Unser Star Für Baku: Is Roman the Next Lena?

Posted: January 12, 2012 by eurovisiontimes in Germany

Germany - The first heat of “Unser Star für Baku”, the German preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, has just ended. Five young artists qualified for the next round. The real star of the first show was the “Livetabelle” though, that shows the current results of the voting. The Top 6 were all within a few percentage points and thus the final result was not predictable. The public in the studio cheered when their artist moved up a place and the selection thus has the atmosphere of a sports event.

It seems like once more Stefan Raab had the right idea. It worked so well (probably also concerning televoting income for Pro7) , because many of the singers are on a similar level. However, the favourite seems to be Roman who performed in 10th position and thus in exactly the same position as Lena 2 years ago. Roman performed a Jason Mraz style song and got standing ovations from both Thomas D and Stefan Raab as well as the public. In the voting he came only second though.

The winner of the first heat is Shelly, who performed  her own hip-hop influence version of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie.

You can watch all performances on the official website of the show!

Here is the full result:

Qualified:
01. Shelly Phillips (15,5%)
02. Roman Lob (14,9%)
03. Céline Huber (14,7%)
04. Leonie Burgmer  (14,7%)
05. Katja Petri(14,6%)
Out:
06. Kai Nötting  (14,5%)
07. Jil Rock (5,9%)
08. Yasmin Gueroui  (2,4%)
09. Salih Özcan (1,6%)
10. Jan Verweij (1%)

I watched the show but did not vote because I do not approve of the voting format. I absolutely loved Katja and Shelly and think that the other 3 deserved to get to the next round too. Thus, fair results imo.
To answer ET’s question: I hope not! Roman was only my number 5 tonight and I do not approve of the language he sometimes uses!

I had problems with the webcast so I’m watching the performances now.
My favorites are Shelly, Katja and Roman.

  3. Do you think any of them are ESC material?

    • paschalisb says:

Well, they all lack experience, but so did Lena at first. I tend to prefer male singers (there are always more female performers in ESC anyway) so I would prefer Roman.

  4. L says:

I hardly think he is the next Lena when 6 people got approximately the same amount of votes. I think the results were fair. My favs were Shelly and Roman, but none had me excited. I miss Jennifer Braun. :( Hopefully next show has better candidates.

I liked the live table, it got quite exciting for the last few minutes! I personally quite liked Kai and shouted a lot as he dropped out of the top 5 with only 90 seconds to go! I don’t really want loads more women who sound like Lena-wannabes.

Will be interesting to see what happens when it comes to them getting a suitable original song though. It’s all a bit too soon to tell yet, isn’t it?

  6. I hope Roman will be Roman and not a Lena. Only Lena can be Lena! I mostly wait for the songs, I don’t like NF when you select singers separately

  7. Marko says:

I also decided I will wait for the songs for ESC..but if somebody black appear please inform me on time!!! :D

  8. Luke Bratton says:

ha! i actualy feared germany would get Lena to represent them for the third year in a row!!

  9. mary says:

one could see that stefan raab is still the godfahter of esc at the moment. it seemed to me that thomas d. is just a jury-member, and stefan is still the president – his appearance and presence has the most weight.

  10. Personally I don’t get the hype over Roman tbh; but maybe I’m not being fair to him :)
My fav would be Katja I guess.

  11. M-Fireball says:

I wonder who will represent Slovakia in Baku! Hmmm…i want smth as good as TWIINS!!

  12. Shevek says:

I am not going to follow this NF, because I do not like its format. Good luck to all participants nonetheless.
