Eurovision 2013: It’s Stockholm Vs. Malmö

Posted: June 20, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in Sweden

Sweden – The deadline to apply for the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 ended today. Stockholm’s Friends Arena (picture), Malmö Arena and Gothenburg’s Scandinavium all submitted their bids in time. However, poplight.se reports today that Gothenburg has apparently withdrawn its bit, leaving Stockholm and Malmö in the running. Due to a horse race, Gothenburg could not provide the arena for the time needed for the rehearsals.

The factors speaking for Stockholm are the big and modern arena, hotel capacities and a lot of possible touristic activities. However, the Ice Hockey championship will end the weekend before Eurovision week, which may cause problems with hotel capacities. Malmö is a smaller city and very close to Copenhagen. Some argue that the Swedish tourist board will opt against Malmö as many people may book hotels and thus spent their money in Copenhagen. Furthermore the arena is considerably smaller than the Friends Arena.

  1. Malmö? Really? What is the date for the event, I am due to get married around that time of year so I’d better get my chums to book hotels nice and early just in case!

So, I guess that the scenario with Göteborg and Malmö hosting the two semis and Stockholm the grand final has been abandoned… :(

  3. It also does sound like Friend’s Arena would get it… though the repeat of 2000 with a Danish victory in Sweden, this time in Malmö, would have been cool. Same with Gotenbörg for Norwegians… So Globen 16,000 seats, back in 2000 it was enough… how esc has changed!

  4. Roman Lob from Germany won’t make an album?

Did he release his ESC entry as single at all, actually?

  5. And Serbia will get charts soon, OMG I can’t believe! :)

And there is possibility Serbia will withdraw from ESC next year, I hope and pray for that SO MUCH! It was enough of horrible and embarrassing entries..

  6. I hope Poland won’t return next year and Serbia will follow Poland! :)

    @eurovisiontimes,

when will the next “eurovision through the years” article be posted? :P :)

  8. I’m lookinh forward to seeing more Eurovision news! I’m hoping to travel to Sweden for it next year – I’m from Australia.

  9. roselildk says:

Malmö of course :) I hope for the closest one for me ..
btw this is the newest from Rybak

I think it will be Stockholm, I would prefer Gothenborg (because it didn’t host for a long time) or some city that never hosted before.
Out of two I would prefer Malmo, although really, it makes no difference to me, Sweden will do a good job hosting in any city, I think.

  11. kenn907 says:

Wait, I thought the Ice Hockey championship event is after Eurovision, not before?

  12. Allan94 says:

Unrelated, but you should do the official Eurovision videos for the songs. Just sayin’.

  13. IMO Stockholm is a more interesting and more beautiful city than Malmo, but I guess people could easily visit or stay in Copenhagen instead of Malmo. It has been some years since I was in Scandinavia, but I found Malmo extremely dull (sorry to anyone from there!). Nearby Lund is worth a look though, especially the astronomical clock in the cathedral.

  14. I hope at least that the weather will improve, so far June has been rain, rain, rain! I can’t remember ever having such a wet June.

  15. eurovisionboy says:

Its impossible that malmo host the eurovision songcontest , because is to small its for 15,500 people that cannot be possible, friends arena is for 67,500 people and it been sold out next year in no time !
