Finnish Jury Results Show Points for Neighbours

Posted: June 5, 2012 by hulluna in Eurovision Song Contest 2012, Finland

Finnish broadcaster YLE was one of the first to announce their jury votes this year, with them giving their neighbours Sweden 12 points, Estonia 10 points and Denmark 8 points. The Finnish jury was made up of Anne Hautala (presenter, journalist), Christina Wheeler (musician), Freeman (musician), Maki Kolehhmainen (producer, musician) and Leri Leskinen (producer, musician). The Finnish Jury’s voting in the Grand Final was as follows:

12 Sweden
10 Estonia
8 Denmark
7 Spain
6 Russia
5 Iceland
4 France
3 Germany
2 Albania
1 Norway

The final combined result was:

12 Sweden
10 Estonia
8 Russia
7 Iceland
6 Albania
5 Denmark
4 Ireland
3 Spain
2 Serbia
1 Germany

It appears that the Finnish public voted in numbers for Ireland’s Jedward who received 4 points in the combined vote despite receiving nothing from the jury, but the public did not vote for France. Despite support from the jury, France’s Anggun ended up getting nothing in the combined vote.

6 points to Russia? Must have been because they were singing in a Finnish-Ugric language…

  2. Dino Mil says:

Still juries voting for France but not for Romania, Greece and Cyprus. Either their taste in up-tempo songs is just sad or they vote (again) for the flag…France was abysmal in many respects…

    • togravus says:

I rank France, Cyprus and Romania all in my 20s so no big difference in quality there imo.

Greece on the other hand was bad, really bad.

      • Dino Mil says:

Well I have different views on this. Compared to ”Echo” I prefer ”Aphrodisiac”. Also Romania anf Cyprus delivered a better show than France…everyone could spot it. None was talking about France during the ESC week. It will be shame if it scored better than the others in the combined jury votes.

        • Gio says:

Yep definitely agree with Dino Mil! Greece were AMAZING. Cyprus were also FANTASTIC! And Romania walked all over France! Greece and Cyprus were my favourites. France gave a terrible performance and deserved their final ranking. Greece and Cyprus on the other hand…politics is the only word i have to say. ;)

          • togravus says:

Yawn! We know that Greece is always the best … even if they sent abysmal cr*p like this year … Televoters in the UK, Germany and some other countries prove that year after year after year …

            LOL and no further comment!

            • Dino Mil says:

But other televoters proved the same thing with other countries song. But for some reason you do not mention it at all…(maybe because you liked the song; but this does not make you fair).

Also Toggie if you visit youtube you will see that ppl from other countries liked Greece. Wait to see the combined result. I suspect Greece received high points from countries with no Greek diaspora at all.

              • togravus says:

Well, as with televoting the jury points are a case of regional taste too. However, whereas the German televoting points more or less reflect the taste of our immigrant communities only, the jury sort of reflects what Germany as a whole likes best. You know that I love Greece 2011 but find Denmark 2012 only so-so. Now, if you asked 100 people on the street which song they prefered, 95 would pick Denmark. Out of the remaining five, three would have Levantine ancestry and the other two would be world music lovers. I would have been delighted if our jury had given points to Greece last year but if they had it would have been pretty awkward at the same time. It would not have felt right within the framework of what is popular here outside ESC. I even dare predict that if you asked 100 people on the street here whether they prefered France or Greece this year, at least 75 would pick France because Anggun’s song is closer to what people normally listen to in Germany. If Greece has more ‘German’ clicks on youtube and more downloads on itunes Germany nevertheless, this doesn’t tell us much about the popularity of the songs here because only a certain segment of society uses the like/dislike function on YT (I have never used it because I find it silly. Why should anyone be interested in my taste, and in an anonymous way in addition?) or downloads songs on the net. Most people do not buy music but have an opinion nevertheless.

Finally, since the introduction of televoting, 100s of points have been dedicated from West to East every year even before the 1st song was chosen. In contrast to less fortunate countries in ESC, Greece (from Germany and UK besides Cyprus), Turkey (Germany, France, Azerbaijan etc.), Moldova (Portugal, Romania), Romania (Spain), Lithuania (Ireland) and some others can vote for themselves which is terribly unfair. Don’t you think that there should be a place for Central and Western European taste in ESC too? After all it is supposed to be a celebration of our continent’s diversity. And if the Western juries do not vote for Greece, it is cultural and not political, just like the televote bias is (mainly) cultural. If Greece had sent ‘Kuula’, our jury would have loved and supported the song.

                • Dino Mil says:

A long answer only to refer to the German standards. Thank you very much but it does not reflect the European preferences at all Here in UK ppl enjoyed Greece more than France. BBC commendators almost laughed during the French act…I have never said that juries voted politically; I have just voiced my opinion with regards to a possible ”picky strategy” from them.

                  • togravus says:

The British always laugh at the French … it is a quite pathological reaction because France is the land of culture.
Oh my, why did I waste my time trying to discuss these things with you? Should’ve known better … :(

                    • Dino Mil says:

Why are you cynical suddenly? And LOL on ”France land of culture”. Dear, all countries have culture not only France… Well it is me then that wasted his time…I used BBC as an example to show you that trends are very different from country to country. Anyway this year I realised how selfish you can become when some ppl are challenging your comments. Insisting when some ppl give you a different approach on a subject it is not appealing. It reminds me of the usual UK moaning after their bad results…

                      My points were:

                      1. If it is to bush Greece for televtoing pattens you should refer to Turkey, FYR Macedonia and Albania as well. If you do not want to do so then simply distance yourself from such debates.

