Best Semi-Final Non Qualifiers– Over the last two weeks, hundreds of our readers have voted for their Top 5 Best Eurovision entries that did not make it to the final. Each voter had ten points to distribute: 5 to his favorite, 4 to the second place etc. Out of these points we calculated the ultimate Top 15 of your favorite Semi-Final non qualifiers! You can see the other places and our other rankings here! Your place 5 goes to Estonia.

The winners of Eesti Laul 2010, the band Malcolm Lincoln represented Estonia in Oslo. The band’s name originates from the quiz show “Who wants to be a millionaire”, in which a woman incorrectly answered Malcolm Lincoln (the right answer being Abraham Lincoln). The band characterizes their style as “electronic pop with a slightly quirky undertone”. Their song “Siren” was in that category. In the lyrics, the singers describes his life as lame: “Has been oh lame so far I wasted years, I wasted time” and asks for a second chance: “Give me time and give me strength Give me strenght to carry on Give me bit of hope now, help me through the night”. During the performance the camera spun around the lead singer several times. Estonia came 14th and thus failed to qualify for the final.

Funny thing this song is featured that high on the list..The presence of many wanna be alternative fans on the forum must have resulted to that. Well it’s a credible and interesting musical effort definately that experiments with some electronic sounds I really like but as a whole and after seeing the live performance it’s somewhat underwhelming and plain. It tries to make a statement but ends up being kind of repetitive and not really proceeding with what I would expect, there is no twist. In it’s field though it’s a decent effort and a representative of the alternative character of Eesti Laul and the Estonian music scene in general. No I would not consider it a finalist after I have seen the live performance thus I do not agree with its presence on the list (and as I have said Estonia is my favourite esc country thus I might be a little bit more harsh). Quite typical that average wanna be alternative tastes supper it though.

      *supports it though

    • Adorable to be called “wanna be alternative fans”… we’re not wanna be anything, we consider ourselves esc fans, PERIOD! The fact some of us got banned from Esctoday and other sites MADE us “alternative” fans but that has nothing to do with our taste which is all different from one another and we all care and love esc!

      • guitaristbl says:

Hmmm..so when people’s tastes are called “average esc fan tastes” for liking europop or schlager this is acceptable but when it comes to other tastes this is not an acceptable adjective ? Thank once again for proving me the undemonstrative nature of you and your friends.

        • guitaristbl says:

          * undemocratic

        • I take for average esc fan tastes the OGAE results, where Sweden almost always wins and when a few songs like Slovakia 2010 did very well. Then I take them as the “average esc fans taste” because that’s what OGAE votes are. I do not reduce an individual’s taste to that. For instance, I have Sweden as my #1 in 99 and that’s an average esc fans taste, but when I love Estonia 2010 I know I’m more outside that route. That’s all there is to it from my side.

From yours, it’s saying that US we only like songs because they’re outside the typical and that we averagely just like those songs. Which is an insult to our individuality and our intelligence and consciousful taste. I hope you see the difference, if not, then you’re just an insulting moron (do notice there’s a “if” in that sentence)

          • guitaristbl says:

The same way it’s an insult to MY individuality and MY intelligence to have tastes that like Pop or schlager or whatever to be called “average” and we very well know that it does not have to do with the fact they are the norm with the esc fans to appreciate a good schlager piece, it s a clear statement of elitism that wants to degrade them and me included as individuals. According to your interpretation of average you could have evaluated my remark the same way : that I was reffering to what is the norm to like for some people around here according to their taste, same as with the OGAE vote. But no you interpreted the very same way you mean it when you say it. As an individual I am offended by such remarks same as you and it’s about time that is realized ! I think I made my point.

    • However, being insulted is a line crossed that I do not appreciate. See that it does not happen again.

      • togravus says:

Don’t worry, guitar is simply unable to post a single comment without insulting others. It has been like that for years and it is nothing to worry about or to take personally.
He simply is suprerior and all of us would be wise accept that fact … ;)

        • If true, then he should be banned forever. I refuse someone who is unable to insult someone else. I’ve had fights with people in the past, but it’s never been generalized and constant.

