Editorial – It’s all over… not quite yet. To avoid the hole and the famous AED, After Eurovision Depression, we can rejoice in chart positions, analysis and more concerning this year’s contest. Here now my personal impressions from last night’s final. Please add your comments at the end of the article! An analysis of the placings and the voting will follow in the coming days!
First of all, the fireworks and the view of Baku bay with the Crystal arena were really amazing! It reminded my of an Opening ceremony for Olympic games. Too bad Azerbaijan was refused to host the Summer Games without a single vote the same day (probably a wise choice).
The hosts were stiff as always, but I like that the three hosts idea seems to be the usual now. I think its the right amount, if one is annoying you at least have the other two. Eldar was way too fake last night. A pitty.
My highlights:
- Sweden’s performance
- Serbia’s performance
- Anke Engelke mentioning democracy for Germany
- Mr. Lordi’s six hot babes
- The fireworks at the beginning
- Greece not making the Top 10 (the song really deserved the result it got)
- That note by Spain
- The Top 10 being almost completely great (except for Russia)
- Spain making the Top 10, they deserved some remedy
- Sweden getting the top marks 18 times!
- Russia giving Sweden 12 points and not their alleged “friends”
- My country (Germany) making it into the Top 10 for the third year in a row (even though I don’t think we deserved it!)
My “lowlights”:
- Greece-Cyprus, Azerbaijan-Turkey, Moldova-Romania points exchange
- Safura from Azerbaijan telling Azerbaijan they have produced the “Best show ever”… erm yeah
- The president’s son-in-law, yiikes
- Russia beating Zeljko
- Russia coming second
- Lithuania’s “performance”
- Greece and Cyprus’ performance… Please go back to OPA,San aggelos s’agapisa
- Iceland coming 20th
About the Result:
01 -
– Sweden – Loreen – Euphoria – 372 points
100% deserved winner. This will be the biggest hit Eurovision has produced in 30 years and will hopefully boost the credibility of the contest. I really think Eurovision has reached the 21st century with this. Additionally, I think Sweden will take the contest to a new level next year!
02 –
– Russia – Buranovskiye Babushki – Party For Everybody – 259 points
A musical and vocal horror. I’m happy this didn’t win, but I didn’t want it to do so well. It was an inevitability that people would vote for the sweet grandmas and they certainly added to the entertainment factor of the show. Thank god we had Loreen this year!
03 –
– Serbia – Zeljko Joksimovic – Nije ljubav stvar -214 points
Completely deserved every single point he got. Should’ve been #2! He should break his promise and come back! Third times a charm!!
04 –
– Azerbaijan – Sabina Bayeva – When The Music Dies – 150 points
I didn’t expect this to do this well! She sang well and all, but the song was a bit too boring for me. Well Azerbaijan seems to be a certain Top 10 and almost Top 5 country?
05 –
– Albania – Rona Nishliu - Suus – 146 points
Wow! Great she made it to the Top 5. It was a special song and performance and I’m happy for everyone here who loved the entry. I think mostly juries and the Kosovaran diaspora helped this, but it certainly got points from “normal” viewers as well. Very happy with the place!
06 –
– Estonia – Ott Lepland – Kuula – 120 points
Wonderful! Completely deserved the place! I’m happy it did so well!
07 –
– Turkey – Can Bonomo – Love me back – 112 points
This is exactly the place I would’ve given to Turkey, not too high, but not low either. Happy with that as well.
08 –
– Germany – Roman Lob – Standing Still – 110 points
He performed really well, I still don’t see the appeal of the song, but I’m happy for my country. According to Spiegel, the ARD is discussing several new formats for the national selection. I still hope I might get my German Melodifestivalen!
09 –
– Italy – Nina Zilli – L’amore è femmina (Out Of Love) – 101 points
Something was wrong with the backings, and the dress didn’t fit the feel of the song. I was disappointed with the performance, so I think 9th is a good place for her!
10 –
– Spain – Pastora Soler – Quédate conmigo – 97 points
WOW. That note, that performance! Amazing! The song was a bit too dull though. Very deserved Top 10 placing! With Spain, Italy and Germany making the Top 10, France and the UK can’t use the Big5 are hated excuse!
