Best Semi-Final Non Qualifiers– Over the last two weeks, hundreds of our readers have voted for their Top 5 Best Eurovision entries that did not make it to the final. Each voter had ten points to distribute: 5 to his favorite, 4 to the second place etc. Out of these points we calculated the ultimate Top 15 of your favorite Semi-Final non qualifiers! You can see the other places and our other rankings here! Your place 12 goes to Slovenia!
In 2005, Slovenia sent a casting show winner to Kiev. Omar Naber had won the Slovenian version of “Battle of talents”. He competed with the song “Stop” which he composed himself. Despite the English title and there being two versions of English lyrics for the song, Naber performed in Slovenian. The song features rock elements and is directed at the singer’s lover who cheats on him with another man. Naber sings “In your embrace, because of lies, I bleed out” and “You’ve been marked by his kiss”. At the end of the song he goes to his only (female) backing singer, hugging her. Coming 12th, the song failed to qualify to the final.

Okay, so I just tweeted my manic love for this song, but to reiterate: YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!! One of my favourite Eurovision songs ever. Should. Have. Qualified.
Another one on which I’m on the “other side” than the majority of the fans here; never got the hype over this; not even in my top 10 for 2005.
Yay! Cyprus’s medal on monday can be even gold!
In which sport?????????? YAAAAAAAY!
In sailing (laser) . If so, it will be their first ever olympic medal
YAAAAAAAAAAY!
Greece got second medal today!! It was silver but in the end Chinese got silver and Greeks bronze in rowing!
I still remember when i was in Athens for Olympic games, I was at stadium when Hrysopiyi Devetzi took silver, it was AMAZING atmosphere, I was also at stadium when Athanasia Tsoumeleka came to the end of 20 km race, entered stadium and won gold, all stadium was on fire, i will never forget that!
Yes, we lost the silver on the very last metre of the race
Tbh, I don’t think that we have chances for other medals. It will be our worst result on the medal scoreboard since 1976.
Btw, on tennis men’s match for the bronze, i don’t really know who am I going to support, Del Po or Joko; I like them both. I have a soft spot for Novak though!
Believe it or not, I wasn’t in Athens for the olympics in 2004 but for the paralympics one month later
It was a fantastic experience, indeed.
Have a good night, Marko!
Who knows, you expected bronze in judo? Maybe more surprises will come!
Goods night!
Even though I love “Stop”, I only have it in 5th place on my 2005 semi final list. It was a year with many great songs. My total score would be:
1. Croatia
2. Hungary
3. Israel
4. Monaco
5. Slovenia
6. Norway
7. Latvia
8. Belgium
9. Switzerland
10. Netherlands
11. Andorra
12. Romania
13. Denmark
14. Moldova
15. Poland
16. Iceland
17. Austria
18. Estonia
19. Finland
20. FYR Macedonia
21. Belarus
22. Ireland
23. Bulgaria
24. Lithuania
25. Portugal
Yay, Croatia played in another league. Such a shame it missed the final Top10. And Portugal totally sucked, can’t believe how my own country could give twelve points to it. -.-
About the Slovenian song j’agree as well, it was nice and probably would of been a deserved qualifier but it is really overrated by fans (mainly due to the interpreter’s look methinks).
Hoppla!
I’m very surprised to find this song on such a low place. Judging on the comments, I thought this one easily would be in the Top 5. And it would really deserve it imo. I love this song and especially the way it’s structured; how it rises more and more, reflecting the anger and despair of the singer. And how it finally is vanishing in the air, almost dying. Very powerful and in third place on my personal list.
See? it was a clear favorite with people commenting here and it’s only 12th! A shock! I don’t like esc 2005 at all, but almost all the balkans make it really high in my list : 1st Montenegro, 2nd Croatia, 3rd Romania and 4th Slovenia! It was among the better entries, and it was well sung and performed so why didn’t it qualify while “stuffs” like Macedonia did? Deserves a top 5 but at least it’s in the top 10!
Really good song but extremely forgottable !!! I´m not surprised at all that Slovenia find it hard to be in a final
‘Stop’ is not a very pleasant song to my ears. Omar sings it well though. I love the backing singer who is wearing a great dress, btw. Omar’s choice of attire, on the other hand, is not good at all (the trousers are appalling – this being the silly season, one has to talk about light and bubbly stuff).
I agree with you, I dislike it as well!
Portugal competed in rowing final today, but no medal!!
We got second medal today, silver in shooting!
Hm, so far only one song that I remotely considered voting for, and three songs that leave me stone cold…
It was my 4th choice for this poll following Moldova 08 , San Marino 08 and Estonia 10.
Judging by the comments favoring it before results got announced it’s easy to presume that there are more people voting than writing comments here.
I am waiting to see what’s coming up next
I do agree on this. It was 5th in my list.
I would have put Slovenia 2005 much higher on this list but I guess that we have many people voting here who do not comment … and they probably voted for abysmal stuff like Belgium 2006. Well, we will see.
P. S. I think that Omar’s styling (including the trousers) was perfect. The backings’ hair was terrible though. It looked as if it had a funny smell …

My top 10 for 2005:
1. Slovenia
2. Croatia
3. Andorra
4. Ukraine
5. Denmark
6. Belgium
7. Albania
8. Montenegro
9. Monaco
10. Austria
… and some content from my garbage bin:
35. Estonia
36. Portugal
37. Lithuania
38. Macedonia
39. Belarus
I mixed up Belgium and Monaco …
Great to see that we seem to be a bunch who loves “Vukovi umiru sami”. His singing girls are astonishing and so is the drummer, but in another way. It reminds me of my favourite Eurovision reviewer; Catherine Baker and her hilarious old reviews of Croatian Dora. This was what she had to say about “Vukovi umiru sami”:
“This is Boris Novkovic’s fifth Dora, which was a lucky number for Ivan Mikulic last year. His backing group, “Lado”, are serious folk musicians, at least some of the time. This doesn’t stop them wanting to dress up in silly costumes, or, in the drummer’s case, doodling on his bald head with felt-tip pens and putting on a vest covered in pictures of bare-naked ladies. Vukovi umiru sami has got a bit of Lane moje, a bit of Hari Mata Hari, and just as much of When the spirits are calling my name, all of which are Good Signs but none of which stop Novkovic making a bit of a pig’s ear of it. The rest of the pig has apparently gone to give the bagpiper something to play.”
YAY first medal for Tunisia, Jamaica and Guatemala! Sandra Perkovic from Croatia BRAVO for gold, I’m so surprised Nadine Muller from Germany missed medal completely!
I hope Tunisia get another medal / Habiba Ghribi from Tunsia in steeple chase, I luv her!
Bravo Ranomi Kromowidjojo for second gold, and Herasimenia for second silver! I luv them..
And of course BRAVO Serena!!
:-***
And congrats to Maria Sharapova and Vica Azrenka for silver and bronze! I hope Vica and Max beat Murray and Robson in the final!
Good luck to Andrija Zlatic and Damir Mikec in shooting for us tomorrow, Andrija go or another medal!!
@ Toggie
And what do you think about Antonina Krivoshapka competing in the final of 400 m for women with all other black? Really RESPECT!
Joey Tribbiani was robbed! But sadly, he was not very good in his stage presence. That ruined it for him.
Slovenia almost always send good songs, yet they are terribly underrated most of the time. It’s a pity, I’d love to see them winning some time (although it will not happen very soon… and I’m more eager to see Iceland winning
).
I like a lot of the Slovenian entries. Such a shame many of them do not qualify!
