Norway: The Canoes and Hanne Sørvaag Collaborate

Posted: November 19, 2011 by eurovisiontimes in Norway

Norway – The Norwegian national broadcaster NRK continues to publish the participants of the Norwegian national final “Melodi Grand Prix” little by little. The next participants revealed are the Norwegian-American band “The Canoes”. The band was founded after the 4 members had met during a canoe trip (hence the name).

Their song will be composed by Hanne Sørvaag, who competed in last year’s Melodi Grand Prix with the song “You’re Like a Melody” as a singer and with the song “Guns&Boys” as co-author.  She has also composed the Eurovision entries of Germany in 2008 “Disappear” of Georgia in 2010 “Shine” and of Norway in 2010 “My Heart is Yours“.

Unfortunately no videos of The Canoe can be found on YouTube, yet.

Ms. Sørvaag’s compositions usually look like fake crystal. They may sound good for a split second, but they quickly lose all of their misleading charm. I am still not impressed by the Norwegian line-up so far.

    • I love Shine now… I didn’t in 2010… but I think that has more to do with Sophia’s vocal skills than the composition of the song….

    • Marko says:

But you loved Norway in 2008, and who was composer? Exactly Hanne Sorvaag! :D

      • Marko says:

        This comment was for Shevek!

        • Shevek says:

I did say ‘usually’ and besides Maria was singing that one and I would love to listen to her singing the itens on her shopping list. LOL

          • Marko says:

            Hehehhe yeah I know it!!

OMG it was -1 degree whole day here! Not above 0 today! :D

            • togravus says:

We had 15 degrees more here in the cold North today. Hehehe …

              • Marko says:

But you didn’t have this “AMAZING” fog we had during WHOLE day! Ha ha!! :D :D :D

                • togravus says:

I have to confess now. I love ‘Zbudi se’ so much that I simply ignored to one bum note and gave it a 12/12 nevertheless. Somehow I have to muster the strength to downgrade Slovenia 1997 to 10/12 tomorrow. After all, I was very strict with other songs I love which only got a 10/12 because of vocal flaws (YU 76 and Sweden 96 etc.).
And I simply cannot find my winner for 1996. I have been watching the two P-country performances for hours but it is still a tie. OMG, I AM a nutcase, ain’t I …

                  • Marko says:

Maybe you will like now Roger Pontare from 2000, you see some surprises happen when you listen to the songs this time.. :D It smells that you will like ” When Spirits Are Calling My Name” :D

                    • togravus says:

I certainly won’t because I simply do not like his voice … In my last review 5 years ago he got a 2/12 …
Btw, I think that I feel somehow protective towards Slovenia 1997 because that song is so fragile. I felt the same about sweet Filipa Azevedo in 2010 until Shevek told me that small ladies from the North of Portugal are tough as nails. Is Tanja tough as a nail too?

  2. Marko says:

For me it’s such a promising composer!!! :) I love her…I would like if she participates as singer as well, like last year! “You’er like a melody” is fantastic…and performance was magical! I’m so glad I saw Hanne Sorvaag in Belgrade, in 2008..she’s magnificent.. :)

  3. Marko says:

    @ Toggie

I think that Tanja Ribich is the same age as you! :)
She is actually more known as actress in Slovenia than singer If I’m not wrong! :)

    • togravus says:

She is 9 month younger which is just perfect for a male-female couple. LOL And her birthday is the same as my granny’s. :)

    • togravus says:

And I forgot. Our German commentator told us as part of the introduction to Slovenia 1997 that Tanja was an actress. Before the song started, he said: “And know we will learn if she is a singer too”. After she had finished, he said sth like: “Yes, she definitely is a fine singer too.” :)

  4. L says:

Did you use a translator off NRK’s article to find this information? I hope she is not the composer and that they only used that picture of Arne Hovda with her because they didn’t have others of him. I’m clinging on to the last bit of hope, LOL!

    Hi Marko!

    • togravus says:

Is that you, Laila? If yes, we have been waiting for you for quite some time. LOL

    • Marko says:

Laila!!!!!! That’s You! :) I missed you, i was reading you all the time, but couldn’t write anything to you! :(

      I can’t believe you dislike Kaliopi!! :O

I thought you will be very glad for her, she is really appreciated singer in whole Ex Yugolsavia and ppl really respect her and consider her as top quality! :)

      • L says:

I missed your enthusiasm on ESCToday too, lol. ;)

I don’t know about Kaliopi… she seems so middle-of-the-road to me, like her song don’t quite reach all the way up on my barometer. :) Mostly it’s because of her voice. That said, I haven’t heard ALL her songs so I can hope she surprise me. There’s always a chance for that, even G:Son songs :P

  5. L says:

It’s me. I have only read stuff here a few times before. I didn’t think I should “join” another ESC related site since it would only be the same (unpopular) things said anyway. :P

    • Marko says:

Nooo, there are many who agree with you on some/all things! :D

And even if there aren’t, so what..it’s even better! :D

You worry about too many internal selections, but we have chosen your favorite Zeljko Joksimovic! :D

      • togravus says:

Well, no matter whether one agrees with you or not, you are probably only one of around 20 ESC fans out there whose opinion is always well-founded and therefore respected, at least by me. I only wish that you wouldn’t equate gay with sequins, feathers and tacky stuff all the time … LOL

        • L says:

Thanks! I might have said things like it, but it is the clichéd generalizations that I mean and those are the ones I don’t like myself. My uncle isn’t like that so I know!

      • L says:

Serbia has only sent good songs (until caroban), and now again there’s a very good chance! :D

Don’t you miss EMA too? And maybe Dora? That’s why I dislike TOO many internal selections. I like the NF’s with more Balkan songs! :)
