what happened). It’s slander and a shame that this song is on this list at all, and it’s depressing that this song is in the top 3 best last place entries.

Sofi Marinova would have been far more interesting and fun (and I think somewhat more successful) in the finals.

  14. Phyll says:

Pretty boy should have stayed in semis and celebrated his bday somewhere else.

  15. Now that I’ve watched the performance again , it’s even worse than I remembered.Terrible vocals and messy stage presentation. It’s in my bottom 4 for the 2012 Final and did not deserve #3 on this list whatsoever…
My ranking for the 2012 Final :

    1)Sweden , 2)Albania , 3)Estonia , 4)BiH , 5)Iceland
    6)Moldova , 7)Lithuania , 8)FYROM , 9)Serbia , 10)Germany ,
    11)Denmark , 12 )Italy , 13)Azerbaijan , 14)Hungary , 15)Cyprus ,
    16)Romania , 17)Spain , 18)Ukraine , 19)Turkey , 20)Greece
    21)Malta , 22)Ireland , 23)Norway , 24)UK , 25)Russia , 26)France !

Israel and Finland should have been in the Final over Russia and Ireland from semi 1.

The Netherlands , Slovenia , Portugal and Croatia over Ukraine , Turkey , Malta and Norway from semi 2.

    2012 most overrated stuff :
    1)Russia
    2)Turkey
    3)Azerbaijan
    4)Spain

    2012 most underrated stuff :
    1)Slovenia
    2)Netherlands
    3)Iceland
    4)Israel
    5)BiH
    6)Denmark
    7)Finland
    8)Hungary

  16. Goat Market says:

Speaking of musical craftsmanship the song is not that bad. I think some elements are actually quite catchy, including the bridge (“What’s it doing to me…”) and the “na na na na na na stay”-part. But overall the song is not very interesting. Moreover I’m getting a bid tired of that synth-sound. It has been far too dominating in the pop music of the most recent years.

I don’t think it deserved to come last, but it’s certainly not one of my favourites, even when it comes to last places. I have a nasty feeling I’m not going to see “Brandenburger Tor” (Norway 1990) on the list, but democracy is democracy…

  17. tehoe says:

I don’t like the song. It didn’t deserve to come last in 2012, but it didn’t deserve to be on this list either.

  18. Anon says:

He technically isn’t last at all, 50/50 is a system that defies mathematics and logical laws (and jury bribing and jury love for kitchy and commercial songs)

  19. Sam Smales says:

I liked it at MGP, but he was weak at Eurovision, I still gave it 5 points, because of the NF performance.

  20. Anonymous says:

    He can’t dance.

  21. cala12 says:

Hello everyone :) I’ve been away for a while. I used to be on esctoday a lot but I hate their new site…anyway it’s good to see a lot of familiar faces still around. Hope everyone have had a great summer :) . For those of you who says Tooji doesnt cant sing live, I can prove you wrong :p

“Stay” acoustic and his new song “If it was’nt for you”

    From a tv-show a week ago:

    • togravus says:

      Hello dear Sara. :)
I hope that you enjoyed summer. I have been very busy and haven’t found the time to go anywhere this year … except Berlin, where I have been on a business assignement since July. :(

Well, perhaps Tooji can sing live but if he can sing live, it unfortunately did not show in Baku …

  22. dimitrisesc says:

I think that Norway should go back to good Nordic music or send a pop song next year.No more shake it,latin and haba-haba tunes.
PS: This site has become a dead zone as well?

    • Eulenspiegel says:

Not dead, but it has turned into hibernation. It’s officially “ESC winter”. But when “spring” arrives, we will be hungry. :)

If there’s someone out there who is interested, I can tell some minor news from Sweden. The mailbox for MF 2013 entries is closed and there was 2 549 songs submitted this time. It’s the lowest number since 2002. Christer Björkman chooses to look on the bright of life though, and thinks that the songwriters have decided to go for quality instead of quantity.

      • dimitrisesc says:

I read that stuff about Sweden too, visiting other sites. Please write any news you may come across and we may keep the place alive. :) There was also a rumor in the Greek media that Helena Paparizou may have been asked to be one of the esc hosts.

        • Eulenspiegel says:

Yes, I have heard the same rumours here. Though I don’t really understand why. She has never hosted a program before (at least not in Sweden) and her connection with ESC is almost completely with Greece. But we’ll wait and see.

To continue my information, there was a list published in tabloid paper Expressen on artists that have submitted entries in ESC. There are artists from the latest editions like Sean Banan, Ulrik Munther, Top Cats and Mattias Andreasson. There are artists from Pop Idol Sweden wanting to become the new Loreen. And there are veterans like Jessica Andersson (2003), Arvingarna (1993) and Tommy Körberg (1969, 1988).

  23. dimitrisesc says:

The Swiss songs are online by the way.
