Israel: New National Final Concept Announced

Posted: August 14, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in Israel

Israel – “Israel goes Melodifestivalen” would probably the best summary of the new national final concept that the Israeli national broadcaster IBA has announced for the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö. Instead of the traditional KDAM, a 4-show selection marathon will be organized. A total of 30 artists will compete in three preliminary rounds. Three songs from each show will qualify for the final (two by televoting, one by jury decision).

According to media reports the show will cost around 2 million dollars.  Threats of the Israeli embassy in Sweden to withdraw from the contest due to cases of antisemitism in Malmö thus seem to have been fruitless. It is the national broadcaster that has to take the ultimate decision about participation.

    “Israel goes Melodifestivalen”.
Well, I hope that, if they opt for sth like this, they’ll, at least, leave the glitter and gloss aside.

    “Time” was so criminally underrated.
    Best of luck.

  4. They have been once again robbed ! “Time” is my #8 this year with 9/12 and deserved Final of course ! The new NF format sounds promising.
PS : I don’t understand the urge to trash Swedish MF down on a constant basis, the moment they proved that they could provide a winning entry this year without being even close to glossy , glittery or shallow imo !
    Hi Oxi :P

      Hi Donnie :)

“the moment they proved that they could provide a winning entry this year without being even close to glossy , glittery or shallow imo”

Actually I don’t think that what you write is very far from my point. If Israel want to go for sth MF-style, let them do it.
And imho, “Euphoria” is sort of an exception to the MF “rule”. Given the majority of the MF stuff we had to endure all these, last in particular, years, I think I’m allowed to be sceptic with Israel’s decision ;) :)

That sounds like a very ambitious project!I hope they will just keep the M.F concept and provide us with some very good Israeli music!

  6. So Loreen victory will launch many copy/cat of MF… as said earlier by others, Israeli NF and internally selected are usually of great quality, so I hope an Israeli version of MF would mean 30 good songs, and not 30 songs of shallow and mainstreamly average qualities (and I’d like to go on record saying don’t insult anyone saying that nor any genre, there could be good schlager and good rock as there can be bad songs of both…) But we don’t know yet how the final decision will be made. 2 by televote, 1 by jury seems to indicate a preference for televote, whereas before the juries had an equal if not more say in Israeli esc entry! That’s something I fear!

Excellent news. I have really liked all Israeli entries since 2007 with one (obvious) exception … fabulous Dana Int., who should never have come back. Israel’s 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 entries are all in my top 10 of their respective years. I love 2007 too (in particular the video clip) but I admit that Teapacks were a bit messy and lukewarm live.

A single NF with 10 songs will be enough.. or I can just watch the final one.. the first and last one I watched an Israili NF was in 2011 and the outcome was terrible..

  9. Only with good foreign composers they can make it nice, otherwise I feel it will suck! :(