11 –
– Moldova – Pasha Parfeny- Lăutar – 81 points
Fun performance, late draw. Deserved place!
12 –
– Romania – Mandinga – Zaleilah – 71 points
I thought this would do much better. I think televoting may have had this much higher! All in all probably also deserved!
13 –
– FYR Macedonia – Kaliopi – Crno i belo – 71 points
I loved it and think she would’ve deserved a better place, but the song was not instant enough ans many may have thought this was too strange. Still Kaliopi can be proud!
14 –
– Lithuania – Donny Montell – Love is blind – 70 points
What? What? Really? I will never understand the appeal of the song or the performance. My dead last yesterday and completely ridiculous in my eye. But well I gotta have something to nag about, no? ^^
15 –
– Ukraine – Gaitana – Be my guest – 65 points
Too loud, too messy. Deserved place, maybe even lower.
16 –
– Cyprus – Ivi Adamou - La La Love – 65 points
I’m very happy this didn’t do as well as I expected! Sorry for Cyprus as they had less success with way better songs (last year for example), but this kind of simple song with a bad singer doesn’t deserve anything else! Happy for them they beat their big brother as well ^^
17 –
– Greece – Eleftheria Eleftheriou – Aphrodisiac – 64 points
Soo happy! So Greece is not booked for the Top 10, then… Bad performance, bad singing, very bad song. Come back next year with something great and I will support you! This dancing pretty lady stuff is over!
18 –
– Bosnia-Herzegovina – Maya Sar – Korake ti znam – 55 points
A nice song and it would deserve to be ahead of Ukraine, Cyprus and Greece, but all in all the boring performance and too boring song got what it deserved.
19 –
– Ireland – Jedward – Waterline – 46 points
Uninspired performance, worse song than last year and no novelty factor. I thought their fans would push them higher, but apparently the Jedwardmania is over. Good! Now Ireland can start the post-Jedward era!
20 –
– Iceland – Gréta Salóme & Jónsi – Never Forget – 46 points
I feel sorry for them! I loved the song and performance, I think they should’ve done much better. But anyway, that’s Eurovision!
21 –
– Malta – Kurt Calleja – This is the night – 41 points
Got what it deserved!
22 –
– France – Anggun – Echo (You and I) – 21 points
Got what it deserved as well! Too messy, too much trying to be “Eurovision”.. If you look at the Top 10, there is no such thing as a “Eurovision song” anymore (already was like that in 2010!)
23 –
– Denmark – Soluna Samay – Should’ve Known Better – 21 points
I guess Germany coming after them killed their chances + the outfit may have damaged them in favor of Germany. Still Denmark can do better next year!
24 –
– Hungary – Compact Disco – Sound of Our Hearts - 19 points
The song is nice, the performance well, but it was somehow too forgetable. When I heard it I liked it, but when thinking about the best songs I never thought of Hungary somehow. So understandable result, but probably not deserved.
25 –
– United Kingdom – Engelbert Humperdink – Love Will Set You Free – 12 points
Completely deserved result in my book! I hope the media in the UK don’t blame this on voting blocks and the old stereotypes about Eurovision. It was a forgettable song, with an uninspired performance and a washed-out singer. If the rumors are true that Katie Melua and Hurts asked the BBC to represent the UK, this is even more deserved. The motherland of Pop, of The Beatles and Adele can do better than that!
26 –
– Norway – Tooji – Stay – 7 points
This one I really don’t get. I thought the song was really catchy. His singing was atrocious, but people didn’t seem to mind with Cyprus or Greece. There must be an explanation… Maybe my theory applies to this: The stereotypes people have in mind about Norway were not realized in this song. Maybe some voted for Azerbaijan or Turkey that wanted to vote for this song… Still I like that Norway sent a multicultural entry and feel sorry they came last AGAIN.
The interval act was atrocious. He really thought that this was his big breakthrough.. pathetic. He seemed arrogant and couldn’t sing at all! This was even worse than the German interval act last year!
Conclusion: So all in all the best final in years for me song-wise. So many highlights and good performances, a very satisfying result and a worthy winner that will help Eurovision in the long run I think! The host country was hospitable and well-organized but the bitter feeling that there was something below the feeling ruined it just a little bit!
I had more to say, but I can’t remember right now ^^ So what were your thoughts last night?

