Denmark – The Danish national broadcaster DR revealed the rules for the 2013 Danish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in nearby Malmö. Interested songwriters can submit their entries until September 24. All songs can not have been published before September 1 (in keeping with EBU rules). Six of the submitted songs will go on to the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013, with 4 more being invited through wildcards by DR. Foreign songwriters are allowed to enter, but they have to cooperate with a Danish composer or artist.
“We would like to continue the positive development of the Grand Prix, where the songs are modern… Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is not the same as ten years ago. We want hits, which are up to date and are the sounds of 2013,” DR Entertainment manager Jan Lagermand Lundme said.

I LOVED the Danish MGP in 2009 and 2011 (Stine!) and liked 2008 and 2010 but was not thrilled by 2012 though it was decent… hope for the best in 2013!

Good luck to them, in the past 5 years I only liked their 2008 and 2011 entries. The rest was quite bland in my opinion (although in 2010 it was bland but an obvious hit). The last time Sweden hosted Eurovision it was Denmark that won. Who knows, maybe the history will repeat itself?
I think that DR’s approach is pretty boring because it does not leave much room for musical diversity (we have the same problem here in Germany …). In the last 10 years, I only loved one Danish ESC song (2005) and I only liked very few DMGP songs that did not make it, Jeffrey’s ‘Drømmen’ and Aud Wilken’s ‘Husker du’ f. e.
Good luck anyway!
I agree with you and I also want something new, daring and alternative than the very radio friendly tunes that tends to be chosen here.. And somehow I know that 2013 will not be much more different
Unfortunately, I don’t expect anything daring or interesting for next year either. It is as if those in charge of DMGP think that everything that is not radio-friendly must be old-fashioned. That is silly and blinkered. ‘Taken by a Stranger’ f. e. was not radio-friendly but it wasn’t dated either. And it still made a very respectable 10th place. I hope that they won’t avoid anything outside the bland box like the plague next year again but as I have said. I do not have high hopes.
taken by a stranger was a bit edgy style and still modern.. what I mean is you need to come up with something different no matter its placement, just for change instead of we will bring safe save songs
amen!
Perhaps it would be best if Denmark failed to reach the final with one of its ‘safe songs’ once because then it would be evident that they aren’t safe at all … However, so far all the radio-friendly stuff DR has sent since 2008 was safe, at least if we define reaching the final as safe …
it almost failed this year.. I just remember what the danish commentator said right after Sweden won!!! don’t be surprised if you hear a disco tune next year from Denmark

send Medina finally!!
I’m not fond of this development. The songs of DMGP today are bland, radio-friendly and middle of the road. Simply grey-brown without any other more colourful shades. During the last ten years, I have especially liked the songs from Neighbours (not contemporary, but still great) and of course Aud Wilken’s “Husker du”. Katrine Falkenberg’s “It’s a beautiful day” and Kendra Lou’s “Until we’re satisfied” are two other favs.
This is only good thing in ESC together with MF and Norsk MGP! I would like Ditte Marie – “Overflow” from 2012 to represent Denmark in ESC, smth like that!
The statement of the entertainment manager only gives me hope that DMGP will continue on the great track it has settled the last 4 years in terms of musical quality and contemporary sounds. DMGP is one of the few nf that maintains a high level every year. Interesting, modern and well made songs consist the vast majority of the participations and 2012 was not an exception. Denmark is one of my truly favourite countries the last years in esc. 2009, 2011 and 2012 were all years with not only amazing entries but also amazing national finals. Keep going Denmark and hopefully some other countries and national finals will learn something from you.
They DO organize great NF at least visually but let’s be honest : They have been sending almost the same stuff since 2008 ( scoring from 7 to maximum 8 on my list ).
Of course nothing can compare to the DQ ( 2007 ) embarrassment !!!
