    Bulgaria is searching for a good recipe! Most of them have been overused already so they need to come up with something original to get a good result. :)

    Send Aziz and never regret ;)

    6) I have only listened to 2011 and 2012 songs BUT… 2011′s ‘Na inat’ was a bad song choice mainly because Na inat just sound like made up words. I don’t no if it’s Bulgarian but it doesn’t make much sense here in the UK. Also the song was a bit rock and pop… a mix that doesn’t normally combined well unless it’s Finaland 2006!

    7) 1. GOOD SINGER!
    2. Vocal performance
    3. Good song/lyrics

    Musical preferences: Drum & Bass, upbeat, dance, club, pop, anything that is performed well by a singer.

    TIP: Drum and Bass has never been used at the Eurovision… if it was used for the first time next year I’m sure it would get high votes from the UK as it’s really popular here! :)

  5. dimitrisesc says:

    I’m afraid the answer won’t be found in a recipe.Bulgaria is certainly not a bad esc country.The last couple of years they were close to qualifying.Poli was robbed in 2011.She should be in the final.I’m sure,qualification will follow at some point.I would only add that what they need is a good song(no matter what the genre will be) and a strong live performance,suitable for the song.If they had worked on the stage presentation with “Love unlimited” this year,i’m sure they would have reached the final.

    • Scott Hirst says:

      They have the same problem as Slovakia and Poland, both will often send good entries like Bulgaria but wont qualify to the final and are are underated, or either the live vocals are poor or have bad running orders.

  6. tehoe says:

    I think they should send something like “Illusion” in 2009, but with a proper vocal performance. They should also avoid things like this year’s entry – “Love unlimited” is for me the worst ESC song in years.

    • Scott Hirst says:

      Love Unlimited was probably one of their strongest attempts along with Poli Genova, But then it could be all down to culteral tastes, people in the UK like the song becuase the genre of the song reflected our music tastes (club anthem/remix). I Think they would be best sending a a ballad all in Bulgarian to aviod diction porblems and poor English which is common in most eastern european entries (e.g. Belarus) but then also the west too (Switzerland this year). Cyrillic Langauges can also sound really good in Ballads as shown with the Serbian entries 2007, 2008 and 2012, and the Serbian and Belarusian JESC entries in 2010 and 11. Only thing is though I know the majority of the UK wouldnt vote for an ethnic balkan ballad.

  7. togravus says:

    That is very touching, and since they seem to be desperate, I will do my best to provide answers that might help.
    1. I don’t really care. Just send a song that is memorable and a singer with strong live vocals.
    2. In fact, it was Sofi Marinova, even before she was chosen to represent Bulgaria this year. The diversity of her work and her impressive voice impress me most. Stoyan & Elica, Voda is another Bulgarian song I love.
    3. Slavi Trifonov & Sofi Marinova, Ljubovta e otrova
    4. Lorrain (2005)
    5. I don’t really care although I personally prefer songs in national languages
    6. A. there was nothing wrong with it, a bit too understated perhaps
    B. there was nothing wrong with it. The song simply did not have wide appeal, in particular in central, western and northern Europe
    C. the song was good for a club but not for a televised song contest. The vocals were pretty weak too
    D. everything, the song, the screechy vocals and the messy performance
    E. the song was very weak and the presentation was terribly tacky. Plus Miro did not come across as a likeable guy, too full of himself
    F. absolutely nothing. Poli should have sailed into the final
    G. although I personally prefer dance songs being performed without dancers onstage, I think that some dancers would have done the trick
    7. Vocal performance – camera angles – stage effects – lighting
    8. France 2009 – Albania 2012 – BiH 2009 – Serbia 2007 – Serbia 2008
    9. Serbia 2007 – Germany 2010 – BiH 2009 – Estonia 2009 – Sweden 2012
    30-45 years
    Germany
    Classical, rock, ethic music, indie, singer-songwriter
    All in all, Bulgaria is among those unfortunate countries that have no guaranteed points and need a much stronger effort than many others to reach the final. :(

    d.) “Illusion” (2009);
    • Answer: This kind of stuff doesn’t appeal to many people
    e.) “Angel si ti / You’re angel” (2010);

    Musical preferences: Dance, novelty, pop, some rock

  9. Patrick P. says:

    1. What style of song do you expect from Bulgaria in 2013?

    • Answer: Any except for C. I don’t think that Bulgaria needs to lose itself to do well, and if the country does, I’d rather they stay true to themselves anyway.