austria deserved the last place! rarely ever heard such rubbish at esc!
Good analysis ! My main disagreement has to do with Jedward – their definately not over because of an underwhelming result ! I will make an analysis as well soon..
Great review. May I add yesterday’s biggest achievement: Eldar smiling for three hours in a row. Impressive.
haha… yeah.. man, that was fake …
Sorry to say but it’s too late, the Uk already accused the voting to be nothing but political and a show a horrid mess… typical and lame: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2012/may/27/belligerent-eurovision-broken-europe
Typical arrogant leftist ESC bashing (I am allowed to say this being a lefty myself). Ridiculous that people still buy it but it’s is the UK with all its splendid isolation and we vs the continent stuff (having taught English culture at university, I am allowed to say that too, I guess). If the UK wants us to like them, they should offer us sth we can like. And don’t forget that they came 5th with a cheesy cr*p (sorry!) in 2009. Little Jade beating Patricia Kaas? The UK has done much better than they deserved lately imho.
UK had a bad draw and jurors didnt help so thats the reason I guess it ended low on the scoreboard
With the exception of Jade (who I loved – both her and her mesmerising ballad) I agree with pretty much else..They should not complain. I read a spot on comment (among the ones full of ignorance) saying that you can’t virtually mock at every single participating country throughout the contest and then ask the same countries you mocked to vote in all seriousness for you. Some respect would not hurt I guess…
It is totally ridiculous and a bad piece of journalism too:
“Montenegro and Serbia high-twelving each other …” When exactly did Serbia have a chance to give 12 pts to Montenegro this year. The authour probably thinks that Bosnia and Herzegovina exchanged 12 points too …
Yes, we know. The UK is the only working country in Europe. The continent has always been a mess meaning trouble, hasn’t it? LOL
I disliked Estonia and i don’t think they got a deserved 6th place.B&H was way better in the ballad field IMO.Ott ruined the song his his shouty vocals.
As for the review, it’s good but I disagree on many things. I’ll make mine later, next week or so, but I want things to cool down when do. Still, thank you so much to share such personal thoughts openly on a blog and you wont hear a single bad thing about your opinions which I strongly respect. You made it possible for this blog to exist, for nice people and a small community to exist and also to give TRUE personal editorials, and not just promo ads like other sites. Thank you again, you’re one of my highlights this year again!
merci!
Very good review and I agree with many things too. Still working on my review. I have only finished Albania and Estonia so far …
Nice to read your review ET although I dont agree on all of them, well who will
so true about Denmark, cause I cant find other reason. Her singing was well.. on Norway it was a catchy song and didnt deserved the last place.. I still believe that Swedish victory was the expense of the other scandinavian countries
ohhh its me Roselildk.. I dont why it didnt save my login
At the lowlights i would add all the Balkan and Ex Soviet exchange as well.Kaliopi got all of her voted from the neighbouring Balkan countries f.i.
I certainly agree about Serbia, I want to see Zeljko again in esc with another one of his great songs, and maybe the third time will be lucky for him!
. The same thing applies for Jonsi – I’m really sad for Iceland.
Ok I have made my final ranking after the final..The main change is Estonia who has gone up quite a few places :

Detailed analysis on the way..!
The Jedwardmania will never be over, face it. Have you heard the rumours about miscounted cotes from Germany? i guess not. Even though Imight be partial about Jedward, they were not uninspiring, my dad liked them, and he doesn’t even like their songs usually. And my uncle who didn’t like them at all, also liked their performance. They sang well, not the best, but they were certainly not the worst!
Good review although like most others I am inclined to agree with some parts and not others but then that’s kind of what it’s been like on this site for the past few months, and very pleasant it has been too. Thank you for all your hard work it’s been really enjoyable. It will probably take me an age to go through the contest with a fine tooth comb but I’m sure I’ll get around to it some time when I get a chance (have a festival next weekend I’m co-organiser of so am going to be up to my eyes)
Great to see so many countries announcing participation for 2013 already. Am sure Sweden will be putting on another great show.