          • guitaristbl says:

Oh believe me if I asked for bans everytime I felt insulted and harrased by the “unholy group of 4″ around here your friend above should have been banned a 3 digit number of times..

            • But maybe your claims were wrongfuly justified. I’ve just asked for yours, we’ll see where it’ll get us ;)

              • guitaristbl says:

Hmmm…Maybe I should ask for certain bans now, never too late I guess…I be been the good and polite guy for quite some time now..So yes after continuous harrassment, disrespect of my opinion and constant mockery I believe the “togravus” user primarily should be banned.

                • togravus says:

I agree. I should be banned for not putting up with your constant insults, an inacceptable behaviour which spoils all the fun. Then guitar could have it all his way. Wouldn’t that be nice, not having to cope with diversity?

                  • guitaristbl says:

Yes it would be nice not to have to cope with comments like “what a bunch of nonsense” on a personal opinion on a music festival I provided or other forms of insults and mockery, constant elitism, constant need to degrade different tastes and be ironic towards them and of course all that covered under a ludicrous “celebrate diversity” remark that always remained only in words..Stop bothering with my comments as I have done for quite some time with all yours, even the ones that were terribly offending. And keep repeating what you wrote a couple of times a day. You may actually believe it. Fortunately I do not let you or your friends to spoil my fan with your constant degrading remarks. I will always voice my opinion. Never was and never will I be afraid to do so despite your harrassment !

                • togravus says:

And finally on a more serious note. You snubbed this blog for a very long time calling it elitist and other things on that other site that has gone to sleep. When you came here as a refugee some time ago, I welcomed you despite all the quarrels we had had before and told you that we did not expect an oath of loyalty. We expect polite language and respectful behaviour towards all ET members though. I do not think that this is too much to ask for.
                  Case closed!

P.S. And I do not understand in which way a comment like mine (“pink schlager and europop bubble”) could be considered as an insult. A brief look at OGAE votings makes it perfectly clear that songs that are outside the ESC box (schlager, europop, big ballads) are very rarely appreciated by the inner circle of ESC fans. That is a plain fact and certainly not an elitist evaluation of taste. I simply tend to disagree with the taste of most ESC fans but that does not make my taste superior, just different.

“I simply tend to disagree with the taste of most ESC fans but that does not make my taste superior, just different.”

Words, words and more words – and then come the actions (or other words should I say) that constantly contradict all that..Typical behaviour by now.
Since I started commented on the blog I just had to tolerate pretty much the same thing I endured at esctoday : Mockery, harrassment and disrespect of my opinion. Although more intensfied since the old esctoday was a place with many diverse tastes while here anybody with a different taste stands out and is treated in a more bold degrading way.

I was polite with everyone who was polite with me. That’s the fair thing to do. I provided my honest opinion on the articles and nothing more. And I will continue doing so. I ignored pretty much every remark I considered offending after the contest as a part of my new policy not to waste precious time on such attitudes and again one the few times I came to comment I was once again harrrased. That says pretty much about whose attitude was not respectful around here. I did expect too much from people who have showed their true colors a long time ago though…And now it’s a closed case and I am glad we settled it.

All I can do is feel sorry for your constant need to project your issues on me. Once you aggreviated me I have to admit. Now I just feel sorry for you :(

I’ve been gone for a day and now when I return I find this huge discussion. ESC can truly spark some debate. I’ve already said enough about Andorra 2007, so I’ll just make a short comment on Mr. Lincoln: A very daring and cool song, which of course was way too non-conventional for European TV-viewers to grab. It is one of my top 10 songs from 2010 and I think it deserves a place on this list, although not so high imo. I think the spooky music video would deserve a mentioning too.

  3. Hahahhah schlagers and europop are not successful at ESC and Malcolm Lincolm or whatever is his/its name is! LOOL I saw he almost won this “EXTRAORDINARY ” festival :D , he can’t qualify for ESC final, not to mention smth more than ESC, lool

  4. dimitrisesc says:

I like the song but i like watching the video even more. And it’s a winter song for me.However,i didn’t like the live performance at the semi.

  5. J K F Irish says:

I really liked this song as being original but I wasn’t surprised it didn’t proceed. He performed it well though.