    2. [Open response] Which Bulgarian artist is most well-known or famous to you? What impresses you about their work? Note the artist’s songs that you think are appropriate for “Eurovision”.

    • Answer: Honestly, I don’t really follow Bulgarian music. I only really know those that have participated in ESC, and of those, Poli Genova is the one that impressed me the most. She has great charisma, a great voice, and I find her to be a wonderful person off-stage, as well.

    3. [Open response] Which Bulgarian song has left the most lasting mark in your mind? What impresses you about it?

    • Answer: “Na Inat” by Poli Genova. Look to the above for what impresses me about Poli herself. As for the song, it is one of those songs that doesn’t really impress me nor does it hurt anything. I actually really like how it ended though. The last line of lyrics seems to haunt the air after the song has finished.

    4. [Open response] Specify the best Bulgarian entry that did not qualify to the Eurovision Song Contest final.

    • Answer: “Na Inat” by Poli Genova

    5. Which language should Bulgarian entries to the Eurovision Song Contest be performed in?

    a.) Bulgarian;
    b.) English;
    c.) Bilingual combination of Bulgarian and English;

    d.) Other;

    • Answer: I personally prefer A the most, but I wouldn’t mind any other choice on this list.

    6. [Open response] List any flaws you think affected the song and stage presentation from the list below;

    a.) “Lorraine” (2005); Not memorable, lack of visual appeal on stage (too little movement, even for the type of song; somewhat awkward movements when there is movement), lyrics that can sound silly to native English speakers (“I can still remember Lorraine in the rain.”)

    b.) “Let me cry” (2006); Below average vocals in the verses, bad draw in the running order, odd use of the female dancers that, too much inflection on the vocals late in the song (WAY too much), backing vocalist upstaged the lead

    c.) “Dj, take me away” (2008); Badly-composed song, sudden cuts between the two vastly different elements that make up the song, bad vocals

    d.) “Illusion” (2009); EXTREMELY bad vocals, niche song that has no appeal outside of the niche, awful stilt walkers dancing, bad costumes, pretty much everything.

    e.) “Angel si ti / You’re angel” (2010); Extremely unmemorable song, song that would do well as a radio song but does not translate to stage well

    f.) “Na inat” (2011); Nothing? The only thing that comes close to a problem is that her top makes it look like she might have had a wardrobe malfunction, and that’s extremely minor. I have no idea how this didn’t make finals.

    g.) “Love Unlimited” (2012); Lack of dancers to really make the song pop. The song already overperformed when compared to international expectations for the song, and I’m sad this didn’t make finals either.

    7. [Open response] Arrange the following elements of the song presentation in order of importance: choreography, vocal performance, lighting, camera angels and stage effects (graphics, pyro effects, etc..). You can add more elements at your own discretion.

    • Answer: Vocal performance, choreography, lighting, camera angels, stage effects

    8. [Open response] Specify up to 5 songs that have impressed you most in “Eurovision” between 2005 and 2012.

    • Answer: Armenia 2009, Albania 2012, Slovenia 2007, Malta 2005, and Serbia 2011

    9, [Open response] Which performances in “Eurovision” between the period 2005 to 2012 do you consider as the best in terms of production design and visual presentation?