I got seven out of the top-10 right this year. The three I did not predict would be in were the ballads of Estonia, Albania and the (as usual) suspicious top-10 placing of Azerbaijan. Funny nobody mentions the blatant vote exchange between Azerbaijan and Malta. Even more suspiciously Malta was a country nobody thought would pass the semi and yet it did…
Instead of them I thought three upbeat entries would be in the top-10: Greece, Romania and the horror of Ukraine. My theory is that “Euphoria” swept up all the eurodance/pop friendly votes, while in the ballads department votes were scattered (my prediction was that they would all go to Serbia and Spain).
It is sad that this site continues to engage with such gusto in bashing of the (very enjoyable) greek entry. Funny that all those months you didn’t do the same with Gaitana, even though it was clearly rubbish and Ukraine also features (sometimes very undeservedly) in the top-10 year after year. Nor do I remember you cheering the very different entry that Greece chose last year. Oh well…
Gaitana can sing whereas Eleftheria can’t and shows her undies instead.
I had Greece in my top 3 last year.
“This danceing (sic) pretty lady stuff is over”
Greece sent guys the three previous years, remember?
Do you really call Sakis a guy? I’d rather call him a ken doll. LOL
Since we NEED to have some bitchiness, I also wouldn’t call Rona Nishliu a “singer”, but rather an escapee from a lunatics institution.
“Bellowing like a hippo trapped in a well” as the Guardian put it would also do very nicely.
On a more-serious note, the editorial was saying that Greece had maintained its high placements in the final by sending music that wasn’t just a pretty lady dancing. This is further exemplified by the fact that the last “dancing pretty lady thing” to make the top 10 was Turkey 2009. It can be argued that Lena in 2010 was one of these two, but Lena offered more than Hadise, Eleftheriou, or Ivi Adamou did in their performances, so I’m inclined to put Lena in a different category.
You look like a kindred soul, ct. I too find the Greek entry enjoyable (not a “great” song, but very catchy, and one I will still be listening to years from now, unlike most of the other songs from this year).
I wasn’t brave enough to leave Ukraine out of my predicted top ten, falling for the hype (there were SO many better songs at the national final – I don’t know what the jury saw in this one). After seeing Romania (my favorite this year) in rehearsals, I dropped it to eleventh. It just didn’t look good. I think they should have used much less of the stage (like Sweden) and kept the camera focused on that section, instead of showing so many camera shots of everyone spread out from far away.
Good analysis. But I very much like Russian song – I think grannies were very natural, not trying to please the audience. And the song was good too – “Come on and dance!” That’s all you need, right? Simplicity does it for me but I guess, different people – different preferences.
On the other hand, it’s good that Russia didn’t win – I know they don’t want to host again, especially now, when they are about to host the Winter Olympics. And the country is not very stable politically and economically.
Sweden will produce a great show, I’m sure.
First, a quick review. Despite continuing to underestimate Albania and Estonia (I still don’t see the appeal of those), and Sweden (if I had looked at the download charts, I certainly would have recognized it as the winner before the show), I still got eight of the top ten correct (putting perennials Greece and Ukraine in place of the aforementioned songs). I really wasn’t confident that Germany, Italy, and Spain would all make the top ten, but that is what I predicted, and they finished eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively. I was pretty good at the bottom of the table, too. Of the bottom six, I had four of them in my bottom six, and the other two (Malta and Denmark), I had at nineteenth and twentieth.
Overall though, the year was a huge disappointment to me. There were many good songs (it seemed like far more than usual) left in the national finals, and the songs selected just didn’t appeal to me that much. I keep favorites by country since the start of what I call the “modern” Eurovision era (starting in 2004 – as the complex stagings were becoming more common, about the time I began following the contest, and exactly the year of the first semifinal – when every country that wanted to enter could enter).
This year (looking at countries that have entered at least three times over that period) produced only one of my favorite songs by country over the period of 2004 to 2012 (Iceland, though Serbia and Slovenia were close), and a whopping EIGHT of my LEAST favorite songs by country over that time, including Georgia, Montenegro, Russia, San Marino, Ukraine, and United Kingdom (yes, I liked Scooch and Josh more).
