Cyprus: Participation in 2013 in Doubt

Posted: June 27, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in Cyprus

Cyprus – One of the many European countries that have to struggle with financial difficulties at the moment is Cyprus. The national broadcaster is not exempt from this development. The national broadcaster CyBC normally has to ask for funds from the state to finance the Eurovision participation. This year cost were considerably reduced by internally selecting Ivi Adamou and a rather low-cost national song selection. Sony Music Greece were willing to support Ivi Adamou financially, but the funds were approved.

Many politicians in Cyprus apparently criticize the country’s participation in Eurovision for its costs and the lack of success. There is thus considerable doubt whether the state will continue to support the Eurovision participation. Ivi Adamou managed to qualify for the final and came 16th. Her song has become a hit in several European countries. If they continue this successful formula, music labels may be interested to fund the Cypriot participation in the future. Stay tuned for more on this issue. CyBC has not confirmed anything as of yet!

I am very confident that Cyprus will send an entry to Sweden next year. They have been in ESC for so many years after all.

  2. Anthony says:

I hope Cyprus doesn’t end up doing the unthinkable otherwise all of Ivi Adamou’s hard work this year would be undone!

Who will Greece vote for now!?

  4. Shevek says:

Choose someone (who can actually sing live) internally and show up somewhere in Sweden, please. :)

  5. gilmour from malta says:

sweden had given 12 points to cyprus . so it mush participate beacuse the host country gave their top marks to them

    • Anthony says:

The reason why Sweden gave the 12 points to Cyprus this year is because Ivi Adamou turned up to Sweden and promoted her entry. The result? Sweden absolutely La La Loved it! Ironically, a Swedish composer was involved on producing La La Love for Ivi Adamou.

I hope Cyprus will eventually confirm participation(and Greece too).

Cyprus and Greece HAVE to participate next year! They are (and especially Greece ;) ) the MASTERS of Eurovision! Cyprus managed to qualify last year and it was their best result since 2004!!! Well done Ivi! And Greece just click with Europe every year (of course politics played its part this year), so yes, good luck to both!

I have serious doubts regarding both Greece and Cyprus and their participation next year, but I think that in the end they will participate. Imho, an internal selection is the proper option for both of them, and in case of Greece, in particular, it would have saved us from that mall fiasco last March.

off topic: I’d prefer that the Portugal vs Spain match was actually the final; these two are my most favourite national teams in the world (apart from Greece that is of course). I hope that the one that qualifies to the final actually wins the trophy on Sunday :)

  10. CC says:

I hope they will take part but ONLY with a cypriot song either in Turkish or Greek.

  11. Steve Goode says:

If Cyprus don’t participate in 2013 it will mean that Greece will not get at least one 12 points.

  12. roselildk says:

    I hope its just rumours!!

  13. Peter says:

I think on the last minute Cyprus will be back in. Although i understand the dissappointment, as i believe that La La Love, if sung by a major country would easily had a top 5 position. So why they should bother? But still i would like Nikolas Metaxas to represent Cyprus (check him on the internet) with a ballad like the ones on his latest album (especially the title track “Square One”)… I think a position in the final would be quaranteed…

  14. babino says:

@CC you always moaning only for Greece and Cyprus songs language. Ok you dont like songs to be in english but 95% of countries ( included your country Germany ) send always songs in english and you dont have any problem . I neevr saw you to moan for other countries english songs or for Germany english songs. And btw all countries pay huge fees in this contest and nobody want to loose the final, and non english song have 95% to stuck in semifinals….