    • Answer: Ukraine 2011, Estonia 2009, Serbia 2007, Bosnia & Herzegovina 2008, Albania 2010

    Note the following additional information for you:

    Age:
    - 16-20 years;

    Name: Patrick
    Country: United States of America
    Musical preferences: Classical ballad, ethnic pop, novelty, operatic

  10. nprovenghi271 says:

    I freaking love this idea of getting international input this way, as opposed to the Melodifestivalen route of just having foreign juries vote for a song.

    1. What style of song do you expect from Bulgaria in 2013?
    a.) Fast dance pop song;
    b.) Ballad with ethnic elements;
    c.) Ballad in American / Western European type;
    d.) Ballad with rock elements;
    f) Rock;
    f.) Jazz, soul, alternative;
    g.) Fast song with ethnic elements;
    h.) Other (please state);

    • Answer: I tend to prefer uptempo songs, so anything like that would sit really well with me. However, as long as it’s a quality production, I’d be excited about Bulgaria.

    2. [Open response] Which Bulgarian artist is most well-known or famous to you? What impresses you about their work? Note the artist’s songs that you think are appropriate for “Eurovision”.

    • Answer: Honestly, I only know Bulgarian artists through Eurovision, so if it’s an answer, I’d have to say Sofi Marinova, just because I like her song the most.

    3. [Open response] Which Bulgarian song has left the most lasting mark in your mind? What impresses you about it?

    • Answer: I’d say “Water” from 2007 has left the most lasting mark for me because of the staging and energy of the song.

    4. [Open response] Specify the best Bulgarian entry that did not qualify to the Eurovision Song Contest final.

    • Answer: “Love Unlimited” by a mile.

    5. Which language should Bulgarian entries to the Eurovision Song Contest be performed in?

    a.) Bulgarian;
    b.) English;
    c.) Bilingual combination of Bulgarian and English;
    d.) Other;

    • Answer: I actually don’t care. Like I said earlier, as long as the song is a high quality production, I’ll be happy.

    6. [Open response] List any flaws you think affected the song and stage presentation from the list below;
    a.) “Lorraine” (2005);
    • Answer: The song was too slow for a song contest that depends on instant appeal. The camera angles were also too wide and flowy for the song, so it was hard to focus on someone.

    b.) “Let me cry” (2006);
    • Answer: For me, the most glaring issue was the fact that I couldn’t hear the lead singer during the chorus. Again, the camera work could’ve been tighter. However, it was a step up from 2005.

    c.) “Dj, take me away” (2008);
    • Answer: The main problem is that the musician (who I believe was also the lyricist) spent way too much time crafting a really good electro song that was infused with ethnic elements. However, the lyrics just seem to be an afterthought. Other than that, a very solid entry.

    d.) “Illusion” (2009);
    • Answer: Ouch. This was rough. First, one of the backing singers was trying to sing louder than the lead singer, which made the already messy vocal performance seem worse. Add to that the seemingly random stilt dancers and brash staging, it’s no wonder that this song didn’t qualify.

    e.) “Angel si ti / You’re angel” (2010);
    • Answer: This song is more radio friendly, which, depending on your perspective, might be a good thing. However, the staging made it seem trashier and cheaper than it really was (even though it was kind of cheap to begin with).

    f.) “Na inat” (2011);
    • Answer: I’d say that this is one of the better Bulgarian entries, so I can’t really say anything too bad about it. The only problem I see is that the use of the Bulgarian language might have thrown some people off, but that is by no means a dismissal of any future use of Bulgarian.

    g.) “Love Unlimited” (2012);
    • Answer: Again, this continues the streak of improving Bulgarian entries and the results show! I think that having Sofi all alone on the stage was a great idea and made it seem really fresh and different. However, at the end, the one long wide shot might have been a bad idea. Other than that, there wasn’t any thing wrong with “Love Unlimited.” In fact, it’s my favorite Bulgarian entry ever!

    7. [Open response] Arrange the following elements of the song presentation in order of importance: choreography, vocal performance, lighting, camera angels and stage effects (graphics, pyro effects, etc..). You can add more elements at your own discretion.

