Sweden – The deadline to apply for the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 ended today. Stockholm’s Friends Arena (picture), Malmö Arena and Gothenburg’s Scandinavium all submitted their bids in time. However, poplight.se reports today that Gothenburg has apparently withdrawn its bit, leaving Stockholm and Malmö in the running. Due to a horse race, Gothenburg could not provide the arena for the time needed for the rehearsals.
The factors speaking for Stockholm are the big and modern arena, hotel capacities and a lot of possible touristic activities. However, the Ice Hockey championship will end the weekend before Eurovision week, which may cause problems with hotel capacities. Malmö is a smaller city and very close to Copenhagen. Some argue that the Swedish tourist board will opt against Malmö as many people may book hotels and thus spent their money in Copenhagen. Furthermore the arena is considerably smaller than the Friends Arena.

Malmö? Really? What is the date for the event, I am due to get married around that time of year so I’d better get my chums to book hotels nice and early just in case!
~The Dippylomat esq.
May 18 ^^ and congrats on the marriage!
So, I guess that the scenario with Göteborg and Malmö hosting the two semis and Stockholm the grand final has been abandoned…
Hello, how are you?
I’m not ESC fan anymore, but i still comment here from time to time..i think that idea is not too smart., because fans want to be in all 3 events usually – both semis and final, so they have to move from one place to another in 5 days..and to book hotels and so on.. it’s quite stupid sorry,
For all I know, if you write comments on an ESC site in mid july talking about host cities that will be relevant in about 8 months… you are an ESC fan!
I asked you smth about notifications in another article, because you are moderator so I supposed you are the the right person to ask that…I can’t see them, maybe some other ppl have the same problem…so i tell you for your good…
And I’m not ESC fan, i just want to see few ppl I appreciate here and to comment from time to time…and sometimes to comment about ESC (I was fan for several years, yeah I confess, i UNFORTUNATELY was, I always confess my mistakes
)
I don’t really understand the problem… For me it is always grey and has always been that way…
No, when somebody replays to you it’s red, but OK if that doesn’t disturb you as moderator, then me even less..
where is it red? In the comment section?
No, in the right corner o the screen! I don’t know to explain, my English is not strong enough to explain that..
There is an icon just left of the username on the far right side of the grey ET bar on top of the site. It works for me.
Hi Marko,
well, you have a point there; it would also demand a bigger budget, i guess. But nevertheless, it would be more than innovative.
PS: sorry to hear that you are not an esc fan anymore.
Hey Marko!!! You are not allowed to call yourself non ESC fan!!! remember you promised me to join with me to ESC next year! of course if it is in Malmö
It also does sound like Friend’s Arena would get it… though the repeat of 2000 with a Danish victory in Sweden, this time in Malmö, would have been cool. Same with Gotenbörg for Norwegians… So Globen 16,000 seats, back in 2000 it was enough… how esc has changed!
Roman Lob from Germany won’t make an album?
Did he release his ESC entry as single at all, actually?
Hi Marko (and a hello to everyone who still is an ESC fan too …)
Roman has had his album ‘Changes’ out since April. It peaked at number 9 in the German album charts.
Hello..
Hi togravus
And Serbia will get charts soon, OMG I can’t believe!
And there is possibility Serbia will withdraw from ESC next year, I hope and pray for that SO MUCH! It was enough of horrible and embarrassing entries..
I hope Poland won’t return next year and Serbia will follow Poland!
As an official non-fan. Why do you care? I suppose you will not even watch the contest next year as it is so horrible, right? I mean there are so many better shows to watch on that Saturday evening…
Maybe I will even watch..who knows, on that evening won’t be any major music event of the World!
And I already told you , maybe it will improve next year, I will of course see songs first and then decide to watch or not, UK, Romania and Sweden have so many great modern singers and songs, maybe they will go for one of them next year and then i will join the contest, as for Serbia and Poland, that is just my which I express, i don’t want countries I love to embarrass themselves any more with shitty entries..for Moldova i don’t care for example, they can stay in the contest even with those horrible shits like “Lautar”, i simply don’t pay attention to that country..
* wish…
Your “non-ESC fanness” is not very convincing to be honest…
Whatever…
@eurovisiontimes,
when will the next “eurovision through the years” article be posted?
I’ll have to write it first ^^ maybe tomorrow
Thank you! …any hint for the year?
either 1959 or 1984
Ok, I’ll be closely following then
Have a good night everyone!
PS: togravus, you got mail
Good night oxi! Looking forward to reading your mail. I will do so once I have finished work …
I’m lookinh forward to seeing more Eurovision news! I’m hoping to travel to Sweden for it next year – I’m from Australia.
Malmö of course
I hope for the closest one for me ..
btw this is the newest from Rybak
Is getting closer to our meeting spot :p
Yes, exactly
Lets pray fro Malmo then :p loll!
I think it will be Stockholm, I would prefer Gothenborg (because it didn’t host for a long time) or some city that never hosted before.
Out of two I would prefer Malmo, although really, it makes no difference to me, Sweden will do a good job hosting in any city, I think.
Wait, I thought the Ice Hockey championship event is after Eurovision, not before?
Unrelated, but you should do the official Eurovision videos for the songs. Just sayin’.
What do you mean?
IMO Stockholm is a more interesting and more beautiful city than Malmo, but I guess people could easily visit or stay in Copenhagen instead of Malmo. It has been some years since I was in Scandinavia, but I found Malmo extremely dull (sorry to anyone from there!). Nearby Lund is worth a look though, especially the astronomical clock in the cathedral.
Hello, how are you?
I have been to Lund, also small town of Ystad near Malmo is great!
Your profile pic is GREAAAAT!
You will attend some sport events in London maybe?
Hi Marko
I haven’t been to Ystad or any other places in Skåne apart from Malmö or Lund. I have visited various places in other parts of Sweden though and I like Sweden a lot.
I didn’t try to get any Olympic tickets, although I will probably go and have a look around the Olympic park when the games are over
And soon Wimbledon tournament will start, and then very soon after that again Wimbledon but Olympic games there! GREAAAT!
You should go to Wimbledon Daniel!!!
:-*
I used to follow Wimbledon every year, but I lost interest.
Yes, when it comes to tourist attractions, no town in Sweden can beat Stockholm. But there’s plenty of towns that are beautiful in their own ways. And I agree with you about Malmö. The town lacks a distinct history in comparison with the close located town of Lund, which has more sights due to its history as a traditional university town. And Lund Cathedral is the prettiest cathedral in Sweden.
I hope at least that the weather will improve, so far June has been rain, rain, rain! I can’t remember ever having such a wet June.
I want rain!!! Here is so warm, every day over 30 and sun, today 35 degrees!
:S
Weatherwise we get all kinds of everything here. One day 22 degrees and rain and then sunshine and 30+ the next day.
I am off to my sister’s birthday party now and will watch Portugal vs Czech Rep. at her place later.
Malmö!
Its impossible that malmo host the eurovision songcontest , because is to small its for 15,500 people that cannot be possible, friends arena is for 67,500 people and it been sold out next year in no time !