My complete list (sorted by year):
2012 Iceland
2011 Azerbaijan
2011 Denmark
2011 Netherlands
2011 Russia
2011 San Marino
2011 Slovenia
2010 Belgium
2010 France
2010 Georgia
2010 Germany
2010 Turkey
2009 Estonia
2009 Malta
2009 Portugal
2009 Switzerland
2009 United Kingdom
2008 Armenia
2008 Greece
2008 Montenegro
2008 Norway
2008 Poland
2008 Spain
2007 Belarus
2007 Cyprus
2007 Ireland
2007 Serbia
2006 Bosnia and Herzegovina
2006 Bulgaria
2006 Finland
2006 Lithuania
2006 Macedonia
2006 Romania
2005 Croatia
2005 Hungary
2005 Israel
2005 Moldova
2004 Albania
2004 Andorra
2004 Austria
2004 Latvia
2004 Sweden
2004 Ukraine
Others will no doubt look more kindly on this year, but for me it is easily the worst since the horrible 2005 contest.
I will try not to gripe TOO much, and start looking forward to next year (though with Bjorkman’s hands all over it, I am already pessimistic about it
).
I’ve just read your review, ET. I agree with just about everything except one or two things. I do not find B&H boring, but I can accept that others do; Tooji is a lousy singer and people realised that. However, Eleftheria and Jedward were even worse and Ivi was at the same level. I also think that Turkey did not deserve a top 10 placing; Moldova deserved it more.
The season is over. Thanks for everything, ET.
P.S.: my one wish for next year – EBU, do not let Mr. Björkman’s glossy, glittering and prerecorded approach take over ESC.
Very nice review, i liked it.
Here’s my top 26 for the final and my thoughts on each song :
1. Sweden – had the best song imo, a flawless performance and an original coreography – deserved winner. Not much else to say.
2. Serbia – the song was very good, i hope too that he comes back. Deserved result, should have been 2nd, but still 3rd is very good.
3. Spain – this song has grown a lot on me after i saw her performances in the rehearsals and in the final. I’m glad it ended in top 10 at least, but deserved top 5. Pastora was the best voice this year, imo.
4. Iceland – great song, good performance, very underrated in the final. It deserved to be in top 10 imo. I guess the bad draw (performing so soon in the night and after Russia) distroyed their chances of a good placing.
5. Norway – this song was my favourite before the semifinals, but the live performance disappointed me and fell to 5th place in my ranking. In the final Tooji’s peformance wasn’t so bad (was better than in the semi imo), but the backing vocals were weak (i almost couldn’t hear “na-na na-na na-na”) and also there were many better so i would have understood if it wouldn’t get a top 10, but being last with 7 pts, it’s just so undeserved. -_-’ Despite the performance the song was great, very enjoyable with some oriental sounds and a great show and coreography, i just don’t understand the results (shocking, should have been in top 15 imo).
6. Hungary – very good song, the performance wasn’t among the best, but was good, so very underrated, undeserved result, but i expected it. They had a bad draw and who votes for Hungary usually, anyway ? They were only voted by 5 countries and their highest pts were from neighbours Slovakia (8p) and Romania (7p – there are many hungarians in Romania).
7. Denmark – very good song, very good performance, 23rd place ? ..so underrated and undeserved. I never expected it to be so low.
8. Germany – great pop song in brittish style, very good performance, 8th place was totally deserved for them. For me it was so much better than both songs from Lena.
9. Estonia – one of the best ballads this year, the performance was amazing (Ott was the best male voice this year). 6th place for them was deserved, maybe just 1 or 2 places too high, but deserved anyway. Btw, did anyone notice that at the half of voting Estonia was only 19th ?
but then, in the second half it started to get a lot of 6 to 12 pts, thank god.
10. Azerbaijan – good ballad, very good performance (what a great voice i must say
). 4th place was a bit too much, but predictable. Anyway it was good enough to been in top 10.
11. Italy – good song, good performance (she was very sure of herself on the stage, i liked that), deserved result, although i expected it to end in top 5, as Italy was one of the contenders for the win.
12. Romania – very enjoyable song, great show, pretty good performance, 12th place was deserved.
13. Greece – very catchy song, i liked it although it was a typical song for Greece, in the same style as Paparizou’s song in 2005 (so what ? i don’t care too much about that, i don’t mind if a song is in the same style as another song that was successful or not ..and i feel the same way about Slovenia’s song wich was in Moltiva’s style or the Portuguese song which was in “Senhora do mar”‘s style .. if you like a song, it shouldn’t matter that it’s in a style of an older song or something like taht, you should enjoy it just as much, or should there be only original songs ? i don’t think so). About Eleftheria, she doesn’t have a good voice, but i liked her performance in the final, she sang quite correct imo and their show was good as well, so i thought it would be another top 10 for Greece, but surprisingly that didn’t happen and they ended on 17th place, which is a bit too low than they deserved (a top 15 around 12-15th place would have been more fair imo).