    • Answer: Vocal performance, song quality, lighting, stage effects, camera angles, choreography.

    8. [Open response] Specify up to 5 songs that have impressed you most in “Eurovision” between 2005 and 2012.

    • Answer: Germany 2010, Iceland 2008, the Netherlands 2012, Azerbaijan 2012, Iceland 2011

    9, [Open response] Which performances in “Eurovision” between the period 2005 to 2012 do you consider as the best in terms of production design and visual presentation?

    • Answer: Azerbaijan 2012, Norway 2009, Iceland 2008, Cyprus 2010, Turkey 2010

    Note the following additional information for you:

    - Under 16 years;
    - 16-20 years;
    - 20-30 years;
    - 30-45 years;
    - Over 45 years;

    • Answer: 16-20 years (16 years old)

    Name: Nicholas
    Country: United States (New Mexico)
    Musical preferences: Electro-pop, alternative rock, dance and folksy-pop.

    Good luck Bulgaria! Hope to see you in an envelope come May!

  11. skgambassadortoesc says:

    Would it help them with their survey, if I’d say that I’m dying to see sth like the following for Bulgaria in the ESC?

    My most fav bulgarian entry is undoubtedly “Voda”; actually it’s in my all time ESC top50.
    Good luck in 2013 neighbours!

  12. Scott Hirst says:

    BBC should take the same approach as the Bulgarian Broadcaster, However they wouldn’t care a toss what the rest of Europe thought about our entries. and I know this is slightly off topic but apparently they have confirmed participation, But they are planning a national final this time as they think we maybe able to build on Jade Ewen’s sucess, as she was selected in the same way.

    • Beatle says:

      I agree! and are they really doing a national final? Where did you hear this from?

      • Scott Hirst says:

        visit the Wikipeddia page for ESC 2013 and theres a link to a site where it says, plus some of the tabloids have also reported of their being a national final, only problem with that is whether the national final will be any good, if its like 2009 theres no problem but anything else we could be sending crap again, the people who mainly vote in the national finals dont seem to care about what we send so vote for shit, thats why we have had Kitch Jemini, Josh and Scooch representing us in the past.

  13. Rifat Harsya says:

    1. What style of song do you expect from Bulgaria in 2013?
    - I want Bulgaria to consider and call the international composers next year. I prefer something different from this country, RnB mixed by classical ballad would be interesting.

    2. [Open response] Which Bulgarian artist is most well-known or famous to you? What impresses you about their work? Note the artist’s songs that you think are appropriate for “Eurovision”.
    - Honestly I dont know all about Bulgarian singers, but I recently know about Bulgarian x factor’s contestants named Raffi Boghosyan and Bogomil Bonev. I watch them on youtube and I’ve to say that they have good vocal performances.

    3. [Open response] Which Bulgarian song has left the most lasting mark in your mind? What impresses you about it?
    - Love Unlimited by Sofi , her voice is unique and she reminds me with indian female singers. Sorry I just give my opinion from vocal aspects , her song actually is still OK.

    4. [Open response] Specify the best Bulgarian entry that did not qualify to the Eurovision Song Contest final.
    - Sofi Marinova

    5. Which language should Bulgarian entries to the Eurovision Song Contest be performed in?
    - The song and lyric is more important.

    6. [Open response] List any flaws you think affected the song and stage presentation from the list below;
    - I’ve just watched Sofi’s performance this year. She was very confident and at stage without backing vocals and dancers, good job.

    7. [Open response] Arrange the following elements of the song presentation in order of importance: choreography, vocal performance, lighting, camera angels and stage effects (graphics, pyro effects, etc..). You can add more elements at your own discretion.
    1.Song quality

    d.) Other;

    • Answer: Bulgarian – its how it used to be years ago when Eurovision was at its best for song quality. Keep it in your native language it adds a certain mysterious edge to the song. Plus its doesn’t always translate correctly into English and you can end up sounding a little silly!

