Norway – Today it has been confirmed that Kim André Rysstad will participate in the Norwegian national final, MGP.  Kim André Rysstad is a widely known folk musician and is very popular in his home country. Today he confirmed his participation in Melodi Grand Prix 2012 saying to NRK “my song is a kind of show, and hymn inspired. It is beautiful, reverent and quiet, with a lyrical Norwegian text. With so many songs competing, it is important to stand out, and that’s exactly what this song does. It has a distinctive character, and is genuine in its expression”.

The previous couples of weeks have seen various Norwegian acts confirm their particpation in MGP, this years Norwegian national final will be taken place 11 February 2012 in Oslo after various semi finals which will be hosted in various places of the Scandinavian country.

Here is a video of Rysstad performing in 2009:

Would he make a good choice for Norway?

  1. Love this style of music…. Unfortunately, he won’t stand a chance in MGP, tough!!

I will just cope / paste my comment from the other site …

Very nice if you are lying in the grass on a sunny summer day or attend a live concert because of musical subtleties … but totally wrong in a contest most people think of as a party or family show. Talented guy though. :)

    • You are probably right.. but discoveries like these make the listening to crappy songs each year less horrible ….

That is true. Most ESC related songs that are very close to my heart and top in my playlist never make it onto the ESC stage anyway … And that’s the fun of following the national finals, you get to know singers you would never heard of otherwise. I decided to skip the internet selections though. It has just become too much … 200 songs here, 70 songs there …

    • I didnt like it at first but now whatever the song is, i love it – hope his MGP song is just as great!!! ;-]

  4. Amazing choice. Just like Helene last yer, there really IS diversity in the Norwegian MGP (usually more so than in MF, though MF 2012 seems to be quite interesting) and it’s an incredible entry coming our way. Wonder how he’ll perform live, and how he’ll push it in 3 minutes. He’s quite popular and if his song is very different, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did really well, even better than what you guys seem to think

Plus I disagree that this doesn’t fit Eurovision. It’s the whole point, it’s a music contest open to anything and the more different types of entries will be heard and moreover will do well, the better the quality will be, even for the pop entries

This is the good esc news of the day

In general I agree with you of course but when exactly was the last time a sophisticated song with Western or Northern European ethnic touches did well in ESC? 1996? LOL In particular televoting sends songs like that straight to the bottom of the list. :(

      • Everything depends what you mean by “did well” and “sophisticated”… Norway folk not doing well? There’s a Rybak to prove you wrong. You’d say, that’s not sophisticated but then that’s your opinion, we don’t know how Kom André Rysstad’s entry will sound. Entertaining and catchy can be sophisticated too.

And to be fair, I’d say 2003 not 1996 lol

I never said that catchy can not be sophisticated (manGa’s ESC song was extremely catchy and sophisticated at the same time imo) … but ‘Fairytale’ had just some ethnic elements (instruments above all). If you have a closer look at the compostion, you will see that its basic structure is that of a pop song. Those ‘disguised’ entries always do well in ESC and I have no idea why. In 2006 a schlager disguised as hardrock won. LOL
Well, we will see. Yes, I forgot ‘Sanomi’ … I always do because that song has never done it for me. It is a good one nevertheless, just leaves me utterly cold.

I was wrong … because we will never see or know … I am 100 % sure before having heard any song that Norway won’t send this guy. Wanna bet? They learnt their lesson in 2006. :(

          • Yeah I always said “Fairytale” was a schlager very well hidden by a cute face but anyway, you can still have catchy and sophisticated (agreed on Manga) and we can’t know before hand about Kim’s song, but I’ll take the bet lol

Though, not only we don’t know Kim’s song but also we don’t know the competitors against him that can make quite a difference too

I know about “Sanomi” which I don’t get coz it’s my evident esc winner for 2003