14. Albania – the song was let’s say not my cup of tea, but i really enjoyed and appreciated her performance which was amazing and touching. I liked the instrumental part a lot. 5h place was too much for Albania imo, but she probably got many pts from the jury, top 3 at juries maybe. A place between 10-15 would have been more deserving imo.
15. Turkey – I didn’t like this song too much at first, but it grew on me in the last 2 weeks and i really enjoyed it in the final. The performance was pretty good, nice coreography and i had goosebumps when he shouted “Haijdeee”
7th place was a bit too much for Turkey, but it was expected to end in top 10. Anyway, there were many better songs and a place around 15 would have been more deserving for Turkey.
16. Bosnia & Herzegovina – good ballad, just a bit boring and a very good performance. I didn’t mind the dress, she looked quite elegant to me. 18th place was not too far from the truth, deserved result.
17. Cyprus – I liked the song although it was a bit silly but it was enjoyable and had a good show imo. On the other hand i didn’t like her performance, she was weak vocally, so 16th place was deserved for Cyprus.
18. Moldova – I didn’t like the song at first and he sang very bad in Moldova’s NF, but he improved a lot and had a very good performance in the final and also the song grew a bit on me and i enjoyed it in the final. I liked the show as well. 11th place was too high for Moldova, but singing last helped them a lot, i guess.
19. France – the song was not bad, but not very good also, an average song imo. I was disappointed by her performance which was quite weak imo (i expected a lot more from Anggun) and 22nd place was quite deserved.
20. FYR Macedonia – had one of the few songs that i didn’t like very much from the final. Kaliopi had a very good performance and she definitely has a great voice, but i don’t like how it sounds, it’s just not my taste. 13th place was too high for FYR Macedonia imo, undeserved result.
21. Ukraine – I liked her voice a lot, sounded a bit like Anastacia’s voice, maybe even better and she had a great performance, but the song wasn’t too good imo. 15th place a bit too much for Ukraine this year, but not too far from the truth.
22. Malta – I liked their show a lot and the performance wasn’t too bad, but there just were many better songs and i think 21st place was deserved for Malta.
23. Ireland – I liked their song better than last year and i think they improved a bit vocally, but still was one of the worst performances from the final and 19th place was deserved for them.
24. Lithuania – Donny had a great performance and he was very energic on stage which made the song sound better than it actualy is. Still 14th place was too much for Lithuania, undeserved result.
25. UK – Although the performance was good, the song was dated and boring, so it got what it deserved imo. I feel a bit sorry for Engelbert though.
26. Russia – It was one of the favourites to win, so being 2nd wasn’t a big surprise for anyone, but for me it was clearly the worst song from the final and the performance was also bad, so this was the most undeserved result of the night together with Norway’s last place.
About the final i must say that it was one of the best finals in ESC in the last 10 years (maybe even the best one), most of the songs being good or very good and also many singers had very good performances and a great show on stage. There were also so many great voices this year. I really enjoyed a lot the final this year.
I liked also the interval act from Emin and the preview of it with those drums and oriental sounds anticipating it. Also the stage looked amazing imo, i wished i could have been there, hehe. And i liked that the Crystal Hall was coloured in each countries flag on the exterior, before each country’s song.
My highlights were :
Sweden’s, Spain’s and Serbia’s performances.
Romania’s performance as well, cause it was my country and i enjoyed it.
The fireworks at the beginning.
The best song winning, first time since 2007 when Molitva won.
So many great voices participating.
The amazing stage.
Mr. Lordi announcing the finish votes.
The interval act, i really enjoyed it.
You should’ve put in your highlights how Malta performed 21st and landed 21st place as well ;-P
And what’s wrong with Lithuania? It was great! A slow-ballad song that transformed into a dance-pop song. I thought it deserved its placing. It was like Macedonia’s song that started classy then turned rebellious rock.