    6. [Open response] List any flaws you think affected the song and stage presentation from the list below;

    • Answer: very boring song, nothing exciting about the performance or the song

    e.) “Angel si ti / You’re angel” (2010);

    f.) “Na inat” (2011); l
    • Answer: oved that she didn’t sing in english, wasn’t a fan of the rock edge to it, didn’t seem to suit the rest of it. A decent performance, Bulgaria hard done by again!

    g.) “Love Unlimited” (2012);
    • Answer: Can’t get enough of this song, it can’t be faulted. The performance however her dress sense was all off. Not wanted to sound bad but she should have dressed more conservativly for her age.

    • Answer: I would love to see a band or singer-songwriter perform for Bulgaria in 2013, I don’t mind really about the style.

    2. [Open response] Which Bulgarian artist is most well-known or famous to you? What impresses you about their work? Note the artist’s songs that you think are appropriate for “Eurovision”.

    • Answer: To be honest, I don’t really know much about the Bulgarian music scene, but I was impressed by Poli Genova when she represented Bulgaria as she had a good voice, stage presence and seemed really nice off stage as well.

    3. [Open response] Which Bulgarian song has left the most lasting mark in your mind? What impresses you about it?

    • Answer: Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov – “Voda”, because it sounded entirely unique with it’s combination of ethnic Bulgarian and modern techno sounds and was performed live with great energy.

    4. [Open response] Specify the best Bulgarian entry that did not qualify to the Eurovision Song Contest final.

    • Answer: Poli Genova – “Na inat”

    5. Which language should Bulgarian entries to the Eurovision Song Contest be performed in?

    a.) Bulgarian;
    b.) English;
    c.) Bilingual combination of Bulgarian and English;
    d.) Other;

    • Answer: I think it depends on the song. A ballad or ethnic-tinged song can work well in Bulgarian or Bulgarian-English, whereas contemporary and up-tempo songs seem to do better when they are performed in English.

    6. [Open response] List any flaws you think affected the song and stage presentation from the list below;
    a.) “Lorraine” (2005);
    • Answer: A nice, chilled-out song that was well performed, but probably a little too low-key for Eurovision.
    b.) “Let me cry” (2006);
    • Answer: A fairly decent ballad, but the singing wasn’t great, especially towards the end. It was over-choreographed, and the backing singer’s solo during the bridge didn’t fit in with the rest of the song whatsoever.
    c.) “Dj, take me away” (2008);
    • Answer: The electro part of the song was good and the presentation was memorable, however, the reggae part didn’t fit in with the performance at all.
    d.) “Illusion” (2009);
    • Answer: The song itself had little appeal to an audience outside Bulgaria and vocally it was very weak. The presentation was overblown and didn’t complement the song well.
    e.) “Angel si ti / You’re angel” (2010);
    • Answer: There was nothing terribly wrong with this performance, it’s just that it was nowhere near special enough to make it through to the final.
    f.) “Na inat” (2011);
    • Answer: I still don’t know how this didn’t qualify. The only thing I can think of that might have limited it’s appeal was the fact it was sung in Bulgarian, but apart from that, it was a strong, catchy song that was good vocally and well presented.
    g.) “Love Unlimited” (2012);
    • Answer: The camera angles made the huge stage look very empty with only Sofi on stage. I think it would have looked better and more complete with some dancers on stage. The costuming could have been better too…

    7. [Open response] Arrange the following elements of the song presentation in order of importance: choreography, vocal performance, lighting, camera angels and stage effects (graphics, pyro effects, etc..). You can add more elements at your own discretion.

    I liked Bulgaria’s song this year, but the production of the track was kind of dorky and the performance was unmemorable. I like to see Moldova-style stuff coming out of E. Europe. I don’t know if I’m the best to say, though. I love, say, the use of Bulgarian elements in Dubstar Bugarskji by Shantel. I don’t know if that’s for everyone.
    I hate most ballads. Sometimes there is a nice one (like Serbia this year). Mostly they are no fun.
