San Marino: SMTV Faces Severe Cuts

Posted: July 22, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in San Marino

San Marino – The San Marinese Eurovision broadcaster SMTV is facing severe financial cuts as the Italian national broadcaster RAI has to reduce spending. Italy is going through a severe economical crisis at the moment and has to lower its expenses everywhere. Now it is the national broadcaster’s turn to contribute with a reduction in costs. Apparently, San Marinese SMTV, of which RAI holds a 50% share, may be one of the first to suffer severe cuts. Apparently the broadcaster’s head Carmen Lasorella will return to RAI and the entire channel is in danger.

SMTV is the only San Marinese broadcaster which is part of the EBU. It is thus also the only broadcaster which can insure San Marino’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Stay tuned for more infos on this issue.

This would be sad. If Italy couldn’t pay San Marinos small Fee anymore, how could they spend a Big5-Fee? Jury gave them too good Results to withdraw again. When now even Italy have Difficulties, ESC has to become cheeper again!

  4. MIXULA says:

Well, thinking that absolutely nobody of my Italian friends even knew about the contest, and ratings were high only under immigrant populations, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re going to cut it completely.

    Just a thought:
I think that the EBU should consider securing one place in the grand final for the so called microstates which can go through a preliminary round in which only them will compete. That’s, unfortunately, the only possible way I see them ever taking part in the final.

    • skgambassadortoesc says:

Of course in that case issues like: who is consider a microstate and who is not, will probably pop up.

      • Lucky12b says:

There is a Definition, what’s a Microstate. I think, it was 1000m², so, Andorra, San Marino, Monaco, Malta, Liechtenstein & Vatican City would be that Category. But since in such Cases, the Inhabitants are more important than the km² we could compete it with those that have less than 1 Million Inhabitants: Iceland, Luxembourg & Montenegro.

        I would like to have a “Looser-Semifinal” or a Final-Guarantee after a special Number of Fails, too…

    • Scott Hirst says:

That would be a great idea shame they cant have 6 semi finals (Satuarday the week before the grand final to Thursday) They could split the countries up into their respective blocks and only two countries from each block qualify into the final along with the big 5 and the host, and they could also have 2 wildcards out of the countries which did not make it to the final, one of the wild cards could be chosen by the jury and the other by Televote, you would then have 20 participants in the final. It be a great way to cut down block voting in the Semi finals, I’m sure we wouldnt then be seeing Ukraine, Russia and Azerbaijan always qualifying then. The Dislike of your comment is obviously someone from one of those countries who reguarly making it to the final, even when their country send crap.