                      2. That ppl from many countries liked Greee 2012 is a fact you can assume from various blogs, youtube and esc related websites. If you fail to see this it is because you did not like the song at all. But this is just your opinion, not a fact.

You can disagree (i.e. with Greece 2012 and Russia as your 2012 ”monstrosity obsessions”) but try to be as objective as possible otherwise you make yourself look prosaic. Ppl liked them!

          • Dino Mil says:

Greece was not amazing. I just compared it with France; it does not mean I liked it. Also I wouldn’t say there were politics going on. I hust get the feeling that juries to some extent ”play” with their votes by being picky with ”specific countries”.

  3. France for the second time, after Portugal out of 3 juries got points from them… I wonder how France ranked with the juries!

  4. paschalisb says:

I really wonder what the 100% televoting/100% jury results are like. I’m almost certain Sweden won both, but the top 10 may differ a lot.

    • Dino Mil says:

Exactly Paschali. I think Cyprus, Greece and Romania did top10 with tele-vitng but failed with juries. Countries like Estonia, Germany and Iceland scored well with juries. Russia might failed with juries but not so bad in the end. What I can not figure out are the results of SF2 and SF1 only in one element. Who was the runway winner of juries? Iceland? And if yes, did they do extremely bad with tele-voting? Overall they cam 8th. I can’t beleive ppl ignored Iceland massively. The same goes to Denmark. Therefore I believe it is Albania. Clear winner with juries and just-miss-out case with tele-voting. I guess it makes more sense.

      • dimitrisesc says:

I think Denmark was the song that made it because of the juries.Hungary would be my second guess.Greece qualified because of the televote(2nd or 3rd place)and was ignored by the juries.

        • Dino Mil says:

Dimitris don’t forget it was ”a runaway” winner. Hungary and Denmakr IMO do not fit in this description. I agree on Greece. Greece repeated Russia 2011.

  5. dimitrisesc says:

Yes you are right but i find it hard to believe that Albania missed the televoting top-10 in the 1st semi. The first results from the juries show that Albania was voted by televoting. So,it must have been Iceland or Denmark.

    • Dino Mil says:

”The first results from the juries show that Albania was voted by televoting”. IMO it is not clear. Albania in SF1 can be an Israel 2010 scanario with only one exception; they won the jury vote by landslide thus offering them a second place. In the final it was easier for them to scored better (if we compare it with other similar entries like Israel 2010 and France 2009) given the voting patters that always benefitted them. Looking to the scoreboard you will see that Albania did really well where we expected it to be, therefore their success was not so widespread.

      • dimitrisesc says:

For instance, the Finnish votes show that Albania did better with the televoting there than with the juries and in Germany they must have scored around 5 pts with the televoting,By the way,the first results show that Estonia and Germany were clear jury favorites but i believe they didn’t do that well with the televoters.

        • Dino Mil says:

Agre on Germany and Estonia (you can definitely add Spain as well), it was obvious during the voting. When Sweden start pulling off the others did so as well. At the same time Greece declined dramatically. Also it was then when Denmark and Iceland received some points…as we now the voting order is defined only after the jury results…

  6. chinaescfans says:

Sweden and Estonia weren’t in Semifinal 1, How can juries vote for them in Semifinal 1?

  7. Beatle says:

So wait..the jury gave 1 point to Norway but when the televotes were combined this was discounted towards the final result?

I guess Televotes really do make a different in the final result. Not just the jury :-|

  8. So the Finnish televoting most probably looks like :
    12 : Sweden
    10 : Russia
    8 : Estonia
    7 : Ireland
    6 : Albania
    5 : Iceland/Serbia
    4 : Iceland/Serbia
3 -2 -1 : Could be any country BUT Denmark France or Spain…

Juries voting for an ACT like France ( even with 4 points ) shows exactly how some countries can get away with anything when it comes to juries…

  9. CC says:

The usual political voting. No further comments needed.

  10. HeyHey says:

Greece was really AMAZING..!! Also Sweden was the only one that deserved the first place..!!! <3 Serbia was really good..!! Russia was really sexy this year..! ;) Albania:GREAT VOICE..!

  11. guitaristbl says:

Just a quick observation on the jurie votes : what I have seen so far is encouraging and diverse yet again containing ballads, uptempo numbers etc at balanced numbers…It’s a pity that the Italian televote and many others I am sure are nowhere as close with the usual political stuff going on.. A northern jurie giving 7p to a ballad like Spain’s is only encouraging of course. The Finnish televoters did do one good thing though : voting for Ireland.

  12. Thoughts says:

    1. PLEASE FIX THIS ARTICLE. The Finnish jury did NOT vote for GERMANY (or Sweden or Estonia or Spain or Serbia) in SEMIFINAL ONE!

    2. Are we ever going to see the jury / televote splits this year? The EBU released those immediately last year.

    3. I like the studio version of the Greek song this year (one of my favorites), but it sounded odd live, as it was obvious the background vocalist was carrying the song. If you can’t sing and dance at the same time, then don’t.
